  • Bulletstorm is an example of a certain kind of game. A game where the story really doesn't matter, even a teeny tiny bit. The gameplay loop is solid, the controls feel good and being stylish in combat is rewarded and encouraged. Super solid!

  • While my experience with Minecraft is relegated mostly to its alpha stage, I had a real good time while I was obsessing over it. The sheer joy of discovery and creating something that is truly yours was something new to me at the time. While I've not gone back to play it since the later additions to the game, I look back really fondly on the time I spent with it.

  • I've grown to really like Wadjet Eye's adventure games, even though I'm still far from having played all of them. I enjoy their brand of storytelling, and how their puzzles are sometimes more straightforward in favor of letting the story be told. I wasn't as sold on the combat though.

  • While sporting an excellent example of a flawed, somewhat relatable protagonist, impressive (at the time) animations and a cool story (not to mention an appearance by Dan Ryckert!), the thing that drew me to this game was just exploring the Los Angeles of the '40s.

  • I enjoyed this fun little Metroidvania and its cool shadowy aesthetic. The spaceship felt like a good fit for this style of game, where upgrading it felt like a natural thing to do, lorewise.

  • Though the general public may find the #grittyreboot trend kind of trite, this particular one appealed to me. Alice in Wonderland has always been a trippy story to me, and seeing it stretch in that direction to its fullest was neat. Be that as it may, I feel as if the game stretched on for far too long. To me, the appeal was seeing whatever the next neat take on the established characters and locales was going to be, and the game was in no rush to show them off. Each section could probably be shortened by like 50% and I'd be willing to bet the game would be better for it.

  • Analog melee! I quite like the contrast of the beautiful environments and the zombies. While I don't recall much of the story, running around pummeling the living dead was a blast.

  • A solid, though chaotic, fighting game that I didn't play too much of. I bought it for the characters, but was kind of put off by the whole 3v3 format.

  • I think this may have been the first Sonic game (other than Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcast) that I've played, and I really liked it! While all the callbacks didn't really do much for me, the gameplay was fun enough on its own.

  • A really touching story, with gameplay mostly consisting of walking and talking (except that one bit where it parodies a JRPG).

  • A quirky and fun visual novel about a bird high school, kind of? Not really my style of game, and not my type of aesthetic, but it was a fun distraction.
