I'm with Jeff here on what i thought this category was going to be. Everyone else (except Vinny) describing super specific mechanical things about the environments and traversal and trying to compare them sound crazy

Your whole first post was about how big of a game changer this is if every game starts running at 60 fps. That's not even close to happening, simple as that. Nothing in the article even hinted at that. Notice how the article keeps saying it will hit native 4k across a lot of content. It doesn't say 60 fps across a lot of content because the cpu is still weak.

I would never guarentee everyone will use it to hit 60 FPS (any developer can be all over the map performance wise), but the article straight up says:

Clearly this is just one game, but the point is that Scorpio doesn't just scale Xbox One engines to 4K. For the Forza engine at least, there's overhead, and plenty of it.

But okay man. You think it will be weak, I think it will clearly be more powerful than anything on the market and run everything better and that's a good thing.

I think you're just misunderstanding what they're saying. It has a really good GPU so it will hit higher resolutions easier like native 4k and can add more/better graphical effects. But the cpu is what's tied to frame rate and it's still is based on the same weak cpu as the other consoles. They're saying in the article since the gpu is powerful there's still more gpu power left to make the visuals better.

I didn't say the console is weak, I said with that cpu it's not made be a 60 fps machine and wont be able to in most games (especially since most new games are open world now). But image quality should be good and it can hit native 4k.

@rangers517: ... did you read the article? It's a powerful machine. Running ultra settings on Forza at 60 with room to spare is no joke. Digital Foundry was impressed and they know what they are talking about.

@artisanbreads: well yeah, that's exactly what I said. Games that were 60 fps on xbox one will obviously now be native 4k 60 on scorpio. I have no doubt it will do 60 in sports and racing games just like the other consoles. I mean, nba 2k was just native 4k 60fps on the ps4 Pro. Those types of games are much easier to hit that target. None of that comes even close to saying open world games or whatever will be 60 fps. It's still the same weak cpu with a couple tricks to try to offset that a little bit, but it's definitely not a 60 fps machine.

@artisanbreads: where are you getting this 60 fps stuff for scorpio? It's still based on the same jaguar cpu as the other consoles but a little higher clocked than the Pro which was higher clocked than the original ps4 and xbox one. There's no way it's going to run everything at 60 fps.

They've already said the goal of this machine is to make xbox one quality games run at native 4k and that's most likely what this will do.

The scorpio reveal stuff is coming at such a weird time where every other platform is getting these great games and they've had nothing at all. Seriously there's been like 10 highly reviewed games already this year and what, 1 of them is on xbox? (RE7) Instead they're canceling games like Scalebound and have barely anything announced for the future, while sony has a huge amount of big stuff coming like Last of Us 2, Spider Man, God of War, Death Stranding, GT sport, Days gone, Detroit and a bunch more i wont even list.

And MS's answer to all this is...6 teraflops. Good luck with that pitch I guess.

first off why does the new friendly alien race look so terrible? they almost look like bad sonic the hedhehog fanart and also from their necks up to their heads it looks like one big blurry texture.

I don't know, all of the characters in this just seem generic or bad. Just think back to how awesome characters like the Illusive Man and Anderson were. Not only were their voice acting and animations great and way better than the ones in this game, but they just felt like important interesting characters where you want to go through every single dialogue option and really take in what they're saying.

From the 10 or so big characters ive seen so far in all these videos, nobody seems to be even close to the level of the characters from the first 3 games.

And why does it feel like there's no music or atmosphere in any of the game or story moments.. everything's just so flat and lifeless. since they didn't seem to come up with good new stuff they should just take this galaxy map music or this and use it in any dramatic moments or even in the menus.

edit; actually after listening closer it does seem like the map has kind of a worse version of the original map theme, and it's really quiet.

I have no idea what Jeff is talking about regarding Horizon. The Pro version runs in 4K at 30 fps just as the non Pro version does. And according to Digital Foundry they run on par in terms of smoothness, meaning they both hold 30 fps the same way and one doesn't dip more then the other.

Ya, I came here to post the same thing. Heard him say that on the last bombcast too and was confused and then I read and watched a bunch of comparisons and everyone else says the 4k version runs at exactly the same framerate.

First off sorry to hear about your mom Jeff. wishing you and your family well.

now kind of a correction for the Pro stuff. I think their problem understanding it is because they talk about it like it's the tiniest bit more powerful than the regular ps4 or something. It's a bit more than double the gpu power, 30% faster cpu, more ram for games, better memory bandwith. I mean, it's not the increase of a new gen but it's still a pretty big bump. The Cerny DF article detailed a lot of this tech and he also talks about extra hardware built in that helps with this stuff.

Vinny also seems really confused about the power needed to run native 4k stuff. There are already like 18 games(here)that are confirmed to be native 4k on the Pro. And no that doesn't just mean it's a 4k signal it means 3840x 2160 res.

Most big AAA games going forward aren't going to be native but instead Cerny said a lot will render at a higher res than 1080 (like 1800p) and then use the checkerboard technique to get the rest of the way to 4k. Which even though it's not native, people have been really impressed by how close it does look. DF said for the price this seems like a great upgrade after seeing these games in person.

looks kinda bad. Sounds like it's not going to be very powerful spec wise and then the reason it's not powerful is to be able to carry around that big bulky tablet? seems like the worst of both worlds.

If it's really cheap I may get one but I'm with Jeff in that I'd rather get a Tv only edition if it's a lot cheaper than what this ends up being.

also the ergonomics of the default stuff looks terrible and I bet the battery life ends up being poor
