Where To Even Begin

Well Hello There, I didn't see you come in.

So I dissipated from GiantBomb for *looks at date* six years. But not lost! All I've been doing is listening to the bombcast for my weekly(ish) fix.

You didn't come here (or find me..) to hear me talk about the past, so im going to talk about the lesser past!

Game Stuff

Gears of Monsters Inc
Gears of Monsters Inc

My wife got me Disney Infinity for the PS3 for my Birthday. I have a kid now that demands a lot of the attention I have at home, and sometimes it can be difficult finding that perfect piece of content that's both Age Appropriate, and doesn't make me want to take a 9mm to the side of the head. Disney Infinity really fills that niche well. I can play this game without feeling like I'm bored or going out of my mind, because for a kids game focused on Disney characters; I was quite surprised to discover how unnervingly violent it actually is. The first thing we did, was play as Sully and his first mini-game in which I shot my college campus student body so hard with paint-balls, they'd literally explode into dismembered pieces! I realize it gets away with this because technically they're all toys, but when was the last time you strapped a cherry bomb to a toy and didn't feel slightly guilty about how uncharacteristically and unnecessary excess in wanton destruction what was you just done. And to make matters worse, it's not just paint-ball that earns you the points, oh no, you can beat up your fellow classmates American History X style with your bare fists. You know for those times where your in the middle of reloading. It's completely legit Paint-balling, right? (Technicality and all: but Why does Sully's paint-ball hopper only have like 10 rounds at a time before needing to stop to 'reload'? Who puts that little ammo in their marker?)

But why's the rum gone?
But why's the rum gone?

It didn't stop there neither, it really started getting that extra special brand of fucked up when playing Capt. Jack Sparrow. This dude now uses a sword, which looks and feel like no bullshit plastic wimpy sword I've ever seen on a toy (it even makes real sword noises when swung around and hitting things, like enemies), and to make matters more hilarious: A FLINTLOCK PISTOL WITH INFINITE AMMO.

It's funny how much the entire thing reminds me of Dreamworks and PIxar, and not in characters or anything. I mean that it's made for kids, but the creators know that the parents will also be there supervising, so they make it enjoyable for the adults too. I mean, my wife and kid are having a great time looking at all the pretty visuals and helping me out in choosing set pieces to make in toy box mode, and I'm having a great time satisfying my blood lust by slapping down an enemy generator or two, and going on a fucking rampage over here.

I think ultimately speaking, my PS4 has gotten a lot more time and attention than any other console in my household, and lets not make a mistake here: It's mostly just been the good ol Netflixtube. That said, I've mad eit a point to download every demo, grab every PS+ deal possible, try out most indie games, and buy as much PS4 goodness as I can in order to get some use out of the poor ol' boy.

So heres a quick rundown:

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition: Didn't play the original version, so this was a very welcome edition to enter my grasp. I really enjoyed it from beginning to end (finally).

Trials Fusion: Meh. Didn't like these much back when it was a flash game floating around the internet, don't like it much now especially considering I have to pay for it.

Resogun: I don't think anything has stolen more hours from my life in recent memory than this game. Probably because it was one of the few games I could just pick and and play and enjoy myself like back when I did this EXACT same thing with Geometry Wars when I got my brand new Xbox 360. Hey.. wait a sec..

FIFA 14: Ok I confess, sports games aren't my bag. But my name is in the credits on this one, so I gave it a shot, and I actually really liked it. Though I still know nothing about Soccer, and still don't really care.

Battlefield 4: It's battlefield. It's difficult to go wrong here.

Need for Speed Rivals: Oh god, this soaked up SO much of my free time when i finally plunked it in the disk tray (yes I bought the physical copy. I was young and stupid.) But the online mode was a "Ghost" Town to me (hahahaha, GET IT?! don't worry I've already slapped myself for that one) as I was pretty much the only one I knew at the time who bothered getting a PS4 on launch day. I should really pick it back up again, now that my friends list has evolved since that point, and more people I know own it.

