@rwbladewing: I've seen a lot of people recommending the Trails series and I don't really get it. I've been attempting to play Cold Steel over the past few months and find the writing, especially for the characters, to be super bland. I'm only in Chapter 4 out of 7 so maybe it'll pick up and get interesting but I've been skipping chunks of dialogue so far, something I don't usually do. (Like, there's a part where your characters are being served dinner by one dude's family and it goes around to every character saying, "Thank you," and "That was good, thanks!" in the most benign and uninteresting way. That's been my experience so far.)
Rune Factory lets you tame monsters to pick crops for you/water your crops/plant seeds for you if you want. I'm really into this game, too, but people who slept on Rune Factory 4 are fucking idiots.
It's also weird seeing all these developers that used to make games that I enjoyed a lot more than the ones that followed. 1942 is still the best Battlefield, Treyarch has never topped Die by the Sword (4 player drunken Ogre Hockey all day), and Myth should have been the phenomenon that Halo is. Literally everyone who has played Myth/Soulblighter can hear the "casualty" voice in their head right now. Casualty.
Obviously you should play how you like, but I think everyone should at least try playing these games with permadeath and no save-scumming. It's hard for video games to make an impression on you in more than a superficial, story-prescribed way (like Aeris getting skewered or whatever). Losing a character you like to a bad tactical decision that you made can have a much more powerful impact on you.
This is kind of jumbled but I feel like permadeath, or losing all your souls in a Souls game, or things like that are some of the only ways to get an actual reaction from you based on your own interactions with the game, as opposed to just putting yourself in a character's shoes in a movie/cutscene.
Yo, I didn't watch all of this so maybe it was mentioned again later on. @brad You should really play Doom RL. Everything you know about how to play Doom transfers over in some way.
