Donkey Kong Country (SNES) is a great game and I will fight you with my fists if you disagree.

2 Quick Thoughts on 2 Sequels

  • Now that I'm really into it and starting to get awesome weapons, Borderlands 2 is giving me all the joy that its predecessor provided. It starts a bit slow, but it becomes exactly what it should be.
  • On the other end of the spectrum, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is everything a sequel shouldn't be. I loved the first game, but I'm so bored that I'm skipping through dialog and rushing through puzzles. I think it was the uniqueness of the first one that made me fawn for it. Tapping the screen like a mad man and solving ridiculous puzzles just doesn't thrill me this time around. I'll still finish it, but I'm quite disappointed.

As soon as I started BL2 I noticed the graphics were much more glossy and although the beginning -is- a bit slow it does pick up rather quickly and draws you into a much larger and more thought out plot that the first game. The weapons are insane the further along you go and level. The game was hand down much improved upon from the first game (which was still fun even with its loose plot) and you can tell Gearbox not only took their time and made a better game but there were a lot of things they seemed to listen to the fan-feedback on too.

I got to the part of Borderlands 2 with Tiny Tina and I hate her, and I also hate Claptrap and Handsome Jack and, well, most everyone else in the game, with the possible exceptions of Lilith, Roland, and Mordecai. For that matter I kinda can't get interested in the game. I mean, yeah, it's more Borderlands, but at the moment my feelings on that seem to amount to "eh". I really wish Gearbox hadn't put more story in the game now, they seem pretty fucking terrible at it, and to be honest the idea of an actual story in Borderlands was not something that I found myself really wanting for. It's a loot game, like Torchlight and Diablo in first person, and none of those games have particularly deep stories either.

I dislike Claptrap, Tiny Tina is just a wreck (i played all her missions on mute), the character handsome jack was really annoying. All this game was for me was a good coop shooter. But hey im just a dude on the internet.

I liked Handsome Jack. I think he's a really fun villain to hate.

Then why buy it? Did you do not follow anything Gearbox was putting out about the game as they were developing it?

I bought it because I enjoyed Borderlands 1 and I wanted Borderlands 2? I mean, I knew there were some annoying characters but I didn't know I would hate them that much. Besides, I tried to word that sentence to say that the idea of more story was all right with me until I realized how awful the dialogue is.

I mean, I'll still finish the game, the actual playing part is still mostly good, if sometimes fairly unbalanced, and everything is far more varied this time around which was one of my main complaints about the first one. I don't necessarily feel like the story in this one is bad, not really, I just strongly dislike the characters and the dialogue in it, and the idea that they weren't at all necessary to the game makes it that much worse.

So I guess what I'm saying is that the atrocious dialogue is making this game worse.

I actually really enjoyed all the story stuff and characters in Borderlands 2. I thought Handsome Jack especially stood out with some fantastic voice acting and witty dialog.

I actually just finished it the week before, and I was mostly unimpressed. Just more of the same to me. There was never really a moment where I thought, "Wow, this is really cool" after finding a rare gun. Shotguns have scopes now. Okay...? I exclusively used a pistol with infinite ammo for the first half of the game because I didn't want to spend hours digging for loot like I was for the first few hours. Maybe I'm just bored with loot-driven games because I felt the same with Reckoning.

The writing wasn't terrible -- it had interesting story beats -- but it heavily catered to dumb Internet humor. First few hours had multiple instances of Claptrap having conversations with himself about crying and Handsome Jack talking about Butt Stallion or whatever. I'm not 16 anymore so "boner-fart" isn't going to get a reaction out of me. References to Top Gun, TMNT, or "Welcome to Die" in Borderlands 2 fell flat, but maybe I'm just really goddamn tired of nostalgic humor.

Using the original playable characters as NPCs was a nice touch, but it's one of those "We'll stay here while you do everything for us" type of games that annoy me. Save your own fucking bird, Mordecai.
