Wow, Hades won by so much. Wonder what the biggest lead has been for a game in previous years, because that is almost double second place.

I clicked through to some of the other years out of curiosity and I think this might be the biggest margin of victory ever!

Glad to see Doom Eternal getting some love. The sheer amount of options you have in Eternal is absolutely wild, and going from being at 1 health and on the run to being fully stocked up on health, ammo, and armour and stomping your way through the rest of a battle is a feeling that almost no other actions game has given me. The one thing that I think would have helped people with the game is if it signposted how many weapons were good at taking out weak points, or that weakpoints were not particularly necessary after all. It goes so hard in the first few levels on the weakpoint stuff, but it is more of a tactical consideration as opposed to a requirement.

Yeah, honestly, the only ones that still trip me up a lot are the energy shield dudes that basically require a plasma rifle to pop. They are SUPER ANNOYING since they can pop those shields without line of sight but apart from that I mostly used whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it and it was fine!

I really need a 3080 though. I was getting dips into the 50s of FPS in the exterior portions of the first level in The Ancient Gods. Unacceptable!

@aiomon: It honestly won me over pretty quick. If you have access to Uplay+ I'd say it's worth the 15 bucks to give it a whirl for a month!

The politicking at the end of Stormblood is one of my favorite parts of that whole expansion.

I have definitely made some people angry in the GB clan for being bored at that bit of it. I wouldn't have minded it so much had there been some kind of dungeon or raid excursion in there somewhere. It was just cutscene after cutscene after cutscene for hours by my recollection.

@royalghost: @denisxcore: @candlejakk:I don't think the goal there is really to "beat" him but just avoid him and get to a door? That's all I've done, anyway!

Thanks for the well-wishes!

Agree about FF14, I thoroughly enjoyed my time this year treating ARR as a single player chill walking sim, but bounced off at the end because of the terrible linking between it and the first expansion.

It still managed to crack my top 5 this year though, great experience and cant complain about getting 120 odd hours of pure chill joy from a game this year.

Yeah I feel bad for hitting a wall with it, but the pacing in that game is allllll over the place.

I don't even particularly like Spelunky and I'll agree 100%, character of the year.

Good list! Townscaper is really neat and I'd love to tinker with it more. I hit a lot of issues with bugs in Valhalla that soured my first impressions up through the end of the Christmas event, but the new patch has mostly stabilized things. Still getting an occasional desktop crash and the controls will go fuzzy from time to time, but at least all the enemies aren't stuck at level 90 and I'm not coming into the world drunk all the time.

Regarding Sanderson, I liked his work on the tail end of the Wheel of Time series. He was absolutely the right guy for that. I wish I liked his other work more, but unfortunately I bounced off hard from Mistborn for its deus ex machina and Stormlight for being wordy for the sake of being wordy. I used to like that but anymore I like shorter fantasy fiction.

I've had a couple of Martha Wells books on my Kindle for freaking ever. Need to jump on that at some point.

All Systems Red is a great little novella that I recommend if you want to give her sci-fi stuff a shot. I think she's mostly fantasy but hit gold with the Murderbot series and her publishers seem like they want her to keep on cranking out stuff in that universe, and they've been getting less inspired over time, but the first book is still pretty great!

Will there be video, or does that just take longer to upload?

Some of this stuff bothers me as it messes with my head canon of GB: For example, Spelunky not being on 2012 list but in my mind it might as well be their GOTY in how much they've gushed about it and made videos around it post-release.

I think Spelunky just took a long time to burn in for a lot of people, myself included. I really thought it was way too hard when I started playing it - it really took me a solid year of off-and-on playing before it clicked!

@aistan: it was on my list! Some say it might have even been the top entry...
