Some Thoughts On Video Games: October 2017

Since my Extra Life stream theme was based on playing a bunch of PS3 games the entirety of this list keeps that theme too. Although some PS4 games will be noted as well. Since I decided to pay for a month of PS Now to check out some overlooked experiences that I just didn’t find the time for in the past. Almost like I’m turning back the clock when I used to check out games from Blockbuster every other week. Renting games must be where I got my focus from whenever I decide to mainline a game I buy these days. It isn’t quite a speed run but I’m certainly ignoring a bunch of side content. Other than a assortment of special cases that is almost never an issue since the main path tends to be the best stuff anyway. Let’s dive into this headfirst and see how many games I can compete in 31 days.

List items

  • Goosebumps was a fun kids horror book series that I enjoyed when I was younger. Now they made a video game based on a movie which is usually never a good sign. Surprising even me Wayforward decide to make a classical adventure game. Even more so than I expected with some annoying puzzles that made me feel like I went back to the 90’s again. Both in a good way since I haven’t played that style of game in a while and in a bad way. Not quite knowing what I needed to do next is pretty much how this style of game works. Although I don’t quite appreciate being able to pick up a bunch of useless items that don’t get used to solve a puzzle. After finishing the story I looked up some extra details and it appears that some puzzles are randomized. Which does encourage replaying the game a few times but the story isn’t strong enough to revisit it after the credits roll.

  • Blue Estate seems to be some kind of comic that I never heard of till now. As for this game it’s a light gun shooter without a light gun. Using the PS4 controller as a replacement is not even close to being good. Even with extra time to react the game barely scratches by with some guns having generous auto aim. Yet the missions without auto rifles end up being painfully annoying. Plus the last thing I want to do is repeat a mission over again thanks to how repetitive it is. Half the reason light gun games work is that holding a fake gun feels pretty cool. Without that this little game only has its poor humor and nonsensical story to keep it going. Neither of those factors are good. Leaving me with a very bad video game that might be slightly better if I didn’t have to use my dualshock 4 like it was wiimote.

  • Not much to see with this one. It’s a low budget hidden object game that was ported to the PS3 system for some reason. With a nonsensical plot about a detective solving a crime caused by voodoo it doesn’t have any redeeming points. Some adventure game elements are present with a few puzzles between the hidden object sections. With all the elements being extremely straightforward the only real issue is locating stuff in the normal environment. Still by the end it did serve it’s purpose of just being something to waste some time on.

  • This is 100% a adventure game in the vein of Escape From Monkey Island. Also known as controlling one character as they explore a environment to solve a puzzle to continue the plot. Almost every puzzle is easily solvable by locating the correct item. It never felt like I needed to know how the developer devised a situation for me to solve it. For some the challenge of the puzzles is part of the fun but I do appreciate this style where it’s more about the interactions with the characters. Although you won’t see a ton of characters to interact with they are all likable. Plus the general setting of chasing down a master thief that has decided to reappear years later is up my alley. Getting into the mystery by trying to solve it as a Swiss policeman named Zeller who doesn’t know when to quit and see how the thief manages to pull off his antics is a solid hook to keep most players interested in seeing more.

  • I’m sure someone has explained why the developers decided to make this first instead of Warframe. Putting what would be a space game starring cool ninjas into a cold war setting with a infection that turns people into monsters. Maybe if they did something other than giving the main character a throwable blade arm this could have been more than just a bland third person shooter. The only unique thing they do with it is making it possible to charge a element on the blade to cause different deadly effects like burning enemies to death. The rest of the game is just your run of the mill TPS. Which isn’t aided by the almost nonexistent plot about some guy trying to infect the world. I couldn’t care enough to pay attention to any of the character names. By the end the “good” guy wins and uh thats about it.

  • Might as well get another game that was inspired by Agatha Christie out of the way now. The developers in this one directly bought the licence instead of drawing heavily from it like in The Raven. Unlike that game this one is more about putting together thoughts by examining a crime scene instead of picking up everything in the room. Also has obscure lock box puzzles that must be solved to find clues. The absurd mechanisms in those puzzles make me overthink them a lot. When the answer was pretty much spelled out every time. Since I never read the book this was based on the mystery of figuring out the truth was well done. Additionally I appreciate the cel shaded art style even if no one in this game had any sort of animation other than stiff looking movements.

  • Nothing about Yaiba trying to get his revenge on Ryu is good at all. All of the dumb humor doesn’t help either. Yet if you let all of that go the base combat is good. Assigning 3 different weapons to different buttons gave me access to any tool I needed quickly. To deal with a variety of zombie types that slowly expand into different elemental enemies. Which must be countered by using the correct weapon. As you might assume the later battles can get quite hectic when you have to fight two different types at once. This is also aided by a very vibrant cel-shading art style. Which is easily the only thing that makes it even close to bearable. Along with the fact it is quite short.

  • This is a very mellow experience highlighted by an occasional dramatic scene. Rain forever falls in the world a curious boy who decides to enter a portal after seeing a girl being chased by a monster. Once he enters he no longer has a body and can only be seen thanks to the rain. Which could have easily been a problem for the player since not being able to see your playable character can certainly be a issue. Yet the wet footprints or mud keep it from becoming a problem. Other than just running around the main gist of the game is solving simple puzzles to continue the storybook like narrative. Which is told entirely by a sentient line of text that pops up as the boy makes his way from one scene to the next. Even though this was a simple game I really just enjoyed the gloomy ambiance of this other world. Maybe I just needed something that was mostly a relaxing romp through a spooky town.
