The GTAIV That Should Have Been

If you can’t guess by the title, I bought Saints Row 2. I probably shouldn’t have, as I now have zero monies to spend for the rest of the month, but it was half off at Blockbuster, so I couldn’t really pass up that opportunity, now could I? I certainly don’t regret it, because this is the most fun I’ve had with a game in the whole of 2008 and 9.

As you can probably guess, I was one of the millions of people that were pumped as fuck about GTAIV. This was THE game to get, and I would not have for a second that I would end up not liking it. But that all changed as soon as I fired the game up for the first time and played a couple of the missions. “Huh, these missions are kind of dull,” I said to myself. “But whatever, they’ll probably go apeshit like San Andreas did with its missions.” But that never fucking happened. Every mission was the same, with only two exceptions: Three Leaf Clover and the final mission(s). Those missions were the shit, mind you, but two missions out of, I don’t know, 60-70 just aren’t going to cut.

After many people had completed the game, marketing for a little game called Saints Row 2 started to pop up everywhere, promising all the bat-shit craziness that GTAIV didn’t deliver, and then some. And once I saw this I knew that this was the game I was looking for. Sure the graphics seemed a little wonky, and I was sure that there were going to be a shitload of glitches, just like in the first game, but I didn’t care; it looked too fun for me to care.

And that’s what Saints Row 2 is: fun. The graphics aren’t amazing, there are a lot of glitches and the story isn’t as “emotional” as GTAIV, but what it lacks in graphical finesse, it more than makes for in the terms of fun. And fun there is a lot of, thanks to a lot of balls-to-the-wall Activities. There are the standard sort of Activities, such as the Racing and Hitman Activities, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Over the course of the game you will have sprayed tons and tons of shit on buildings and people, snapped many necks in the Fight Club Activity, cracked numerous amounts of bones in the Insurance Fraud Activity and blazed many trails; and that is what makes Saints Row 2 my 2009 2008 Game of the Year. I applaud Rockstar for having the balls to do something different with their franchise, but sometimes you just have to play it safe and give people what they want: Mindless fun.

Of course, this blog isn’t just going to be about Saints Row 2; I have some other stuff to talk about as well:

I finally have my own TV. Before I got my TV, I was forced to play on the Bravia we have in the living room, but that proved to be fucking impossible, as my two stepsiblings were always hogging the goddamn TV, which meant I could pretty much only play when I was home alone, which didn’t happen very often, but now that I have my own TV, I’m definitely making up for lost time, especially now that I have a week off from school. It’s a 32” flatscreen that I borrowed from my dad and his girlfriend. They had it in their bedroom, but they never used it, so I’m borrowing it from them. I will eventually have to give it back to them, but I hope that that’s not happening soon. But when I do have to give it back to them, I have a 15” TV as a backup. Hooray! :P

Unless you’re living in a cave somewhere, you would know that the Killzone 2 demo came up on the European PSN Store. I downloaded it, of course, and I was blown away. Holy shit, this game looks good – even in SD! And my head further exploded when I played it on the Bravia with 5.1 Dolby. Everything about the game just emanates awesomeness; the graphics, the sound – it’s just a great, great overall experience. I’m definitely picking this one up at one point or another, if my economy allows me to do so, that is.

Another game that I’ve been playing is Fallout 3. Now, I did not buy this – my other stepbrother bought it – and it’s definitely not a game that I would pay for, but it’s actually kind of fun. I’m a bit burned out on it right now, even though I’m not very far into it, but it’s still kind of fun to pop it in once in a while whenever I want to watch some gruesome headshots (that Bloody Mess perk is a gift from God!), but it is definitely a bit too slow-paced for me – too much fucking walking!

I think that about does it for this blog. I’m going to my mom’s place in Jutland from Tuesday the 10 to Saturday the 14, so I’m not going to be on during that period – besides, I have a book report due by the end of the holiday, so I won’t even have time to be online. I’ll see if I can borrow my mother’s camera, so I can record some Guitar Hero: World Tour videos, and who knows? Perhaps a video blog?

Hooray For Writing Blogs at 3:00AM!

Hello everyone, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I certainly had a good one; ate a shitload of food, and spent time with some great people. I didn’t really get any of the things I wanted, but I guess that’s pretty much my own fault, as I didn’t bother telling anyone what I actually wanted for Christmas. Yeah, I wasn’t all that excited about Christmas this year, mainly because the weather in was so unbelievably shitty. Now, I expect the weather to be shitty when it’s winter, but this was just the wrong kind of shitty; no snow, just rain and gray. And it was just too cold to even be outside. Meh.

Well, anyway, I know it’s been a long, long time since I’ve last updated my blog, but I just needed to relax and not think of anything for a while. Getting up at for two months straight without any type of vacation can really suck the life out of you.

But enough about all this bullshit, let’s get down to the things I did/am going to do.

Surprisingly, I actually haven’t really done any gaming. I’ve pretty much just been sleeping, watching movies and uploading a shitload of images for points. And that I have done a lot of. Over the course of, like, 3 days, I increased my points by almost 2,000 – just by uploading images. Granted, I did make some easy text changes just to see how much I would get from them, and I was totally surprised by the fact that I got 120 points by adding list of the songs in Need for Speed Undercover. They must have increased the value of text editing, because I edited the fuck out of the Mortal Kombat: Deception page and I only got, like, 100 points for that. The rest were from image uploads. But even though you can get a lot more points from editing the actual page of a game, I just prefer to upload images, because it’s a lot easier and I’m just not that good at making blurbs and gameplay explanations and stuff like that.

