I Live My Life a Can of Monster at a Time 0

Here’s a riddle for you: What do you get by combining fast cars, multiple customization options, FMV, and real world car icons? Well, you get a lot of weird moments. You also get a surprisingly fun game hampered by frustrating network issues and bizarre glitches. This game is known as Need for Speed. If the title is any indication, Need for Speed is a reboot of the popular racing series. 2013’s Need for Speed Rivals was a solid first entry on current-gen consoles, but it was also the...

Batman: Arkham Origins Review (The Clown Prince of Assassins) 0

Batman doesn't take any of Alfred's crapBatman had been subjected to terrible video game adaptations until Rocksteady released Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. He officially became the world’s greatest detective, and comic fans rejoiced. After Rocksteady made the first two games, Warner Bros. Montreal had the unfortunate task of creating a third Arkham game that would stay true to the combat mechanics and fantastic stories while avoiding making the fans angry.Arkham Origins takes p...

The West Coast is the Best Coast 0

Five long years have passed since the release of Grand Theft Auto IV, and numerous open-world games have been released during that time. Not all of these games were amazing, but specific games like Sleeping Dogs changed the way that open-world games are played. With the release of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar Games set out to prove that they are still the kings of the open-world genre, introducing a three-protagonist system and incorporating the random events of Red Dead Redemption.GTA V follows...

Should I Hide the Unconscious Guard or Throw Him Out a Window? 0

This review only covers the single player portion of Splinter Cell: Blacklist. Stabbing necks, hiding bodies, and avoiding security cameras are important skills to learn when becoming a spy, and Sam Fisher has long been known as the master of such skills. Unfortunately, Fisher’s last adventure (Splinter Cell: Conviction) removed some of these skills to make a more streamlined action game for broader audiences. While Convictionwas a well-made game that sold well, fans of Sam Fisher craved a more...

How Much Nolan North? 0

Chimichangas, budgets, and voice acting are rarely used as the basis for serious video game stories, but High Moon Studios didn’t try to create a serious game when they made Deadpool. High Moon chose to create a game that focused on crazy dialogue, violent action, and dick jokes. Most of the time, Deadpool fulfilled the goals that High Moon set, but the experience did occasionally fail to entertain.Deadpool isn't a fan of plot points.Deadpool focused on the titular character and his quest to cr...

This Should be Bad Boys III 0

When a new game is being prepped for release, there are multiple opportunities to build or destroy expectations based on what the publisher does. In the case of Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel, EA managed to destroy most expectations by laying off an entire studio shortly before the game’s release date. This move would normally indicate that the publisher has no faith in the final product. This may or may not be the case, but Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel does a fine job of exceeding these lo...

A Rocket to a Cyclops' Eye 0

Serious Sam has generally been associated with three main concepts – large open areas, mass amounts of enemies, and running backwards while frantically shooting these enemies. Serious Sam 3 features these main concepts for a majority of the game but tries to combine them with shadows, flashlights, and smaller weapons. The result is an unbalanced but decent experience that sometimes feels like two different games.Killing Enemies with Rockets Never Gets OldSerious Sam 3 begins with the titular Sam...

Catching Criminals With a 440 Six-Pack 0

Driver: San Francisco is one of those games that will either become an addiction for most gamers, or it will make those gamers hate it for the innate weirdness of the setting and story. Thankfully, this weirdness is enough to draw the player in before the entertaining and slightly ridiculous gameplay take hold.Driver: San Francisco starts with the series’ main protagonist, John Tanner, being part of a vicious car wreck with his nemesis, Charles Jericho, which results in him being in a coma. Duri...

Killing With Whale Oil 0

When stealth-action games are created, developers strive to find a fine balance between games being soul-crushingly hard and too simplistic. This balance is not easy to reach. Many games such as Hitman: Blood Money and Deus Ex have successfully reached this balance, but many more have failed miserably. With their game, Dishonored, Arkane Studios was able to avoid creating the next Velvet Assassin by striking a perfect balance between stealth and action.Dishonored is the story of Corvo Attano, th...

Beating Hydra One Counter-Attack at a Time 0

Video games based on super heroes or movies are the most frustrating products for production teams. These teams are given a short amount of time and a small budget to put out a game that coincides with a release date. Most of these games have terrible quality, and they sell very poorly. However, Next Level Games breaks this cycle with Captain America: Super Soldier.Cap’s new game avoids following the light action plot of the movie by centering on an expanded version of an action montage. This mo...

If Jason Statham Made a Video Game 0

Sleeping Dogs had one of the most confusing and drawn out development periods in video game history. The game started out as Black Lotus, an open-world crime drama developed by Treyarch. However, the game was cancelled early in the development process before being picked up by United Front Games. Black Lotus became a part of the True Crime series before being cancelled again for being too much of a risk for Activision. Fortunately, the story on this game was far from finished. Square Enix purcha...

Is This World War II Satire Worth Playing? 0

As I raced across rooftops in Paris, I kept thinking about what had gotten me to that point--my choice to snap a Nazi’s neck in front of his commanding officer. If I had only been more stealthy, I would not be running away from Nazi soldiers, Zeppelins, tanks, or fighter planes. Instead, I would be wandering the bustling streets of Nazi-occupied Paris looking for a bar. When developer Pandemic set out to create The Saboteur, an open world game involving Irish mechanic/freedom fighter/womanizer Se...

Finding Loot Has Never Been as Fun 0

Borderlands is one of those games that comes out of nowhere to capture the hearts of fans and critics. The specific color scheme, the quests, and the million plus weapons all combine to create an extremely addicting and satisfying experience. Over the course of the 20-hour campaign, you will meet a colorful cast of characters that include a quirky robot and a Russian arms dealer. You will also come into contact with dog-like monsters, giant bats, bandits, soldiers, and other enemies (we do not w...

Electric Avenue Gets Interesting Down South 0

I have to start this review by stating that I despised the first Infamous. I found the characters irritating, the missions repetitive, and the gameplay loose. It is understandable then that I dove into Infamous 2 with some hesitation. Thankfully, this hesitation lasted roughly twenty minutes into the game. The opening mission introduced new characters that were actually likable, new enemies, and some impressive new electric powers. The game only got better from there. For those who are unfamiliar...

Captain Jack Isn't Just for Kids 0

Ever since Johnny Depp stumbled into our hearts as Captain Jack Sparrow, we have been clamoring for a video game adaptation that captured the feel of Pirates of the Caribbean. Until now, most of the attempts at digitizing Will, Elisabeth, and Jack have been fairly disappointing. Traveller’s Tales have changed that streak of disappointment with Lego Pirates of the Caribbean. Why is this adaptation successful? The main reason is that the developers stopped trying to write witty banter for the chara...
