Video Game Memoirs Volume 1

Hey! It's time to clean up my random writing on different video games that don't quite fit in anywhere else. Looking at this list after finishing it really has a heavy focus on platformers. Nothing will ever beat jumping real good in a video game apparently.

Part of this was supposed to be me playing all the SNES online games. Then I gave up after the first two hahaha. Oh well now it gets to be apart of this list instead. Anyway lets get to my hot takes! (slightly sizzling takes is more like it...)

List items

  • Seeing someone else start to play through SM64 and revisiting it myself has let me see a new perspective on it. While it certainly set the stage for 3D collectathons it also has some flaws that I overlooked till now. The camera being the worst one. Having to slow down because the angle is horrible happens on almost every stage. Especially once you get to the tougher ones. Mario also doesn’t control that well. Pretty easy to just fall off

a narrow platform because of his momentum. Still a great game that has some real issues. Yet as the games go on Nintendo starts to get better and better at making a 3D Mario game.

  • This is a short game that thrives on the player to get better with some simple mechanics. One bullet with the ability to shoot down via jumping in the air. Each room has up to 4 enemies in it and it is up to the player to survive. Simple yet effective at keeping my interest enough to keep playing it till the true ending was unlocked. Which will likely take about an hour to two.

  • With Google just giving away months of Stadia subs for free I did take a bit of time to play through one of their exclusive games. As a puzzle game mixed with plenty of horror elements this is a solid experience. The presentation goes a long way to make it quite the creepy little game with a lot of up front elements that really just want to tell you what this game is trying to get across. Which it does well enough but it never really has much impact other than some cool monster designs. If you're in the mood for a spooky horror game with a bit of stealth it might be worth checking out.

  • This has been the most blast through a game with a friend game I’ve played in a while. The amount of story seems to imply someone would care about it but it really doesn’t land at all. Combat also feels really off compared even to the first game. The snappiness just wasn’t there which is too bad. Still a lot like the Borderlands games if you just want to play through a game with a friend this one will let you do that.

  • The super early 3D feels like it would keep me from enjoying my time with this game. But I still found it fun enough to make my way through the three different routes. Each route has different levels and bosses that test your flight skills. Without the very poor frame rate I could see this game not holding up for everyone. While I could look past it that seems like that’s thanks to my nostalgia more than anything else. Unless you really can’t stand the frame rate issues I think it’s worth playing through the easy route just to see what early 3D games looked like. Plus it’s super short so it won’t take much time at all.

  • I’ve had a few encounters with this series over the years. Never really had the urge to try to finish one of these games till now. Even then I only succeeded after using the very helpful rewind feature built into this collection. Most of the reason I felt like finishing this version was that it feels more like a fair game. The jump mechanics reminan similar to before but it really feels like I have better control than the NES version. Plus all the weapons have their uses and each boss has a pattern that can be overcome with a bit of patience. It’s just getting to them that is quite the task. Each level is set up in a way that very much wants to kill you if you don’t do the right thing. Once I could see all the different tricks it wasn’t too hard to overcome each challenge. If only Arthur could take more than 2 hits this could have been more of a reasonable video game. Thus making it a hard game to recommend anyone play it unless you want something really tough.

  • Insomniac's first attempt with this franchise shows they know what they are doing. Especially in the moving around the world sense. Swinging around in New York is a fun time. I spent more time just going to where I needed to be via swinging than using the fast travel since it is that good. The combat is about what you would expect from a superhero game in this era. Hit square a bunch and dodge attacks that are set up for counters. Sure spidey has a cavicate of gadgets to even the odds and every suit has a special power that will help out in combat too. The amount of suits you can change into as the game goes on is crazy. It’s obvious they really cared about this game and it shows. Pretty soulid first attempt and it sets up the sequel fairly well too.

  • Remedy really are the masters of setting up a world you want to see. Setting up cool moments and mysteries that just lead to more mysteries. Aided by some ok combat that gets real good once you have all the different powers the game divvies out as it goes on. By the end of the game Jessie becomes a levitating god that can destroy anything in her path. Takes a bit to get there but the weirdness makes it worth seeing. They really are too good at having at least one neat musical moment in their games.

  • Going back to Knack now really shows how much it was rushed out for the launch of the PS4. They focused on making a character with a bunch of particle physics and made a Playstation one mascot action platformer. Knack also has a real lack of moves leading to most fights ending the same way. Either the player has to have enough energy stored up to one shot everything or cautiously fight every enemy. Since they will one or two shot Knack in most situations. Which made it feel even morel like a PS1 game in my eyes. Nothing wrong with small arena’s and some skill based platformer but everything around it just feels rather bland. Something about playing so-so games interested me but even I think this isn’t one worth checking out. When the sequel pretty much does everything better.

  • They upgraded it to a worthy PS2 sequel. Knack really has all the tools of a modern game now. More than one attack, a skill tree and the ability of parry attacks makes it much easier to deal with anything. The game also looks a bit nicer too visually since the first game looks rather ruff looking compared to it. Story hasn’t changed much but it does feel paced much better even if it’s Dreamworks quality at best. Really I think this is a solid overall good game now. The only addition that didn’t really add anything other than some flashy set piece moments was QTE’s. Doesn’t take away from the fact I enjoyed playing though this game a lot more than the first.

  • This is a little platformer with a focus on collecting everything. That may sound bad but everything is easily reachable. Sure what you're required to do get harder. Yet it never feels overwhelming and Rex controls perfectly. Never felt like I was fighting the controls at all. If you like platformers I believe you will enjoy this game unless the 8 bit aesthetic isn’t up your alley.
