While I can't really comment on the logistics behind production, I have to agree that it's getting hard to justify premium.
UPF is a slog nowadays, I wish I could articulate why in an objective and constructive way but it might come down to personal preference. For the most part, they're just so utterly disengaged with what's going on in-game and it can make for some frustrating viewing. But off-topic rants and goofy fun are what the site's all about right? I think the format's just run its course for me, it lacks focus and the gang's picks have become extremely hit-or-miss. I usually have to leave it up while doing something else to make it through the whole stretch.
The only other premium things I watch are the GBE streams and Demo Derbies, which can be infrequent. Honestly... a lot of the classic streams and best features are infrequent enough that there's not a whole lot of reason to stay subbed unless you're following an active series (or want to support the site, I'm guessing why most of us stay subbed).
As for QL's, they were never meant to be exhaustive and over time I've come to approach them as such. At this point I watch them almost purely for entertainment and maybe once in a while it might influence a purchase, but I do most of that legwork on my own. Very curious what the split is like on those site surveys. Generally speaking, I feel like GB caters to a more savvy audience which is why we've never really seen a huge push for more detailed and hollistic coverage despite the steady complaints over the years. Not that I'm excusing their lack of preparedness, I agree that more effort outside of the man-hours of gameplay can go a long way. But if games coverage is high on your list of priorities maybe use this site as supplement and not your primary source.
