Start with the obvious - check to make sure the internal components are dust free and check your temps with hardware monitor. If everything is in order there, check for an updated video card driver.

That's a killer system for games. GTX 770 should be good for at least three years if you want to play at 1080p. If you're planning on 1440p, might consider bumping up to the 780, but that would bust your budget.

As far as the case, anything with a good rating from a reputable company will work fine. I chose the Fractal Design Define R4 last time around and I've been very happy with it, though I caught it on sale for $75.

It only took a GTX 760 and Bioshock Infite, but I don't think I can go back. I am seriously considering canceling my Xbox One to upgrade my case and a few other components. I was blown away at the size of the GPU when it arrived yesterday! BARELY fits in the case I have but, thank god it does because I've never seen a game look so amazing. I am going to go broke buying games I've already played just to see the difference. This is like playing in a whole other universe! Can't believe I've been missing out on so much for so long.

Yep. Welcome to the club. Check out Borderlands 2 with SweetFX:

If you aren't familiar with it, SweetFX is a visual filter you can drop into just about any game to modify color, brightness, lighting, sharpness, AA, etc. All you have to do is copy a 2MB folder into the directory where the .exe of the game is stored, then edit the SweetFX.config file with the settings you want to use. Here is the SweetFX config database - lots of games and multiple configurations per game.

Dishonored was another one that blew me away with SweetFX turned on. I wound up reusing that config for Diablo 3 as well.

Too bad a Playstation 4 is more powerful than your entire computer at a fraction of the price. Same price as that video card you would get an entire gaming system with more GDDR5 RAM on board than any discrete graphics card in existence.

You are sorely uninformed. The GTX 770 will out preform the PS4 for years to come.

"It" is the operative word there - what do you mean by "it"? If you mean, is it worth it to OC from the beginning, then no it probably isn't. These days, games tend to rely heavily on the video card. The CPU and RAM are rarely bottlenecks in performance. Keeping your CPU cool is much more important for performance than over clocking. Download something like Open Hardware Monitor and keep track of your temps. Google to find out what the normal idle temps and temp range are for your CPU. If your's is running hot, work to get it cooler.

With that said, if you want to extend the useful lifespan of your CPU, overclocking down the line can help you squeeze a few more months or maybe a year out of an aging CPU before it's time to upgrade. Then you just need to ask if spending the extra $5-$10 on an unlocked processor, and maybe $20 on a cheap air cooler is worth it to extend that life. You'll never know for sure how game engines will develop, so it's all a gamble.

In general, money spent on overclocking should probably be the last thing you worry about. Focus on buying a quality CPU and cooling it well, then put as much of your budget as you can into buying the best video card you can afford. That will do more to improve game performance than overclocking a CPU, but going with a cheaper, less powerful video card.

@act26: Don't get the H87 with the 4670k, the H87 doesn't allow for CPU overclocking so the 4670 K wouldn't be worth it, you could downgrade the CPU to a 4670 and save 20$ or move up your Motherboard to a Z87 to allow for overclock. As others above have said use a WD Black, Reds are mainly network based.

I would also look for the GTX 760 instead of 660, a generation ahead for a very similar price.

Good luck and ask away if that wasn't enough!

PS. For the SSD I'd go for a Corsair or Samsung but that might only be me :P

Just backing up what has already been said. Get the locked version of that CPU to save money, or bump up the mobo to a Z87 if you want to overclock. Also go for the GTX 760.

Might want to take a close look at the Tahiti edition of the 7870 if you're going the ATI route:

PowerColor PCS+ AX7870 2GBD5-2DHPPV3E Radeon HD 7870 MYST. Edition (Tahiti LE) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card (UEFI Ready)

I would go with a cheaper Z77 board if this is just for gaming, and if you don't need the bells and whistles like Thunderbolt. Get closer to $100 - $120 on the motherboard and buy a 7950 or GTX 760 instead. A really pretty motherboard in a gaming PC is not going to give you more frames per second - a bigger video card will.

I just built a new machine with the ASRock Z77 Extreme 3 and the 3570K - works great.

Is it weird that I keep thinking and hoping this is some sick joke? I posted this before but this hasn't sunk in yet because this is too surreal. Ryan has been one of the few constant voices in my ears and my brain simply can't register that he's gone. I don't know how to feel now and I have a suspicion that whatever triggers me finally realizing he's gone forever I will break down.

No, I keep having this shocked feeling when I think about it. I woke up from a nap this afternoon honestly believing I had dreamed the whole thing and the podcast would be up tonight with him hosting. When I swam out of sleep enough to remember this was real, it was like the entire world was wrong.

This still doesn't feel real.

I'm so heartbroken by this,

I've had distant relatives die before, and I thought maybe I'm broken because I would never feel... anything.

But when I heard about Ryan's death, a man that has made me laugh out loud constantly, for hours, every week for the past two years. A man I admire so much, and that you can feel something is not right when he's missing...

It was too much, I spent all morning sobbing uncontrollably. That's what "loss" feels like, I guess. Won't hear those words "hey everyone it's tuesday", ever again. :(

RIP duder, changed my life, and attitude towards games. I will never forget.

I was finally going to come and add my name to the pile, but you said just about everything I was going to say, so: +1. I miss him.

My heart goes out to Anna, his family, the GB crew and all his friends - online and off. I am not a praying man, but today I pray that GB can pick up the pieces and find joy in the work again. We need more of the gang ASAP.
