GOTY 2011

I spent a good part of this year playing old games. That isn't unusual, but I was so busy this year that old games ended up taking time away from new. So this list is practically "games I played in 2011." Sims Social ended up being my only cut.

I could argue that Mass Effect 2 belongs on my list since I played it for the first time this year on PS3 but that kind of felt like cheating. Honorable mention to Deus Ex, Metroid Prime II, Dungeon Raid, Pacman DX CE, Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 and Half Life that I played and really liked this year.

I wish I would've played Saints Row 3. I have Assassin's Creed: Revelations and NBA 2K12 that I have but haven't really played.

Slightly less honorable mention for Infamous that was fun for about 3/4 of the game, or Fable II which almost was a good game.

List items

  • The only game that I played this year that I just couldn't stop playing. It was short, and I wished it was longer, but if it had been longer I probably never would've left my PC.

  • They still haven't made a Zelda game that doesn't piss me off with one of its mechanics (funny how it's a different mechanic every time) and yet, I've had moments while playing this game that brought literal smiles to my face, and fist pumps to my arms.

  • People will laugh at me for this, but I like the Gears storyline. This wraps it up quite nicely. I had more fun in the competitive multiplayer when it was in beta than reality, but Horde is awesome and I wish I had a couple friends who were willing to go the whole way.

  • I got bored after about 75 hours. Before that though I had an awesome time with this.

  • My first Pokémon game ever. Ok I get why 9 year olds love Pokémon. I love Pokémon.

  • Proof that iPhone can faithfully present pretty deep and immersive games, at least if they're more than 20 years old.

  • Surprisingly fun for at least a little while.

  • They're getting better, they really are. It's still not very fun to play the actual game. But the fantasy booking is getting better and more enjoyable. If this game came out in the summer I might devote more real time to it.

  • I really wanted to love this game, but it ended up being pretty disappointing overall and kind of felt like a waste of money. Makes the list by default.

  • I had a lot of fun for the first couple missions, but ultimately hated and quit this. It was this or The Sims Social coming in at #10.
