It's Official. Nokia is out of their damn mind.

They have just announced the N900 thats said to be an internet focused phone that runs on a linux based OS called Maemo. The internet browser in it is based on Mozilla tech(firefox) and has Flash 9.4support(upgradable) , it has a touchscreen and a slide out qwerty keyboard and has similar look to it as the N97(that I currently own) and heres the kicker. The phone has 1GB of RAM. Fuck! I have 3GB on my PC and that little thing has 1GB!!! Hell, you could run every damn phone application ever created and it wont even slow down one bit.

I'm both pissed and excited since I bought the N97 2 months ago for 650€ and this new phone will be around 500€. The N97 and N900 are practicly identical except for the different OS and Insane ammount of RAM.
Im totally getting it though. I'm stupid that way.

Well their failures have always been with the OS running on their phones, so if this cleans that up kudos to them. I'm on Android and I love the OS, can't wait 'till they start using it on other phones. Now Android OS + Nokia Hardware...win, although it will never happen.

Yea I still have a N95 from 2 years ago I think but this seems like a good time to switch up since Nokia is finally dumping the Symbian OS which I personally think is needs a serious upgrade.

@jukezypoo:  The OS on the Nokia phones they have now is totally fine and runs well, its just that its really old, S60 is over 4years old at this point. So something new is welcome. The Nokia OS's have always been the best ones out there when it comes to its versitility(like multitasking, something the iPhone OS doesn't have) and whit a Linux based OS the things tha phone might be able to do are mindblowing.

@angelkanarias: I wouldn't call that expencive since thats whitout a contract. An iPhone 3GS here in Sweden is even more then my N97 that cost 650€. And considering that its practically a Notebook in pocket sized formate its pretty fucking cheap. Theres nothing out there that can compare to the N900 at this point. Comparing say the iPhone or the SonyEricsson X1 to that is kinda unfair on those phones since having 1GB of RAM and a powerful processor to run all that in a phone, the possibilitys are endless.

From what I've seen and heard about this phone I would totally recommend this to everyone, we just have to hope that it does everything its said to do. Nokia hasn't failed me yet so the N900 seems to be a good buy.

My problem with Nokia is their lack of subsidized contract phones with US cell phone providers.  I'd love to get one of their phones, but I don't want to pay the full price myself when I can get similarly featured phones at a fraction of the cost if I enter a contract.

It's obvious you don't know you're hardware.
First of all the Nokia N900 does NOT have 1 gig of ram, 768 of it is virtual memory so it's actual ram is 256. As any real PC user can tell you, ram and virtual memory are 2 very different things, it might work the same, but there is a massive speed difference. The question is, why did they feel that this phone needed that virtual memory, is the regular ram not enough? Should they have put in more for a completely smooth expierence?
As for CPU speed compared to the Xperia, the Xperia clocks at 528, the N900 at 600, with the Xperia's 256mb ram it really is all about the software running on it that makes a phone the victor, remember, Microsoft been at this for a long time while Maemo/Linux has relavively little expierence compared to MS, especially with WM having a lot more third party programs for it the question remains which can offer you more and faster.

The N900 looks like a great phone, but whether it's a real succes remains to be seen.

Hi. Nokia here. Sure this sounds great.
Maemo is now available on the Nokia N900. A high-performance mobile computer with a powerful processor, large internal storage, and sharp touch-screen display, but forget all that. We are now releasing our new great, highly successful product. The
Vertu Signature Diamond
No need to explain. Go Here:
 http://www.vertu.com/in-en/
Only for the low price of $88,000 and you most phones only get polyphonic ringtones too.
