Glad you liked the review, I'm happy that someone took time out of their day to read all my petty nitpicks.
Since I beat the game and wrote his blog post, I've gone back and gotten the Platinum trophy. Partly 'cause I love the game, partly 'cause it was easy. And some of my opinions have changed since then. While the combat is very simple and a bad fit for bosses and all, beating up goons in the Kingpin and Demon sites was my favorite part of the sidequest cleanup. Really mixing it up with all the different gadgets and upgrading them helped out with the tedium I felt during the main story missions. As did liberal use of knocking dudes off ledges and webbing them to walls. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the trap, if put on an enemy, can attach itself to another enemy and slam them together, which is very effective(and romantic). Most of the sidequest are, as expected, pretty dull, though. I resented finding batch after batch of corrupted college students for Philip Chang in particular(I'm amazed that even he was based on a comic book character). It was fun to see Screwball being a terrible streamer, and it was cool to see Taskmaster do my finishers on me.
About the web swinging, while holding down R2 absolutely gets you to where you want, of course I did what I could to make it more fun. Timed the X-presses, held and let go of R2, all that jazz. But for me that wasn't really enough to make it feel exhilerating. I'm not claiming to be a master at it or anything so maybe there is some unplunged depth I haven't found, but I could not make it super interesting to do. Still a fun mode of traversal, though. I don't think it's bad as much as I don't see the hype.
And yeah, the loading times are very impressive. And while the loading screens that just show Spidey in the air are a bit dull, I adore the fast travel ones. Especially that they replaced them once the Sable forces took control over the city.
Finally, I wanna plug this video by TheGamingBritShow which came out today. Me and him are on the same page when it comes to a lot of gaming stuff, and I think he gets across much of what I was saying in this blog post more effectively while addressing different aspects of it than I. Of course he's also got lots of observations of his own that I didn't think about.
