Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game - The Demo

TO BE CLEAR: The game SPVTW:TG is related to the movie in the sense that it's coming out at the same time.  No Michael Cera Voice over and no shoehorned advertisement.

Side scrolling beat'em up that is instantly charming to gamers of the coin slot arcades and the double dragon home consoles will instantly feel a connection to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. Something that will resonate with everyone is the challenge of fighting and figuring out how to spend the spare change.

 Don't say it Scott.
 Don't say it Scott.
Scott may be the titular protaganist of the Bryan O'Malley books and movie, but in this beat'em up, four characters share in the adventure. Scott is quick and damages enemies with iconic shoryukens and whirlwind kicks. also on the nimble side is Ramona who may brings out a very big hammer on stronger attacks. Both Kim and Stephen may not hurry to the show as quicly as the others but they sure do bring the pain with stronger attacks.

During my trial playthrough, I was instantly absorbed as I selected my character and was greeted with an overworld and starwipe that reminded me of my super nintedo. With a quick check of my button map, I was impressed to see an assist by Knives. All characters summon her, but each one is different: Ramona gets a big cup of java, Stephen gets a ninja Knives, Scott gets a big LOVE cloud, and Ramona gets a kiss. This temporarily boost power for each character and in can, when executed, unleash a barrage of punches on enemies. I got as high as 150 combo.

With awesome attacks, its only fitting that the enemies are really hard. They charge, pick up objects and throw them for some long distance cowardice, and bigger enemies take a while to wear them down. Not to say it wasn't fun encountering them however. They show emoticons when they lay on the ground hurt >_<. On occasions they dog pile on top of the character and they pick snowball fights in the first stage. The funniest part is when enemies drop change, which actually comes in handy for purchasing items in stores.

 Where's the giant baby?

One thing that is just fanservice comes from the art and level details. Props go out to Paul Robertson for making the world of Scott Pilgrim come to life and merging it with the beat'em up it takes after. The biggest homages (in the first level anyways) are directed to Mario. The level select reminded me of Super Mario World. There were secret entrances in the level which were like the pipes you went down in mario to get extra loot and advance in the level. There were certain bricks in Ramona's subspace you can break and punch repeatedly that produced a bunch of coins.

 Saving up for tacos.

Scrounging up all that pocket change comes in handy when entering the stores in the game. The selection in some stores are amazing like green tea or Burritos. It's pretty cool to see that saving up money can actually be used to pay Scott's late fee's at a movie rental store. With the money accumulating, theres probably some worthwhile things to buy in the full game. The only downside so far have been the offline only multiplayer. Since going through alone, it would really help to get the Sex Bob-omb gang all beating up enemies.

Rocksteady just pulled a Ozymandias!

NOBODY has knocked Batman: Arkham Asylum for any of it's accomplishments. Maybe, the only complaint can be that the detective vision was used more than it should have been. Causing players to go through the game in x-ray mode where everything is see though and trippy colors. That minor gripe is a speck on the ever impressive B:AA.
Now, before the sequel comes out and details trickling in, breakthrough news comes in...from the original game. GameInformer reveals a secret in Batman: Arkham Asylum that foretold the coming of Jesus...sorry, Batman: Arkham City. A game based around secrets and finding them out, and no one thought to mess around in Warden Sharp's office? Just goes to prove how satisfactory Batman: Arkham Asylum is. Rocksteady and Batman are the Watchmen and Ozymandias of the game world.

I thought it would be Shaun and Ed.

Over at Kotaku, the news is that Greatest-game-ever Scott Pilgrim vs. The World would have friends over, "Edgar Wright calls in some friends from Shaun of the Dead." Since this game is created independently from the movie, even having its own ending, director Edgar wright has no input on the game. Unfortunately, that means no Winchester bar locations and Ed Zombies.
The good news that among all the nod's and winks to gaming history, the game is adding a cheat code! Right from the title screen, every player will have access to fight the undead. This is within the game, but unlocks only with rhythmic button presses of the bygone days of cheating. Hopefully, there will be a sound to know you unlocked it.

Aside from the loading.

Went back to Playstation Home after what seems to be a year and not much has changed. Home is still in Beta, but they have updated a lot. XMB for traveling, more spaces, and more to buy. Of course I have not bought a thing since I first started, but one thing I do enjoy that's still improving are the participate and receive diversions. I'll be Home more often if they incorporate the Trophy Room  space, but getting something is still great. Especially if it's free. A great guide to all free stuff is Alphazone4. So if you decide to go back , don't spend a dime.

Hot Pixie Ass!

 You're selling what?
 You're selling what?
This ad has been emblazoned on a few gaming websites and I believe Youtube, but believe it or not I did not know what the product was. First I thought that this was random Twilight-esque marketing for a new fantasy book, but I was distracted by that ass. Then I started crediting this art to artist Hyung Tae-kim, which seems similar and he's done work for games such as Magna Carta II. Only until I clicked the link I was brought to a MMO which falls under the Gpotato familiy. The Gpotato website has various MMO's under their belt including: Luna, Rappelz, Aika, and Flyff. I have to salute Gpotato for not only their varied selection of MMO's, but interesting art styles. I have not played any of these MMO's yet, but the artwork alone has got me intrigued!
Seriously, she's dressed to fight!

Limbo and his Blob?

While I had been reading the theories at another website and the protagonist is actually evil or the main character is actually going through boy to adulthood. Here's my theory: a boy died and is going through two afterlife possibilities.

Netflix upgrade

Even though I swear I've had the feature to search  for months now, some really big news is that the Netflix disc for the PS3 will become obsolete by October. Just when I had gotten used to putting my Netflix disc into it's own case.

Give me a disaster!

Just a lingering memory of Hydrophobia, reminded me that the game seemed remarkable. That sparked more memories and finally I settled down on a fact: I had not played a good disaster game. From the trailer of Hydrophobia, I noticed that environment dangers don't really contribute to the games I play, and I will not be content to settle down with environmental kills. I'll be expecting to see more games of this genre and hope that I get to have a character have to run away from a Tsunami like in the Day the Earth Stood Still.
It's in the title, which Hydrophobia embraces so literally, where a woman is afraid of water and is amazingly forced to deal with gallons of the stuff.

Deepest, Bluest, my hat is like a sharks fin.
Deepest, Bluest, my hat is like a sharks fin.
Not quite sure of the plot, but it's a game where you have to wade through corridors of water like LL cool J in Deep Blue Sea and swim through metal corridors like in Alien: Resurrection. Sorry for the references, but those movies come to mind when thinking about corridors filled with water. Hopefully there's a shark!
Hand in hand with a game I had forgotten about and still hasn't come out is I Am Alive. Seeing the most impressive natural disaster and survival trailer, no other news had come out for the title. With the speculation of what could've happened to cause the disaster, what was really interesting was the main character, Adam, surviving what seems to be a pack of hunters who are out of to get his water bottle. Motivating premise and remarkable visuals give the appeal that this title would deal with adventure and suspense. Maybe even a scenario where Adam would Parkour his way through crumbling buildings.
One other game, since it sprang from my overuse of the word disaster, Disaster Report. Not really considering this a good game, because it's on the PS2 and it seemed like a stiffly animated, loading nightmare, I overlooked the intensity aspect. Going through Youtube videos, I noticed that it really deals with a lot of scenarios I would be scared of: Gushing waters, losing balance because of a tremor, buildings falling apart. It all looks pretty scary and game characters are actually just trying to survive. I hope to get my hands on this to see if this has any good scares in it.
Hoping to see some cool, 70's disaster games like Poseidon's Adventure and Towering Inferno!
