War is hell - Who thinks of the children?

Dornaa - An innocent child to be the doom of the world
Dornaa - An innocent child to be the doom of the world
Children's week is hitting World of Warcraft, a time where you're suppose to show the orphans of the war around in the world.. of Warcraft. More specifically the child Dornaa, a draenei orphan that was introduced in The Burning Crusade. Apparently she freaks out the keepers of time so one can guess she'll become a wicked shaman in the future. That's not what matters though, that's left to Blizzard to fiddle with for the upcoming expansion (which I guess is where things like this will unfold).

What I need to share is the experience I had last year when Blizzard introduced the achievement system. Dumbass that I am, I naturally go for completion for the reward loot. Apparently Blizzard want the children to see war first hand so one of the achievements forces you to keep the orphan next to you while you do certain task in the PVP battlegrounds.

  • Return the flag in Warsong Gulch
  • Capture a point in Arathi Basin
  • Burn down a tower in Alterac Valley

And, the piece de resistance; capture a flag in Eye of the Storm. One flag in the middle and four points in each corner. Only way to capture the flag is to hold at least one of these four points. Something that becomes a hazzle when literally EEEVERYONE dashes to get the flag.

This is my story;
13th attempt; we've been slaughtered by the horde up until now when a guild entered the grounds. No orphans around meaning they had other priorities. Alliance were going to win when the horde captured all four points and victory was about to slip out of our hands. About to give up, I went to one of the points, empty, and began capturing it.

I spy with my healthy eye

When my eye spots an alliance paladin running towards me with the flag, me and my orphan knew it was our chance to get our task done. The paladin seemed to knew my intent so he dropped the flag right next to me and I picked it up. The thirty seconds we waited together for the point to become captured was brutal. With ten seconds left ; a rogue de-cloaks and begins to unleash everything he has on me, I was stunned so I couldn't protect myself and the paladin did what he could to keep me alive.

0.00001 second after the point changes to alliance control; I die but only after I captured the flag and completed the task. I still owe that paladin a favor for that, wish I remembered his name.

This achievement is almost as strange as the one where you got rewarded for killing players that had their orphan next to them (which was removed after too much controversy). War took their parents away from them so why not show them war first hand? *shrugs* I for one loved this week before that achievement was introduced. Felt like a way to tend to something else than just killing everything in sight.

Anyone had as much trouble as I had getting this achievement? Should one be embarrassed for putting so much time into something just to get a flying mount as a reward?  I'd also love to hear other people's stories about close encounters, especially in PVP.

There have been worse things involveing children in games, i think WoW specifically, but i can't remember them now.

Isn't that Draenei one of the characters in some Warcraft Novel? I vaguely remember something about some character in a novel being one of the children for children's week.

EotS has always been bullshit because people are stupid. :[

Good old classic times... when it was pretty much only groups in the BGs nerding their ways to rank 10-14 without dumb randoms being dumb.

That's a cool story. It's always good to have a paladin buddy in PvP. : )
As for myself I won't be going for many Children's Week achievements, they just don't interest me and I'll never have the fortitude to get all of the required holiday achievements for that flying mount. I do however enjoy the opportunity Children's Week gives me to make a lot of jokes about the holiday itself. Most involving what a bad role model my hunter is.