Call of Duty Ghosts: Don't own it, and never will. It's REALLY difficult to give even the slightest crap about this franchise any-more. I wanted to mention it here, because I can already tell someones going to ask if thats one I have. I don't.

Mercenary Kings: I want to love this game SO much. I lvoe the art style, the animation, and the gun play. It reminds me straight up of Metal Slug and Gunstar Heroes. But on the other game, the gameplay mechanics dont lend itself to very intense combat, the need to stop and heal myself ruins flow, and the reloading OH MY GOD the reloading. It's a cute take on Gear's active reload, but damn. Im using a gun right now that only fires twice before I have to reload. ITS PAINFUL. I also cant stand the mission design. The levels are cute, but the mission design just slays me.

So thats all I've got. Decided to keep the update list mostly PS4 related (with the PS3 exception above). I'll update again soon with the stuff I've been playing on the PS3, Vita, and maybe even PC. Who knows.

Cheers!

Fallout 3: Combat Emphasis Trailer (Custom)

Its a fan made custom trailer of Fallout 3, i find it near criminal how many official trailers exist (1 by my count) and just a bunch of random gameplay vids :\

so i made one! Killed off almost an entire weekend in the process but it was worth it!

http://www.blackjagstudios.com/portfolio/fo3.php

Its both embedded on the page and there's a link to the download. (i recommend the download). The video is rendered in 720p and uses no existing clips from anywhere. All footage i captured myself and the sound has been completely rescored using assets that exist within the games run-time libraries.

Please check it out and let me know what you think!

if for whatever reason you fancy compression
@YouTube with in SD Widescreen and HD Widescreen (though i think YouTubes encoder knocked the HD versions audio off synch)
@Vimeo with "HD On" though im pretty sure Vimeos encoded purposly cut out frames, seems noticably choppy to me
and if you like things punishingly small: @Gametrailers
Though i recommend from the source in all its glory

and for those of you who like this kind of stuff, heres a production still

Please comment here, let me know your feedback :)

Age of Mundane

So close yet so far
So close yet so far

Some friends of mine coaxed me into trying out Age of Conan for the past week.

sorry to all those who play it religiously but your in denial, what your playing is a stripped down World of Warcraft clone without all the cool and refined content. There are onyl a few reasons i can gather why you'd play AoC over WoW
1. To get away from he 11.5+million community strong and into a 100,000 strong more concentrated camp
2. You really dislike the stylish art found in WoW, and would rather go for rippling muscles, Phong shading, and stiff boobs (ie. semi-realism, if you can count a Necro summoning demons realistic)
3. you really dont want to admit that as far as MMOs go, WoW is the best, and would rather break away from the status quo.

now i know what your thinking "But DV? how can you say all these things? Your highest lvl in wow was 23, how can you even try to compare?" let me talk about First Impressions here for a second.  And how goddly important they are.

For Wow, your right of passage into the game is getting your Mount, which used to be Lvl 40, now lvl 30 to help speed thigns along for those with other things to do in their life than grind. From here the game takes off into what the meant and potatoes of the game is all about, and i find the prospect exciting the whole time, wishing, wondering "Man i cant wait to ding to that level to my guildies"
For Age of Conan, im hearing shit like Lvl 70 is where it starts to kick off into the actual game.  What? FUCK that.

Trisfal Glades (may not be best example, but im lazy)
Trisfal Glades (may not be best example, but im lazy)

Wow has an interesting aesthetic. Sure its simple, its designed to run on even low end computers. Its the Warcraft3 engine for god sakes. But its not about the Tech, its what they do with it. Its a surprising amount of variety in the animations, animation blending, the modeling, the smooth shading, the weather effects, and even spell visuals. Each area is DISTINCTLY different, you really do know if your stepping into Troll territory, over the Undead lands of Trisfal Glades.
All of the classes have a unique design to them giving further distinguish, and all armor classes while generic in the beginning begin to wildly make you look different form the rest later on.
Age of Conan has none of this. You choose form 3 different types of humans, male or female, adjsut a few sliders, and get covered in the same generic barbarian armor the entire time. It appears FunCom has noted that its armor looks ugly and unappealing enough to include an option in the game settings, to turn off your helmet and a couple other things. Yeah thats reassuring...

