Gaming Update - 8/7/08

So i've been playing some games lately.

- Finished Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction sometime last week. Enjoyed it thoroughly. I was really in the mood for a platformer and that really hit the spot. It was my first Ratchet and Clank game i've ever played, but i'm definitely planning on playing any future releases of the series. Starting with the Quest for Booty coming out on the 21st. Looking forward to that.

- I realized that I had bought Shadow of the Colossus sometime last year but never opened it so I finally did that and played a bit of it. I beat the first colossus and am really excited to play more. But...

- I got God of War: Chains of Olympus in the mail today, and i'm stoked to dive into that. I'm gonna do that right after this in fact.

- Just before writing this I finished up Braid. And let me tell you. That is one hell of a game. The $15 price tag may look steep but i'm so glad I decided to pony up the money because that is an experience i'm never going to forget. The game is beautiful, artistic, and very challenging at points. It makes you think pretty hard about some of the puzzles. I strongly recommend you don't use any sort of walkthrough too. I didn't and it felt amazing every time I would finally figure out one of the tougher puzzles. Some of them take some time, but just don't give up and keep trying new things. Oh, and on top of all this the story keeps you intrigued the whole time trying to figure out what exactly all of this info being dumped on you means. Even the story is extremely atristic and seems like the developers put a lot of time and thought into it. But that goes for everything in the game. Especially the puzzles. Don't hesitate. Buy this game!!

Top 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2008

So after seeing Dboy's top 10 list, I got motivated to do my own. There are so many great looking games coming out this year it was tough to narrow it down to 10, but I finally did it, so here's my list!

More web slinging action.

Oh snap!
Oh snap!
9. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe -
As i'm sure everyone else was, I was pretty skeptical when I heard that the first next gen Mortal Kombat game was gonna incorporate characters from the DC Universe. But after thinking about it a bit and watching some footage, i've grown to be super excited for this one. The DC characters seem to have been done right, and the aerial kombat looks like it could be an interesting addition. And the flash is in it? Well hot damn count me in! Can't wait to beat the living crap out of Scorpion with him.

Decisions, decisions...
Decisions, decisions...
8. Fable 2 -
It's hard not to be at least a little bit interested in this game. Listening to Peter Molyneux talk about it is just straight up gripping. While I was interested before, I read an article about it in GamePro at one point that made me say "Oh wow that's gonna be awesome". It was talking about the types of decisions you'll get to make in the game and it gave an example saying that you might get to make the decision at one point to be tortured, or make the beautiful woman next to you be tortured. And to be the heroic type, you'd probably take the beating yourself. But the consequence is that you will be deformed and scarred for the rest of your life, and people will treat you differently because of how you look. That alone makes me want to play this game.

The new WoW? I doubt it but here's to hoping.

7. Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning -
While most MMO's usually perk my interest at least for a little bit, this one really caught my attention. The art style looks great giving the game a bit of a goofey cartoony look while still keeping it looking dark and gritty, the PvP focus of the game sounds fun giving you the ability to form up a huge group to raid a city and in the end take over the city for your own faction, and the overall look of the UI seems simple and easy much like WoW. If this game lives up to my expectations, it could be sucking a lot of time out of my life once it releases.

Co-op done right.
Co-op done right.
6. Left 4 Dead -
This one has been on my radar for a long time. The idea of being thrown into a zombie infested area and being told almost nothing but "Survive" is incredibly appealing to me. I also like what they've been saying about how if you don't work together, you won't survive. I just hope the AI teammates aren't completely worthless incase you can't get a full team of 4 to join you on your zombie killing adventure.

5. Fallout 3 - I was pretty disappointed with the demo shown at Microsoft's press conference, but that doesn't mean that i'm not still super stoked for this game. Looks like a nice blend between Bioshock and Oblivion with a nice twist on it. The individual targetinng of body parts seems a little dumb to me, but maybe it'll turn out to be something I love when I actually get my hands on it. And one other thing that really grabbed my attention is that you start out as a baby. I'm really curious what you'll be doing as a baby. My guess would be some neatly integrated
Bloody greatness.

tutorial teaching you how to do certain things you'll be doing when you're grown up only you'll be learning by using baby toys and doing things babies do like learn how to walk and eat. But that's just my guess. Only time can really tell.

I'll play some more Gears of War any day.

4. Gears of War 2 -
I put countless hours into the first one, and i'm betting i'm gonna spend just as much time with this one if not more. The demo at Microsoft's press conference got me even more excited for it. With more finishers, more guns, better cover, more multiplayer modes, more epic scale battles, meat shields, and a longer campaign, I really can't see how this could go wrong. I'm just hoping that the campaign is something more like 10 hours instead of 6.

