Quint: Best of 2009

List items

  • This list doesn't even matter anymore but after buying a PS3 I feel compelled to update it.

Uncharted 2 is easily one of the best games I've ever played and that's not something I've found myself saying too much over the last few years.

Visually it's stunning, the attention to detail is unlike anything I've ever seen and the level design is absolutely spot on.

The characters are also handled fantastically, whoever wrote this has managed to create some believable and genuinely likeable characters, every interaction between them whether in cut-scenes or just as they banter throughout the 20 odd chapters of the game just feels so natural (something the voice actors only serve to reinforce).

The story is the kind of thing you'd expect to have seen Indiana Jones scrambling through 30 years a go, it's all ruined temples, mystical stones and intricate set pieces, all of which you as the player play through, this game never wants you to experience anything on screen as merely a viewer and as such I never wanted to put the pad down.

  • Definitely the best game I've played all year, Rocksteady did an excellent job making you feel like the Dark Knight himself.

  • Deserving far more praise and sales than it got, it's two fantastic campaigns on one disk, what more could you possibly want?

  • This hybrid of RPG and shooter is handled fantastically, neither genre hogs the spotlight, it's just a perfect blend of character development, loot and shooting things in the face, fantastic.

  • Easily the best racing game of this entire generation so far and probably my favourite racing game of all time, it's not only a truly enjoyable sim but the level of car customisation and community features make it one any car fan can enjoy in a multitude of different ways.

  • An enjoyable twist on the ever satisfying Halo gameplay and a good story that's very fun to unravel, well worth a punt for any fan of the Halo universe.

  • A very enjoyable action RPG in the Diablo vein, not the prettiest or most technically impressive game but certainly one of the most addictive and more importantly fun games I've played this year.

  • A superb throwback to games like Super Metroid and Castlevania, an extra few hours gameplay and Shadow Complex could have easily warranted a full blown retail release.