Not saying its all bad
Not saying its all bad

Also during my playthrough i found myself getting incredibly bored. Not that the gameplay is boring, actually that unique aspect of it is what keeps it entertaining a bit longer. But rather the visuals, while the normal mapping and high poly count work to its advantage, everything jsut looks so samey. So ho-hum, very run of the mill. So far ive traveled through planes, flat lands, grassy planes, and more flat lands. Ive ocassionally gone through the winding passageways of a semi-linear 'forrest' around a beach i think, but nothing noteworthy. None of the enemies stand out either, and this is another thing WoW has done better: unique enough enemies and abilities to distingush making them memorable. You definitly know the difference between a Duskrat and a Murloc. But in AoC, its the same savage tribal member time after time. I dont even know what theyre called, jsut bait for my pets.

What kind of bothers me though the most, is that i have played Anarchy Online, and as far as MMOs go, its probably one of the cheapest most refined experience, its deep and the community is massive. AO was designed and developed by FunCom.
So why the crap is FunCom so blatantly ripping off  WoW so much?

But i digress, i can certainly see SOME appeal there, but maybe its just not for em i guess. Some hardcore AoC players i know express that if it werent for how awesome the AoC community was theyd probably be playing WoW.  All i saw was the AoC community constantly talking about beating kids in basements and constantly ripping on WoW, so whatever community that is, ill take squabbling squeakers complaining how much a certain class got nerfed anyday.

Remember, 2nd comes right after 1st
Remember, 2nd comes right after 1st
So to wrap this up in a neat little bow let me express in a summary what im talking about: Age of Conan is boring. Less interesting to looks at, less variety, and certainly less refined from what could otherwise be a great MMO experience. With just a few more content patches, some hammered UNIQUE ideas, and the ability to skip conversation trees to get to the fucking grind quest, i can see the gold there. But regardless, its always going to be a silver medal no matter how much FunCom tries.

going the distance

Been playing WoW in my spare time. Whatever little of it ther is.

clicked in 4 hours now, im sitting pretty at the bring of the tipping point for lvl 12 as an Undead Fire Mage, Professions being Herbalism and Inscription, and on the server Ner'Zhul

what really bothers me is WoWArmories ability to update a bit more often then once per lifetime. I tipped over lvl10 as fast as i could to be 'official' and until that profile shows up, im still just faceless :\ Hell, i even have 10gold already how can i NOT be up there by now :(

(ps. im well aware it updates once every 24h im just frustrated)

i love being a mage, anyone got any tips or strategies one could point me to for getting the most out of this class? Being a Damage dealer is my idea of a good time

EDIT: Speaking of WoWArmory,  this is the first character i ever made in WoW a couple years back.
Whats more interesting? The one in question im playing as now, is an Undead Fire Mage by the name of Phosphorus on a different server :) Why not just continue with this one? I lost that account years back...

G-log #8.1: List of Suggested Fixes, needs your help!

Hey! Just thought id quickly share my thoughts on what Ubisoft should do to FarCry 2 to make it an A-Class must play shooter! Especially since they deny an SDK to the general public for the Dunia Engine

  • Clan Support
  • Clan Tag Support
  • Multiplayer Demo Recording
  • Multiplayer Demo Playback
  • Add medium sway to .50
  • Add slight inaccuracy to .50
  • Add slight sway to Dragonuv
  • Pistols needs to be alot less useless. Add some power to these. The small clip vs damage ratio is laughable
  • Beef up the power of the MP5
  • LMG needs more accuracy deterioration for spray and praying mayhem
  • Add a Prone stance
  • Friends List
  • Favorite Servers List (Address Book)
  • Add more modes, here are some suggestions:
  •  - Assault
  •  - Bomb Planting
  •  - Blast Chamber (Napalm Edition) [someone needs to trigger a napalm strike, once triggered its a mad dash to the safe zone, and in the safe zone its a deathmatch to force others to respawn out of the chamber]
  •  - Espionage [one team tries to sneak into another teams base and steal intel, once the round is over the teams switch roles]
  • Server operator adjustable parameters, like which guns to include/exclude and other parameters

these suggestions are just based on my experience so far. Im sure theres a billion other tweaks that need to happen.