3. Mirror's Edge - I can't pinpoint what it is, but there's just something about this game that really gets me pumped every time I see it. There just hasn't been any games like this before. I like the very clean, white look to everything along with the first person view which really seems to make the speed and action in the game seem much more intense. My only worry though, is that
Beautiful and Original.
Beautiful and Original.
there isn't going to be much of a story. I can't really think of any way the story could be meaningful, though i've said that about a few other games and been wrong before. Maybe it's just the overall originality of the game that appeals to me so much, but whatever it is. This one is a must have in my book.

Creativity at it's finest.

2. LittleBigPlanet -
I don't feel I really need to explain myself here. I'm sure everyone with a Playstation 3 has this on their radar at this point. The sheer depth of the game is mindblowing and the potential that it has is off the chain. I'm mostly looking forward to seeing what other people make, and then playing their levels though I will definitely be making some of my own. I'm gonna need some people to play with though cause nobody I know owns a Playstation 3, so add me to your friends and we'll make some crazy levels! Rezzolution17 is my PSN ID.

This is it. The one i've been waiting for.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - I can't even begin to describe my excitement for this one. Over the past week, i've watched all 6 Star Wars movies, all 25 of the animated cartoon network episodes, and after this blog I think I might put in some Knights of the Old Republic to get me even more excited for this one's release. The entire idea of the game is exactly what I would want from a next gen Star Wars game. And being a badass jedi with tons of force powers at your disposal isn't even the most exciting part to me. I'm most excited for the story element of it. It seems like they're going all out with the story and making you feel emotionally connected to this character which I find super exciting. And on top of all this, the new Star Wars movie is coming out which actually looks pretty damn cool to me. This game has been on my mind for a long time. And it's finally almost here. In less than two more months, i'll finally be diving into the next chapter in the Star Wars saga!

E3

So overall i'd say that this year's E3 was pretty mediocre, but there were definitely some things about each press conference that i'm excited about as well as some games that weren't in the press conferences that are still holding my intrigue. So i'm gonna watch through the conferences again skipping the boring parts and give you my impressions.

Microsoft
- Don Mattrick is goofey.

- The new Xbox experience was definitely the stand out announcement for myself and many other i would presume. But my reason for excitement is a little different than most. Though I think the look of the whole thing is pretty childish, the party system is something I have been wanting for quite some time. Mostly just because you can chat to your friends exclusively while playing online and not have to listen to the numerous 10 year olds screeching into their microphones calling eachother gay. Another feature that I found pretty neat was the whole Netflix thing. Now I don't have a Netflix account but if I can just watch any movie in the Netflix library at any time, I think I might have to pony up the $15/month or whatever it is for some movie watching action. And lastly, the most exciting thing about the whole re-do to me is something that was announced after the actual press conference in a much more quiet way. with VGA cables, you can now view your 360 in 2 new 16:10 resolutions. 1440x900, and 1680x1050. This is exactly what I need because I play all of my games on my 1680x1050 monitor and at the moment i'm having to play in 1280x720 which is pretty damn annoying to be honest.

- Seeing Fallout 3 at the press conference got me a bit down on the game. I thought the combat looked a little strange how you can pause time and aim at certain parts of the body, and I also thought the game would be more action oriented which left me disappointed. But after watching some more features and demos, i'm warming up to it a bit. And is it just me or does the Fallout designer guy remind you of Cliff Bleszinski?

- Resident Evil 5 looks alright. I never finished Resident Evil 4 mostly because I could never get over the fact that I can't strafe while aiming, and it doesn't look like they've that changed for this one, but i'll probably give it a try anyways.

- Fable 2 looks like more Fable. Which isn't a bad thing. Looking forward to this one. The first one was fun.

- Gears of War 2 blew me away. I knew it was gonna be awesome but that demo blew my expectations completely out of the water.

- John Schaperd lol.

- Xbox Live Primetime sure looks like it's not gonna last very long. But real prizes? Wonder what those will be.

- Geometry Wars 2 looks fun, though i'm ashamed to admit I never played the first one.

- Galaga Legions doesn't look very much like Galaga. More like Space Giraffe or something like that.

- PORTAL STILL ALIVE!!!

- You're In the Movies sure looks dumb.

- So does Lips.

- Final Fanfafy Firfeen on the 360? Pretty big announcement there. Though I never played any other Final Fantasy, that trailer got me excited.

Nintendo
- SMILE!!!

- Holy cow. This lady is...unique?

- Shaun White snowboarding looks like it will appeal to lots of people but it's just not for me. And I don't really feel like getting a balance board. Like ever.

- Animal Crossing looks alright. WiiSpeak looks worthless.

- Reggie's up! I like this guy. Wait...he's talking numbers.

- Wii MotionPlus is super exciting to me. Mostly because this opens up the possibility of a good lightsaber game. The sword battle game in Wii Sports Resort looks like a good start but it really needs some improvement to satisfy my expectations for a good lightsaber game.

- Star Wars Clone Wars looks pretty mediocre. Would have liked them to wait and implement the Wii MotionPlus. Seems like a lightsaber game without it is just going to end badly.

