Game Of The Year 2013

These are my personal favorite games from 2013. Please note that I also played many older games from previous years that I really enjoyed (like The Walking Dead and X-Com) but I wanted this list to be a pure "Best of 2013" one. The year did not disappoint, I still have a huge backlog of games that will keep me busy well into 2014 and the ones listed here are games I've finished or spent a reasonable amount of time with. And it's absolutely in order. Number 1 actually means number 1.

I might add that I don't really buy console games new, because paying 60 bucks for a game is rarely worth it. So this list is partially sponsored by PS+. I mean, wow, 3 games on this list I got for free through that outstanding service.

  • This game blew me away. I was kind of disappointed when I first saw the trailers because I felt as if Nintendo were going to retread even more ground than usual by reusing the overworld from ALTTP. But actually playing it you quickly realize that they use this familiar setting to play around with quite a few Zelda tropes in a way the series has never seen before. Having finished it three times, it's official: This is not only my Game of The Year 2013, but also my all-time favorite Zelda. I really hope Nintendo will continue on this path with the next WiiU installment.

  • Platinum Games never disappoints. It might make games you're not personally into, but their mechanics are always rock solid. This one was just a joy to play.

  • Experimental storytelling at its finest. Big fan of the original mod, loved all the ways this fully fleshed out product still managed to surprise me.

  • Quite simply one of the best third-person action games I've ever played. And as a bonus one of the most beautiful ones as well. I already liked the last reboot, even though I hated the first five games in the franchise, but this game is the best one yet.

  • I never liked GTA (or Red Dead Redemption for that matter). I enjoyed them in concept and had fun with the first 10 hours or so, just fucking around doing random bullshit. But at some point the shooting controls and mission structure just turned playing them into a chore that I just endured for the story. This is the first one I truly enjoyed playing, thankfully it also has one of the most memorable main casts in videogames making the storylines themselves at least as good as any previous entries.

  • A truly polished experience that does everything it set out to do perfectly.

  • I'm a sucker for Metroid-style games and this one delivered. A fun, colorful world brought to life by strange characters and an outstanding soundtrack. It reminded me a lot of Outland, a sadly forgotten gem. The only thing I really disliked about it were the memes. Oh god, the memes.

  • A beautiful personal story that showed us a glimpse of the future. The highly concentrated interactivity and high-res textures in this game made it a really unique experience that was sadly over far too quick. And I don't mean the ending, by the way. More like the halfway point, when you've already figured out just about everything there is to know.

  • This is Japanese designers trying to do Western-style games and jumping on the D___ Souls bandwagon. Thankfully, they're still offering up a fresh experience unlike anything else, with the pawn system and mounting gigantic enemies. It's not even all that close to Capcom's other Dragonslaying simulator, Monster Hunter. I feel if these developers had the chance to do a Dragon's Dogma 2 (which Deep Down apparently isn't) they'd nail it.

  • I'm gonna be honest: This is only on here because I can't give the tenth spot to anything else in good conscience. The repetitive gameplay and weak Hollywood-style tearjerker moments really soured me on the game. It's still an incredible technical accomplishment with generally believable and likable (or unlikable) characters, but it's not the second coming of Christ that some people sell it as.
