Man, finding this video of the mailbag I sent years and years ago is so bittersweet. I sure do miss that time of my life, and I miss the Giantbomb squad of 2012, but time goes on and everyone has to change.
I'm particularly fascinated by how PUBG, an unfinished jankfest of the highest magnitude, got GOTY over every other better game. I do wonder, maybe the GB crew was just waxing nostalgic to the fun they were having as a group, despite the fact that the game isn't that good? It is also interesting to see so many other people overlook all of its failings and shortcomings, when normally a game like that would be so niche it's silly.
I mean, really? Playerunknown's Battlegrounds? That shoddy thing? It's a poorly made arena shooter with some open world moments, how the heck did that get best game? When a car hits something, it will rocket to the moon, and I don't think that's a feature. I mean, I know it's an agglomerate vote, but this just flies in the face of every game that was actually crafted by dedicated artists this year. Jesus Christ, what do people see in that game?
In a year rife with excellent story-driven games, they gave best new character to the current Assassin's Creed protagonist? What topsy turvy land is this? Any of the new Persona, Zelda, Nier, Yakuza, Destiny, Resident Evil, Tekken, Wolfenstein, Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, Divinity: Original Sin 2, characters to choose from, among many, many others, and they went with the "oh no my son died time for revenge" guy? I'm really going to have to listen to their deliberations in order to try to make sense of this mad, mad decision.
Yeah, Sims 4 seems nice now, but I don't know, it just has so much less than either the Sims 2 or 3. The basic system just doesn't do anything for me, and that's coming from a long-time fan.