- WiiMusic has gotta be one of the worst ideas ever. Maybe kids will like it, but jesus. Watching grown men pretend to play intruments with this was just plain sad.

- Not gonna sugar coat it. This press conference was just terrible.

Sony
- I really like Sony's setup.

- I really like this Jack Tretton guy. Like a lot. Hope he hosts again next year.

- Resistance 2 looks pretty good. But i'm with Jeff Gerstmann here. Something just doesn't look quite right about it. Hopefully you get regerating health this time around.

- The LittleBigPlanet idea was really clever. I can't wait for this game.

- Playstation 3 video store was bound to happen sooner or later. I probably won't use it very much but it's neat that they finally did it.

- Home looks about the same as it did last year.

- Quit talking about PS2 please.

- Ratchet and Clank looks cool. I like the idea of it being downloadable. I have Tools of Destruction Gameflying its way to me right now so after I play that i'm sure i'll be more excited.

- I'm super excited for DC Universe Online. This game looks awesome. I don't think there's any way it could live up to my hopes, but if it comes anywhere near, it's gonna be one hell of a game.

- MAG. Um... I really don't know what to think about this. It sounds good in theory but I can't see it working out as well as they say when it actually launches. Prove me wrong please.

- God of War 3 looked good in the CG trailer. Looking forward to seeing actual gameplay. I really hope you get to end the gods for good in that game. That would be epic.

- inFamous looks pretty cool. Hope it turns out to be good.

- This was definitely my favorite of all of the press conferences. Was entertaining and had great content.

Other Games That Stuck Out To Me
-
Far Cry 2. Looks like it could be a lot of fun. Reminds me of Crysis a bit which is to be expected.

- Prince of Persia. I really like the art style and the combat looks interesting.

- Sonic Unleashed. Please bo good. Please be good. Please be good. Don't let me down.

- Killzone 2. I'm really liking how this is looking. I think I could end up spending a lot of time playing the multiplayer portion of this.

- Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. I love the MK series, and I was obviously skeptical at first but this is looking like it's shaping up to be awesome.

- Crysis Warhead. Yes please. Give me more Crysis. Now.

- Spore. I'm still not entirely sure that I understand this game but it looks like something i'm gonna have to check out for sure.

- Dragon Age: Origins. I love me some dungeon crawler action. This one looks pretty damn good. But if i remember right they siad single player only? Or maybe i'm crazy. I'm probably crazy.

- STAR WARS: THE FORCE UNLEASHED!!! I can't even begin to describe my excitement for this game. I'm a huge Star Wars geek and this looks like exactly what I would want from a Star Wars game. This and LittleBigPlanet are my number 1 most anticipated games at the moment.

- Mercenaries 2. While this game does look fun, I don't think i've had that moment yet where it hits me that this game is awesome like it seems everyone else has. I'm down for making some shit explode though.

- Tomb Raider Underworld. I loved the last one, and this one just looks better. Definitely a rental though.

- Dark Void. This game has a lot of promise. The jetpack looks pretty sweet.

- Bionc Commando. Dude he's got mad dreadlocks. I'm so in. I think Re-Armed looks better though.

- Lego Batman. After watching The Dark Knight i kinda wanna play some Batman. But i'm not sure I can handle another Lego game. Hmm.... Maybe that's why DC Universe Online and MK vs. DC look so appealing.

- Halo Wars. While i'm not that big of a strategy game fan, this one looks like something I might wanna try out.

- Mega Man 9. Awesome. Gimme some more classic Mega Man and i'll love you for it.

- Fracture. Looks like it's gonna be pretty good to me but the whole terrain deformation idea seemed like a much better idea last year. Seems like it might get kinda dumb after playing a bit.

- This is Vegas. No matter how much I don't want to like this game, I really like it.

- Darksiders: Wrath of War. This game suprised me. I had never even heard of it before E3 but it looks like it could be a lot of fun. it seems like a good mix between God of War and Zelda. I'm on board.

- Dead Space. I'm not a big survival horror fan, but the limb severing idea is so appealing to me.

Well I guess that's about it. There's so many games coming out this year. Gonna buy as many as I can but geez it's gonna gert expensive. Thank god i have a GameFly account. Thanks for reading!

Giant Bomb First Impressions

Welp, it's finally here and it's got more promise than I could have ever expected. The first thing I noticed when coming to the site last night is that the art style was really slick. The cartoony look just makes the site all the more welcoming. After that I started to look at everything you can do here. I watched Jeff's tutorial video and got super excited. This seems like it's going to be the Wikipedia of video games plus much, much more. Obviously, the Giant Bomb staff could only supply so much content by themselves before launch, so the site is nowhere near it's true potential. But give it some time and some help from all of us and this place will be off the chain with content. So all in all, i'm super pleased with what the site has to offer at launch and super excited with what the site is soon to become. Now let's get to editing some pages!
