Oh space combat games, how quickly you fell by the wayside!
You've probably already been recommended Freespace 2 and most of the old school space combat games. They're good but you get out what you put in, you know? The learning curves are steep all around. Freespace 2, which is really the epitome of the genre, doesn't really get good until a few missions in. Once that shit kicks off though, it's pretty fucking swell.
It ain't get much love but Freelancer is pretty boss, especially with mods. A Microsaffy Game Studios joint, it was a valiant effort to resuscitate the space game genre even if it fell short of some of its loftier promises. Unlike a fair chunk of space games, it's also pretty accessible (admittedly it's also not very deep either). Don't expect huge battleships firing broadsides and slicing open other ships, it's mostly single-seat fighters and freighters.
Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are... just ruddy fantastic. Space RTS might seem really complex but it's packaged in a way that after a bit of a tutorial you'll have no issue with it. The story is fantastic too - so often in RTS games the story is but a sinew to tie together disparate missions, but in Homeworld the story unfolds in magnificent fashion during gameplay. The bad side is that the missions are pretty damn challenging.
