Prominent games that I still need to play:
A complete emotional roller-coaster that takes my favourite parts from Bioware and refines them into a pristine, gory mess of delight. This game is potentially genre-defining (some sort of 'Interactive Narrative Adventure'), and I want more of it in the industry.
What a spectacular year for stealth games. Not only is Mark of the Ninja charming and visually distinct, but it probably has some of the best stealth mechanics in the industry. I demand a sequel.
After playing through Dishonored without raising any alarms or killing anyone, I have to say that I'm a changed man. I feel so intimately connected to the streets of Dunwall City. I am Batman.
A redefinition of one of my favourite genres that nails 'fresh' on so many levels. It's a game you can't help go back to or root for.
A bloody, visceral, adrenaline pumping drug trip-out. I can hardly remember all the men I've killed, and I think I like it that way.
World of Warcraft finally hit me in my 'stranger in a strange land' like no other expansion has done to me before. Narratively-encapsulating, visually-breathtaking, and wholly mystifying.
Maybe the ending wasn't perfect, and maybe those sidequests sucked, but Mass Effect 3 is the finale to my favourite entertainment trilogy (only a couple steps ahead of the original Star Wars trilogy). I can't not love it.
Halo: Combat Evolved is a really special game to me, and Halo 4 is the first time since then that the singleplayer adventure has captured me in the same way. Not only is it gorgeous, but it really choked me up.
The 'indie art piece' of the year. A brief, expertly paced journey (I'm sorry) through a dead world that I will never forget.
More Borderlands. Really, that's all I need to say.
