Best of 2013

Same as last year I've not limited myself to games released this year but have included every game I played for the first time this year.

Of the official GiantBomb list that are not present here I've not played enough of the Last of Us to include it (though what I did play was brilliant) and I want to play more of Divekick, Rogue Legacy and Papers' please though did play enough for them to be considered. Finally Brothers has just been bought off steam so if I play it in the next few days this list may change!

List items

  • Wow! Not Dark Souls! Even I was surprised! When watching last years GOTY awards I couldn't understand why this was winning so many - adventure games! bah! Then I played it....

The characters draw you in make the world believable and the choices feel like you are making a difference - episode 2 literally had me shouting at Kenny! Can't wait to get started on season 2.

  • There it is! It's rare that a game will capture me for 40+ hours, even rarer that I will spend the rest of my time thinking about it watching videos online and reading about the lore and backstory. I had to stop myself playing new game plus and getting sucked back in though can't wait for the sequel which I fully expect to be writing about this time next year!

  • Another big game of the year from last year, I picked it up early this year and was blown away. The stealth mechanics are perfect and it makes you want to do every section of the game perfectly without being seen. Brilliant!

  • I've not even attempted a Hell run yet, but this one keeps drawing me back in for the daily challenges and for one more run.

  • Just finished this on the Vita, took me by surprise as I don't remember too many people raving about it when it came out. Really loved the art style and the metroidvania gameplay.

  • Perfect game to play in your lunch time break, my love of burning things got me started. The story kept me there and saw me through the the surprising finale.

  • Many an evening lost to this one with the wife, really loved the tracks and the cars - boats and planes where a bit meh. But lots of variety and captured what I loved about the older mario kart games.

  • Part of me feels this should be higher! But couldn't displace any of the games above. Loved the visuals and the way the multiplayer worked also felt like a game where anything superfluous had been removed creating a really high quality experience throughout.

  • Captured my golden generation of the SNES perfectly, challenging and fun - a game more people should play.

  • Didn't quite live up to the hype but some of the combat sequences were brilliant and the story kept me guessing until the end.
