Hi all! I'm a lady who's been gaming for more than three decades, starting back when the Atari 2600 was still the hottest thing in people's living rooms. I began with watching my dad play Q-Bert when I was a tot, then got my very first game: Strawberry Shortcake. It was totally lame, but I was like... two or three years old and it played funny music, so I enjoyed it.
The first console I owned that wasn't considered the "family's" was a Sega Genesis, upon which I mastered Scorpion's spear attack in the original Mortal Kombat and played Sonic the Hedgehog 2 every day after school... though I never did beat Metal Sonic, in the end.
I skipped the next few generations of console gaming, opting mostly for point-and-click adventures and other games on PC. I did own a GameBoy, but only had three or four games for it, two of which were Tetris and Tetris 2. It wasn't until I was 18 and had my first serious boyfriend that I really got back into gaming. He was a gamer, and he'd just gotten a PS2 while his college roommate got a GameCube. Within six months, I had both consoles and a small collection of games... which has since grown exponentially out of hand.
Today, I'm still split loyalties between PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC. No Xbox, though. I never really had a need for one due to the "exclusive" games I wanted later coming to other platforms, often in a better version (Deadly Premonition Director's Cut, for example). My collection may be huge-bordering-on-hoarder-levels, but I still consider myself a casual. Say what you will, but I don't care. I'll play my games on easy difficulty so I can better enjoy the story and just have fun, because that's what gaming is all about: Having fun.
As far as genres, I still love me a good point-and-click. In the same vein, I also adore visual novels and otome games. Other genres I enjoy include survival horror (I have quite the collection of rare gems in this particular genre), fantasy RPGs, JRPGs, time management/strategy (especially games involving food), fighting games, and hack-and-slash action games. I'll try just about anything that looks interesting, though. Except shooters. I played plenty of DOOM and Quake back in the day, but I'm not the biggest fan of shooters these days.
