  • While this game was a bit slow to start, with a long stretch before getting acclimated to this new iteration of the God of War-series and how it controls, what the general gameplay is like and the shift to a more open world, I ended up falling in love with it after a few introductory hours. This version of Kratos, stoic as always, but a loving (though he may not always be able to express it) father-figure resonates way more as an actual character.

I was about to type that the conversations with Atreus were always intersting to listening to, but I realized that the same applies to basically any conversation within the game. Be it talking to Freya, Mimir or the odd dwarven sibling pair, the world was always getting more fleshed out and the characters were wholly convincing, despite the trappings of the universe they were in.

The biggest pleasure for me in this game though is just roaming around, exploring, hunting for treasures and solving all the mini-puzzles strewn about the world map. It feels like it really rewards exploration without ever forcing it.

  • I was lucky enough to have played through the entirety of the game with the same squad, making progress together and voice chatting the whole way. This is not typical for me, I don't usually play games of this nature and especially in this way, but this really worked for me! While I think certain aspects of the loot aren't as satisfying as they could be, I think the action in itself feels really great.

  • I am by no means a fighting game expert, and the simplified combo system at play here gave me an easy way in, and I had a firm base to stand on before learning all the deeper combos and nuances of the different characters. I also am a sucker for this franchise, so seeing a good DBZ game made me happy!
