Why are they playing this as a duo?

Because it's way more entertaining.

I tried playing through Contra solo the other day because of this feature. After a few hours I had to give up and use the Konami code. Let me ASSURE you 2 player Contra is far easier than single player Contra(except maybe for the couple stages that are more about platforming than shooting).

The enemies split their focus, giving you opportunities to fire without worrying about dodging(i.e. you can bait turrets while your partner takes it down). You can fire in 2 directions at once taking down double the soldiers in the same amount of time(taking down the spiked snowplow things by yourself is very very hard, you just can't fire fast enough, 2 of your 3 lives gone unless you have the spread gun). Most importantly, you have double the lives.

There's a large amount of unavoidable bullshit in singleplayer Contra that is mitigated by having a partner. Watching Vinny or Dan slowly lose their minds grinding out a singleplayer run would just be frustrating.

@jacklynburn: Fair enough. I haven't actually had time to listen to them hash it out. Speculation is fun though :)

Totally agree about the Palmer thing having greater impact among industry people. I believe I said as much in my original post. Thus the gulf in opinion between the gaming masses and the GB staff.

I feel like the Palmer Luckey debacle is a bigger thing for game industry people than it is for gamers, and the giant bomb staff are industry people.

I don't know that any of the Giant Bomb staff are big No Man's Sky apologists, but I know that Alex genuinely enjoys that game.So having a dissenting voice in the room might definitely have swayed that discussion.

Or maybe No Man's Sky felt like the obvious, no brainer, choice and they didn't want to go for low hanging fruit.

In any case a garbage PR strategy for a garbage game(imo), leading to a months long toxic overreaction from the internet definitely wins it in my book.

In contrast the Palmer thing seemed like news for a week at most.

@zaldar: The population US is 318 million. The number of people who voted in the 2016 election is approximately 130 million. Trump got 63 million of those votes rounding up. 63 divided by 318 = 0.198. AKA 20 % of Americans voted for Trump.

Obviously not everyone out of those 318 million are eligible to vote. But you can see where GB got these numbers right?

I would suggest reading more carefully before you post angry.

Glad to see this game get back into the staff's mind. I was afraid it was going to be forgotten come GOTY time. I think this totally deserves to be on the back half of a top 10.

It's not going to be. I said Bloodborne wouldn't be either and some people thought I was crazy. This has no shot.

There has never been a Souls game in the top 10 and this one wont do it either. The fact that Bloodborne didn't make it and The Witcher 3 barely made it at number 10 shows that games that are long or games that are both long and difficult don't have a chance.

I think its important to understand that the loudest and most assertive voices on the GB staff prefer games that focus on immediacy of gameplay, narrative optional. This includes Alex, Dan, and most importantly Jeff.

Things that I have found that turn these guys off of otherwise great games include :fiddling with stats and obtuse/non-standard mechanics in rpgs, long complex narratives where the gameplay is almost secondary, games that take multiple hours to pick up steam and get "good".

Because of this I'll always look to Vinny or Brad for opinions on rpgs/narrative games. But when it comes to GOTY they've often been too willing to compromise in the past.

For example, 2011 GOTY podcast Vinny resignedly starts off the discussion on Dark Souls by acquiescing to the room at large that they can knock the game off the list even though its one his favorite games of the year. This is before anyone has said anything about the game, negative or not. Surprised, Patrick says he was willing to go to bat for Dark Souls with Vinny but by then they've already begun crossing the game off the shortlist.

So with Titanfall 2, Doom, and Overwatch all coming out this year, no way in hell is DS3 making the top 5, even if it deserves it. With all the other great games out this year, i wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't make the list at all.

@art_vandelay: Ya, dissapointing to see a Painted World rehash. After all the mystery and intrigue surrounding Londor in the base game, I was hoping for a dlc that took place there. Still one more dlc left. Hope for the best, i guess.

@Quicklyer: I think Dark Souls III was way better and more original than two, It can't measure up to Dark Souls I or Demon's Souls though.

Dark Souls 3 is obviously the most refined, and imo most fun to play gameplay-wise. Obviously also the best looking game graphically. Both of these things are important to a greater or lesser extent.

But the majority of Souls fans have judged DS3 to be way to referential to Dark Souls 1. In terms of narrative (lore, characters, enemies, setting, and overall worldbuilding) many people would say that Dark Souls 2 was, at the very least, original.

@pmurph03: I mean Dan deserves it. Even though he's playing it up a little, he's still laughing at their suffering.

@redfox0850: Dude Dan is happy as long as he's winning. He's unhappy when anyone else is doing well. Which is kinda why most people HATE Dan in these features.
