A Very 2020 Top 10

You ain't here for this part anyway so just go ahead and check the list. FFXIV remains the game of all time. I redid this because I forgot two great games, whoops.

List items

  • Simply the only game that deserves to be called Game of the Year in the year 2020.

  • I was sceptical (as were most) of being able to make the jump from brawler to JRPG, but has so far managed it with aplomb. A superb dub and localisation makes the English language audio option worth checking out.

  • My first ever Platinum trophy on PS4, which has to count for something. A fantastic game in its original format, expanded and made even better in this release. Alternate Morgana is a hellbeast that should not be seen by anyone.

  • I'd only ever played American Wasteland before this. Immediately saw why the original games were so hyped because goddamn does this game feel amazing.

  • This is the first deckbuilder I've liked enough to get good enough to clear the higher levels, which I can't say about Slay the Spire, its spiritual predecessor in many ways.

  • Picross and murder, two great tastes better together...?

  • Truly awful campaign. Unmatched as a pick-up-and-play option for making cursed music. Occasionally lets you make blursed music that shouldn't work but totally does (use all the instruments from The Cranberries' Linger and the vocals from Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) and thank me later). So much fun to fuck around in, especially with an audience.

  • I never played original FFVII but knew enough through cultural osmosis. Liked the combat so much I wanted to dive right into a hard-mode playthrough, only to find it prevented you from using items. Fuck that.

  • My main mobile game this year. The tower defence gameplay wasn't necessarily a big draw for me, but upon trying it I was hooked. Have spent far more than I'd like to admit on in-game purchases.

  • The most(?)-requested Wii U-to-Switch port was finally made reality. It was pretty good! Would have liked a skosh more Fire Emblem (I finished off the Ashen Wolves DLC and did another playthrough of Three Houses this year, that game still whips). Good music.
