Best of 2014

In a year of great change in my private life with much less game time than ever before it was perhaps unavoidable there'd be fewer standouts for me. These are the games that left their mark on me in 2014.

List items

  • Lacking the predecessor's cohesiveness and majesty but still a fantastic game.

  • Oh, the insanity! What an inspired mechanic Capy came up with with the overlapping lives. and that soundtrack!

  • Give me more of the Nemesis system and less of the ultraviolence in a more original setting and I'll be a happy man.

  • What a well made disappointmentnof a game. At its core this is still a great Bungie shooter with beautiful art direction. Too bad its systems hem you in, its worlds feel small and its story is nonsensical. Here's hoping Bungie pull off an Assassin's Creed 2 with the sequel and realise the potential for something special.

  • for its sophomore effort Supergiant came up with a world More beautiful and memorable than that of Bastion. The battle mechanics were also thoroughly engaging. Here's to many more worlds from Supergiant!

  • the year's biggest surprise. Basically a text adventure based on a fanciful retelling of a Jules Verne novel? Though of course that really is the perfect formula for a thrilling adventure spanning the globe.

  • 2014's 2013 Game of the Year. A fantastic adventure that's more forward thinking than its heritage might suggest.