I’ve also been on a Kevin Smith-binge, regarding the movies. I started out with Zack and Miri Make a Porno (which I watched 5 times), then Clerks 2 and finally Chasing Amy. I also watched Saw V, Hooligans and Max Payne.

  • Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Fucking hilarious movie. Loved every second of it. Pretty much the funniest movie I’ve seen all year.

  • Clerks 2

Also fucking hilarious. Fantastic dialogue and Randall is an awesome character. Also, Jay and Silent Bob!

  • Chasing Amy

A pretty “meh” movie. Some of the dialogue is funny, but the movie just didn’t do it for me.

  • Saw V

Just your random gore-fest. But it didn’t even succeed at that. They tried to focus more on the story, but that’s just not what I want from a Saw movie. I WANT GORE DAMNIT

  • Hooligans

Great, great movie. Probably the only movie with Elijah Wood in it that I like.

  • Max Payne

Absolute shit.  I didn’t even watch the whole movie – it was that bad.

Quick reminder before I finish this blog: I’m going to my mom’s place from the 1 of January to the 5 of January, so I’m not going to be able to comment on your blogs and stuff.

Update, I Guess

This is going to be a quick blog because I'm sitting on a train, and my stop is in about 15 minutes (hooray for free Internet!).

Mirror's Edge Demo Impressions + Some Other Stuff

From now on, you’re probably only getting these weekly updates, as I’m always fucking tired when I get home from school, due to my downright satanic transportation times (2 hours each way). I hope you guys can live with these sorts of updates. I’ll only post something in the middle of the week if something noteworthy happens, but other than that I’m going to keep the updates weekly.

I downloaded the Mirror’s Edge demo the other day (which didn’t actually take so long), and when I had played through the demo, I only had one thing on my mind: Mirror’s Edge. Buy. Now. Fuck me, this game is awesome! I have to give the biggest props to DICE for actually going against the flow by creating something that isn’t a shooter, RPG or sports game and instead creating something as original as this.

In case you don’t know, Mirror’s Edge is a Parkour game played in the first-person perspective. You play as a woman named Faith (who bears a striking resemblance to Bjork) who is a so-called Runner. Runners are a way to get classified information to each other without alarming the cops. The reason why people use Runners is because the city has become so sterilized and clean that everything and everybody is watched, so if the people has some illegal stuff they want transported to somebody else, they have to go to someone like Faith.

Mirror’s Edge uses a fairly unique control scheme that can be slightly confusing at first. L1 is for jumping, L2 is for ducking or sliding under obstacles. In combat you use R2 for punches and kicks, and these can be combined with a jump for a jumping kick or a slide for a sliding kick.

In yo' face!
In yo' face!

You can also disarm your opponent by pressing Triangle at the right time. It’s a fairly simple combat system, but it is immensely satisfying to smack your opponent with a perfectly-timed flying kick to the kisser.

Graphically, Mirror’s Edge is a treat. DICE has effectively created that clinical and clean city-look that they were obviously going for, with sharp colors and an overall “cleanliness.” If I have to say something bad about the graphics, it has to be the environments.

They don’t look bad or anything, but they’re just way too simple, and it’s very easy to just spot the best direction to get to your objective. But that’s pretty much the only thing I can knock the game for. There isn’t a lot of music in the game, but the music that is there kicks in at the right times to add some tension to the section where you’re being chased by the cops.

Overall, Mirror’s Edge is another must-buy for me, but it’ll probably have to get pushed back a bit until I get some money, because, y’know, Guitar Hero: World Tour and all that.

Speaking of Guitar Hero: World Tour, I preordered it 2 days ago. The reason why I preordered it (other than to be sure I get it on the first day) is because Gamestop is having an amazing sale: I preorder it, trade in four games, pay $110 bucks and I get the entire pack. The beauty of the sale is that I can trade in whatever game I want, besides Resistance. So I’m definitely trading in Motorstorm, which is a game I would normally only get 3 bucks for. Hooray! I’m finally getting my money’s worth for that game.

Another game that I’m trading in is Grand Theft Auto IV. Before you get all pissy with me, just know that I haven’t touched it in three months until now, so I ought to sell it. But I am trying to complete it before I trade it in, mainly because of the added trophy support the game got. Right now I’m just rushing through the game to get the “complete the game in under 30 hours achievement,” which shouldn’t be too hard, since I completed the game for my first time in 25 hours. But still, Idon’t want to risk completing the game in 31 hours, so I’m just rushing through the game right now, and once I’ve completed the game, I’ll try to get the other trophies. I am still enjoying myself, though, which is something I never thought I would do, since this is my third playthrough of the game. I love the single-player campaign of the game, but everything else? Not so much.

Still good after two playthroughs.
Still good after two playthroughs.

Right now I have just completed the mission where Elisabeta has killed Manny and the camera guy and you have to get them to the doctor, and I’m about 5-6 hours in, so I’m making some good progress. I’m hoping to have completed the game within two weeks.

END SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!

Phew, this turned out to be a pretty long blog after all, so I think I’m just going to end it here.
