I'm glad we solved the Mass Effect debate last year in the forums
Anyway, I think I said last week that ME would be a great game to play for a series because the crew has such different opinions about it and there's always something to talk about. I'm pretty stoked you're making videos about it! I don't love any Bioware games, they're too uneven and buggy and badly presented(you talked about texture pop-in in Mass Effect 1 - may I introduce you to Dragon Age Inquisition which was just as bad seven years later on a different engine), but I do love parts of pretty much all of their games. And the parts that are bad are easy to make fun of, like when the first game reuses like three warehouses for all of its side missions. A playthrough like this should be a ton of fun to watch.
Mass Effect and God Hand let's plays at the same time is a pretty great double feature lol
I think the whole thing about Bison's psycho drive, spare bodies and the dolls are a Street Fighter Alpha thing. In Cammy's original SF2 ending it's revealed Cammy had lost her memory and only remembered Bison scarring her face after trying to kill her. Bison postulates she was his old lover who lest her memory in an accident, but nobody believes he's telling the truth. I suppose this was easily retconned as him lying and her remembering wrong, but if you want a reboot of Street Fighter where Bison is more human and none of the doll stuff is a thing, they can return to that original story in some way. However, if they move past SF3, none of it matters since Shadaloo is done.
I said in the mail that SF4 just reproduced SF2's cast upon release, which was pretty inaccurate. At launch in the arcades the cast was that of SF2 champion edition plus four newcomers, and when it came to home consoles they had added in Fei-Long, Cammy, Gen, Sakura, Dan etc. The point I tried to make was that they started with SF2's roster and worked from there, compared to how Street Fighter 3 kicked out everyone besides Ryu and Ken for New Generation(Akuma came back in Second Impact, Chun-Li finally arrived with Third Strike). SF4 also kept all these characters faithful to their original incarnations, while SFV did not.
I agree that the ideal balance is some amount of the old cast and some new guys, but I really get the impression that the new guys are the least important ingredients here. They absolutely leave their impression on the game - a few fan favorites like Juri or Menat appear, characters like Abigail and Rufus both disgust everyone and see a lot of play because they're good, and so on. The old Street Fighter 3 cast absolutely have their fans, despite the initial reaction, and I love a number of them. But in terms of selling the game, I think most people just care about playing their old main. Like even the idea you came to, of rebooting it back down to basics, just sounds like it would be the old SF2 story and characters again. It would've been interesting to see how SFV's roster would have been received without the awful launch state of that game, 'cause they've chosen a ton of new characters compared to what SF4 did.
Personally I don't know what I want, which is why I asked the qoestion hahah. I both want the old characters I love, but I also want the story to progress and move to new heroes and antagonists. It's really nice to see Sakura grow up and get a job in Street Fighter V, for instance. Or Cody going from hero, to prisoner, to another chance, this time as mayor. On the other hand, I don't want all my SF2 dudes to return middle aged and bummed, or just be lost to time.
Thanks for taking my mail! I spent a long time thinking about this stuff.
Why’s everyone confused what the bonus episode will be? It’s dragonball evolution. Its one of the worst movies ever made. How can’t you be curious what that movie is.
Yo, I've seen Dragon Ball Evolution, and I don't wish that upon anyone
@redhotchilimist: Super is nothing more than cheap Dragon ball Z fanfiction, it was made by Toyotarō, he became famous because he did Dragon ball fanfiction.
Super actually kinda sucks. The arcs are all good ideas but the writing is generally awful and the characters read like fanfiction. The new character designs are all pretty good though. Beerus and Whis are awesome.
I haven't watched any full episodes of Super because it seems pretty bad and fanficcy, but hey, if ASG covers it? I'm gonna follow along no problem.
This was a ton of fun, so happy you covered this show. Like, I don't know what your plan is for ASG after the break and specials, if we're jumping into the final arc or what, but I'm glad to follow wherever you take it. I had only read the manga before, and it was fun to both see the anime first hand and also get you guys' take on it.
Android 16 just loved nature - cue a flashback to when Dr. Gero got very worked up because he didn't wanna wake up this pacifist in case he would destroy the world.
About the Super Saiyan 2 reveal, I feel like this is the anime's fault in general. They started giving people lightning effects in their auras a while ago just to look cool. In the manga, as far as I can remember, this is the first time someone's aura includes that stuff. Along with Gohan's new haircut, it wasn't a problem to see he had reached the next level, especially when Cell comes back and his aura has the same electric sparks.
I have a sealed copy but no PS2 and I’ve been worried this game has aged poorly, and while it’s definitely a problematic fave, this looks at least just as good as I remembered from the let’s plays I saw back in the day. Masafumi Takada’s music is the icing on the cake! (...Did Jun Fukuda also compose for this?)

I wanna say Jun Fukuda only did the guitar track that plays whenever you activate the God Hand, but when I tried looking it up I have a hard time finding out precisely what he was doing. Definitely looks like Masafumi Takada did the majority of this stuff.
At least I found this summary of a GDC talk he did on the music.
For God Hand, developer Shinji Mikami told Takada that it was a pretty hardcore game so he'd like the music to relax things a little bit. Takada also decided he wanted it to be catchy and nostalgic. If you've played God Hand you'll have noticed the music is very old-school videogame sounding. It's upbeat rock and techno with a lot of guitar solos. This could be the nostalgia Takada was aiming for.
He also used a lot of repetition of musical phrases and motifs. He says musical memory is much like smell memory in that a tune can trigger very intense memories for a person. In God Hand the bosses undergo transformations and appear more than once. Takada would repeat melodies for the boss fights but present them in different arrangements and orchestrations so the player will recall their last encounter.
Anyone notice the way that Alex talked about playing through the Mass Effect games?
Well, I would be down for turning Alex's first playthrough of the Mass Effect series into a new video series. It would be fun to see those games again through the eyes of a first timer.
Considering the spread of how the cast feels about Bioware games(Vinny usually loves them, Alex can't stand them, and Dan doesn't give a shit about the story), I think it would be pretty entertaining to watch a Mass Effect series. I like parts of those games, but I have a lot of frustrations with them, too. What they're always good for is giving you something to talk about, one way or the other. You'll never be bored for topics.
