100 Good Games

I suspect many users of this site, like myself, have played approximately a million-zillion games in their time. So here's 100 good games I've played, in alphabetical order (hopefully). If you haven't played all of them, maybe you should consider picking one of these up!

Only 2010 releases and prior! Also in very iterative games (Super Mario Galaxy 1 vs 2, for example) I tried to only pick the one that I think is better so I could fit more stuff on the list. Someday I'll finish writing the descriptions...

1. Axelay

This is a really cool shooter - unfortunately, like most SNES shooters, it suffers from some slowdown. Awesome music!
2. Battlefield: Bad Company

Great shooting and sound design, backed up by fun writing and sound design.
3. Bayonetta

Totally balls to the wall crazy. I was practically climaxing from sheer intense joy during the ending(s).
4. Borderlands

Never quite made it through playthrough 2, but damn if I don't love the loot game. Come on, just one more shiny new gun...
5. Castlevania: Rondo of Blood

This is the best of the old-style Castlevanias as far as I'm concerned. Which is weird because I think it's also the last? Way to go out on a high note, guys.
6. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Surprise, the original "Vania" part of the "Metroidvania" portmanteau is my favorite. The other six are just imitators.
7. Cave Story

This is my favorite indie freeware style game ever. I happily bought it when it came out on WiiWare, although that version had a few problems (which may have been fixed? I should check). If Pixel makes any other games, I'll be there.
8. Chrono Trigger

This game never clicked with me the same way it did with others, but it's still a really good game and deserves to be on anyone's 100 greats list.
9. Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun

My favorite RTS. Although I am no expert, I just play the story and skirmish. Full support for fancy new resolutions, too. Lots of time wasted back in the day.
10. Sid Meier's Civilization V
11. Crysis
12. EarthBound

I didn't play this game until probably 2003 (sadly), and it quickly became apparent that I had made a mistake in my youth by ignoring this kiddie-looking game. People like to go about hitting hippies with baseball bats, but that kind of description sells this game short to a large degree. Nobody ever mentions the earnest nostalgia that the author put into this game.
13. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I have played more of this game than probably any game released since. Millions of megs of mods!
14. F-Zero GX

GO FAST is all I have to say.

18. Final Fantasy VI

Played this a whole bunch of times over the years (10+? Arhgh). At this point, I prefer the GBA version for the better translation, portability, and added features. The new dungeon is actually pretty cool.
19. Final Fantasy VIII

I have to concede at this point that this is probably my favorite Final Fantasy game. Although at this point in my life I have little tolerance for JRPGs, this game still draws (har har) me in just as much as it did in 1999. I love the sense of introspection and mystery.
20. Final Fantasy Tactics

I practically have everything about this game memorized, even the variables that go into a lot of the battle damage formulas. I even got about halfway done with a mod for the PS1 version. Maybe I'll finish it sometime (I won't).

22. God Hand

Don't act like you don't like a ball buster.

I'm not really a huge racing guy but man I love this game. I probably should play Forza or something, huh?
26. Gunstar Heroes
27. Half-Life 2

I'm just going to consider HL2 and all its episodes as being the same product even though at least Episode 2 is probably the best of all of them.
28. Illusion of Gaia

I was really obsessed with this game as a kid. Even then I guess I was super into history and stuff, and this game sort of fed into that. It's a cool game still.
29. Half-Minute Hero
30. The King of Fighters 2000

This is the first fighting game I ever got anywhere near competent at. My best character was Vanessa, followed by K' and Shingo. SHINGO KIIIICKUU~
31. Katamari Damacy

This is one of the few sort of obscure weird games that I managed to get in on ground floor. I got it on release day and everything, although it was really hard to preorder, the GameStop guy had no idea what I was trying to ask for. I really find these games very relaxing and fun. It is maybe the only kind of gameplay that isn't Tetris that I feel like I could theoretically play forever.

33. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

This isn't the first Zelda game I played, either. But it is the one I have played like ten times through. Also it was my second Super NES game.

I love it, stupid long cutscenes and all. So, so crazy.

There are so many options for how to play this. My default way to go is basically to turn into the Predator and hide in bushes or sneak up and knife guys.

I played this through twice in Japanese. First ever import game! Great story, characters, art, music, gameplay, etc. Great fan translation, too. Definitely one of my very favorite games ever.

Even though this game seems to run at about 15fps, I will jump back into that world any time. This game offers an experience unlike any other game in the commercial space.
65. Shatterhand

I think this game is completely awesome and a lot of fun.
66. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES
67. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
68. Shining Force CD

I believe this is a combination of Shining Force Gaiden 1 and 2 into a single awesome package. I don't own this game for reals, but I played a ton of the Game Gear games way back. Man the Game Gear sucked. This is the only Game Gear related thing that will be on this list.

70. SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighter's Clash - SNK & Capcom Version

I'm the only person I know who owned a Neo Geo Pocket Color. This game was still fun.

This is the first video game that wasn't like a Tiger Electronics crappy handheld thing that I ever owned. I have probably cleared all 96 exits many times over the years.

Specifically the NES/GB versions are my favorite. I don't like the block spinning infinite thing from the newer Tetris variants - I like the chunkiness of the older versions.

99. Unreal Tournament

Many hours wasted fragging friends on Morpheus and Facing Worlds. Goddamnit this game ruled. Spent some time with UT2004 as well, but I like the original more. Wish they'd make a Quake Live-style UT game.
100. We Love Katamari

I definitely love this game, actually prefer it to the original. The levels are better constructed, there are a few more twists on Katamary-ing that are actually fun (fuck you bear/cow levels).