Anyone else got any suggestions? Id like to compile a list to submit to Ubisoft or something in an effort to make this game shine. Theres DEFINITELY possibilities for true greatness here, and if Ubi cares like their little vid doc suggested, maybe theyll take them into consideration!

G-log #8: Ahh there we go

So it appears my greivances with the .50 in FarCry 2 are not just single minded. Thats pretty comforting to know actually, that im not the only one who things that .50 is jsut "Point @ Dude + Click = Win". With a gun that doens't sway even when standing up, perfect dead accuracy, no bullet travel time, semi-automatic, and a single shot kill with every location save for the feet? Looks like a winner to me! </sarcasm>
What makes me laugh hysterically though, is how someone can come back with what the OP said "this weapon is a sniper rifle and should be a one shot kill like in RL." Dude, we abandoned RL long ago for the aforementioned reasons.

All Ubi needs to do to balance this weapon, is make the bullet do 15% less damage and give the thing some sway. It just not exactly fair that i can be slammed in the leg from across the entire fucking map and die instantly without a chance to react, purely because i didn't see the dot in the far off distance. A headshot i can understand, and a headshot id respect. That takes some skill.
But otherwise, were dealing with a perfect semi-automatic AWP from counter-strike, but let me tell you: the AWP was at least bolt action. The fully automatic snipers in CSS had TERRIBLE accuracy effectively making them useless.

Game balancing 101 my friends.

on the other hand, i finally enjoyed some intense firefights instead of pure sniper wars last night. Was good times, and i enjoy it. I just still wish the MP5 had jsut a bit more power behind it. Its a little sick how a person can take 14 9mm rounds and still be healthy enough to chop my legs off and take my girlffriend back home out for diner.

*sigh* Just some balancing issues need to take place in order to make the multiplayer experience really shine. The addition of a MODE or two past Team Deathmatch, CTF, and Control Points would be grand! People are rallying for Assault, which sounds cool so ill vote for that :)

Maybe Nintendos not as dumb as i thought

Some reason i was thinking about the name "Wii" and speculating the change base don my ignorance towards the companies practices.

then it hit me, "Wii" is a synonym for "small" at least in slang terminology. They changed it to the Wii from 'Revolution'. Maybe the name was sparked from something so cool because Nintendo realized the Wii may not be sparking the "next best thing evarrrr", calling it the Revolution now would just be mocked by everyone who isn't a nintendo devotee, so "Wii" may have been chosen to subconsciously call it a "Small Revolution" and also a good marketing term to sway away from "Begin the Revolution" or something to "We Would Like to Play" meaning "Us, Together" etc. Probably changed because they themselves coldn't get the controller to do what it was originally designed to do, hence the new attachment that still hasn't come out yet.
because if it stayed "The Nintendo Revolution" what the big N would be symbolizing is "A revolution of low-grade bargain bin games en'mass" as well as bringing your Nanny in to play some "Fair Games". :) They saw this coming, so the name change ensued.

This isn't mean to be taken seriously though, jsut a fun little thought that crossed my brain while i came back to work from Dairy Queen.

Holy crap, put down the sniper rifle already

Is alot of fun granted. But heres an idea, can we try, oh i dunno, using something OTHER than sniper rifles?
Theres a few other neat guns, like grenade launchers, flamethrowers, stuff like Machineguns, MP5s, etc.

All im saying is ive been in 12 matches now, and not one of them has been anything other than a sniper war. I do WANT to use other guns but i can never get close enough without being capped from across the level. By the Barret .50 no less, in a single shot.

FC2 can really lend itself to intense firefights and multiplayer mayhem, but nope, everyone wants to be a sniper. :\ Not only is that boring, but very frustrating
