Look at this Punk!! an unexpected reverence for DmC: Devil May Cry 0

note: I initially posted this on my blog, PATRICK RAINVILLE VIDEO GAME BLOG, but figured I should post it as a review on Giant Bomb as well. DmC: Devil May Cry (2013) is a game that should have come and gone, completely unnoticed by someone like me who’s rarely cared about action games.Sure, I loved Bayonetta (and who didn’t?!), but by and large these “character action games” I do not care for. This makes it all the more surprising to me that developer Ninja Theory‘s DmC has turned into one ...

The Hits and Misses: Uncharted Golden Abyss 0

Easily the worst title in the series, Uncharted Golden Abyss still manages to be a technical marvel on the Vita. Just don't go in expecting Naughty Dog's grandeur. The HitsA gorgeous adventure: Sony Bend has somehow done the impossible: they've ported the Uncharted experience to a portable device without it seeming like a complete bastardization of the series. Sure, it isn't the most engaging Uncharted title but it's hard to argue over the fact that it looks like an Uncharted title. The environme...

The Hits and the Misses: Final Fantasy XIII-2 0

Final Fantasy XIII-2 owes up to the mistakes of its predecessor while fumbling on the (few) elements that made Final Fantasy XIII any good to begin with. Consistently enjoyable though occasionally baffling, XIII-2 is the best Final Fantasy title since X.THE HITS:You want towns? We've got towns! You want minigames? We've got minigames!!: More than anything else, XIII-2's main goal seems to be rectifying all the fundamental elements of "FFism" that XIII either blundered or left out entirely. In th...

The Hits and Misses: Fable III 0

Like its predecessors, Fable III is an overly ambitious game that bites off a bit more than it can chew. Regardless, if you can look past its (plentiful) issues, you'll find a lot to love here. THE HITS The beautiful people...: The most immediate change from Fable II is the look of the game. The Albion of Fable II was a wonderful world filled with bulky characters, made even worse by a wildly erratic animation system that dropped frames based on how distant an object or individual was from the...

The Hits and Misses: Shadow Complex 0

The HITS:Metroidvania 2.0. It is hard to fault a game that emulates two of action adventure's classic titles, most notably Super Metroid and Castlevania Symphony of the Night. Harder still when a game iterates and improves tenfold on this simple exploration concept. The map is more detailed and easier to follow, retreading old grounds is made less monotonous thanks to new shortcuts and power ups.Right stick to aim, Right Trigger to shoot. Similarly, evolving on the near hack and slash nature of ...

The Hits and Misses: Alan Wake 0

The HITS  Fantastic Storytelling, start to finish. I thought this was gunna be this sorta cheesy Twin Peaks/ Stephen King spoof but it really comes into its own. The characters are fairly well done, the plot and background mythology go into Lost-calibre nuttiness while remaining coherent. The gameworld is littered with clues that are really easy to miss. It kinda reminds me of Bioshock in that to really enjoy this game you have to take it really really slowly. So many v...

The Hits and Misses: Enslaved: Odyssey to the West 0

The HITS  Beautiful world. Enslaved is, if nothing else, one of the more memorable game worlds I have visited in a long time. Adding green to the now derivative "post-apocalyptic" setting was one of its strongest ideas and really helped keep a stagnating genre alive. Oftentimes, you are given Uncharted 2-like levels of beauty when staring off into the distance. For a multiplatform game, this is nothing to be scoffed at. Fantastic characters and storyline. With a game focusing ...
