I really wish I liked The Outer Worlds as much as it seems other people are but I fell off it really hard. Initial impressions were great but it just became far too repetitive for me.
Ben got into it a little bit when he mentioned a lot of the open areas feel like they just have a few boxes, but I feel like they all have the same style of road/pathway as well. They mention it's cool that you are always finding yourself presented with a skill-based dialogue option, but that frequency also made them feel kind of meaningless. The combat wore thin for me before the end due to the lack of enemy or weapon variety.
To the game's credit, I did still finish it and appreciate that the quest structure does let you get on with the main story however you like. I liked some of the story beats. The conversations and dialogue throughout the game are of course great.
But in general it made me realise that the things I like about past games in this genre are the wider sandbox/exploration aspects.
Bravo for wrangling your time with this game into a succinct review. I imagine it would have been easy to write an essay.
Maybe at one point I would have bought this game day-one based on Kojima and 'seeing what the game is'. I'm no longer willing to do that at full price though. I've got plenty of other things to play this season. Maybe I'll get it in a few years for £6.50 like I did with Mass Effect Andromeda (which I got some enjoyment out of!)
