My Worst Moment

Ladies and gentlemen, during tonight's Lantern Run, I made a terrible mistake with my language, one that I immediately recognized as hurtful, embarrassing, and just categorically inappropriate both personally and professionally. Giant Bomb has certainly been known to "work blue", but that kind of language simply has no place on Giant Bomb--and, frankly, in the world at large--not now, not ever. I was shocked myself when it came tumbling out, and instantly felt like the worst piece of shit in the world. Context is meaningless, because that word comes with too much of its own hurtful baggage to ever possibly justify.

I want to be crystal clear here: I'm saying this not because of some corporate mandate or some fear for my job. I'm saying this because it's important to me personally that I acknowledge the significance of what was said, and to own it. I feel miserable because that's not me, and it's horrifying to me to think that someone would take that awful outburst as some sort of implicit approval to use that word. That shit is just indefensible. As such, the archived version of the Final Lantern Run will be edited, though I wanted to make sure that this message got out there first, and that people know that this isn't a cover-up.

All I can ask for now is forgiveness for my gaffe. If you can't manage that, I understand, and hope that you can at least give me a chance to prove that I am better than what you saw of me in that deeply regrettable moment of frustration.

I've been listening/watching long enough that I know what your feelings about that stuff really is. As hard as you might try, some of that stuff gets in there deep enough that it can be almost impossible to remove it completely, especially when you're reacting from the gut. You got out in front and owned it, I'm sure it will be fine. Thanks for making the edit.

You recognised immediately that you'd said something offensive and you immediately apologised for it. While not excusable to say that word, it shows that you're a decent person in how you handled it.

A hateful, weighty word for sure, but it's not like Ryan directed it at a homosexual male so let's cheer up a bit. In some contexts, I don't even think the most conservative of mothers could be offended, such as this:

Really funny. but I guess those contexts are few and far between. Ha! Ha! I guess in most contexts, it's either really hateful or makes the user look like a giant dick. Ryan was really quick to apologize though.

Nice statement Ryan, in such a frustrating moment it is easy for silly things to fall out of the mouth but it takes a real gentleman to both realise his mistake instantly and apologise and then put something in writing, so many people would not bother with either.

Wow, I can't believe this all over a dumb word that just sounds retarded when anyone uses it. Do people really get offended when someone calls them that? :/

As a homosexual, I would get much more than offended if someone called me that word, I would be upset too. The word has been used, and is still used in many parts of the world, to dehumanize millions of people, to make people think of them as just "worthless faggots". Many people still have to hide a part of themselves because of fear of consequences. There are tens of countries in the world where I can't go even if I wanted to, because there are laws against people like myself existing in their society. In the country where I live I would've been put to mental asylum if I was born just 30 years earlier than I did. I would hope that people thought of what meaning a word carries before saying "It's just a word".

I can understand that people Ryan's age group might utter the word in frustration, it does not make it okay, but I can see that he did not mean to say it and immediately apologized. I have not lost any respect for him since he has dealt with this in a very polite and professional manner.

Funny, I remember calling people and being called fag(got) (usually preceded with "your a fucking") all the time when I was a kid. It is hurtful in the context that you're saying it to a straight person the same as if you called them gay, queer or homosexual. Your implying they liked to have sex with men (assuming your talking to a dude, which you probably were) when they don't . In no way was it ever meant to hurt actual homosexuals nor was it ever directed towards them. It's like saying they like to eat their boogers. They probably don't and would take offense to it, which is the point.

Would "RAPE THAT FUCKING WHORE" have been a better choice of words because, apparently, that's far more acceptable.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: Big f'ing deal. Moving on.

This probably justifies Rich Gallups old view of refraining from overtly offensive language on broadcasts so that as such regrettable actions don't come back to bite you in the ass. I'm pleased as a gay member of the site and also a fan of your content for nearly a decade (gamespot, arrow pointing down etc.) that you've taken the initiative to put your hands up to classify this an error Ryan.

As for your personal viewpoint, having witnessed your tongue in cheek joviality with Matt Rorie and previous working relationships with staff members such as Kevin VanOrd, that if you were deep down some closet queer bashing homophobe that San Fran would probably be the equivalent of subjecting yourself to hell and promptly relocate yourself to Uganda or Jamaica.

I hope if anything this helps cement that Giant Bomb can be an entertaining gaming website and community for a more mature audience without resorting to crude language to draw attention like many of its contemporaries.

While I respect your views, I would like to just say words are words, people shouldn't get offended by them, but more so the intent of the person saying them. I have never used the word faggot, but that's purely on the basis I think the word sounds stupid, and to me it's predominately Americans who use it. These areas you speak of where homosexuals aren't welcome, they wouldn't be calling you a faggot.

So with the assumption it's an American term, if someone is going to use it in a hurtful way, I can guarantee you that they are in the minority. No one cares about homosexuality anymore, and those who do, are in the older generation and with them gone, so will most of homophobia.

Time to live & learn Ryan, just don't let it happen again or the gaming gods will create another bad Duke Nukem Forever game & you'll have to review it and quick look it. That alone should be enough motivation to be more controlled with what you say.

There are certain words and topics that people don't talk about in front of children, because it's considered inappropriate. Would you say those are just words? The n-word is one that I wouldn't imagine anyone who isn't either a 4chan troll or a kid on XBox Live to say, and the only reason people use that word is to cause a reaction from people. These aren't "just words", they have a meaning and can have consequences if they are accepted as a social norm, no matter the original intent. Young people are currently killing themselves in the US because of the use of the word faggot, it might be the one last thing on top of everything else that puts them over the edge. By the way, there are in fact many countries in Africa where English is an official language and the word faggot is used, people are sentenced to long periods in prison or given death sentence, or just killed by homophobes who take the law into their own hands. If they do not speak English they have their own derogatory terms for gay people, like the word "hintti" here in Finland.

You say that no one cares about homosexuality any more, but people do obviously do, since it still causes so much discussion in the United States and around the world on a political level. I do hope that homophobia will eventually disappear, but I don't believe things will get better unless people stay vigilant and act to change these social norms that have serious negative impact.

I think Ryan's own strong reaction to what he did shows that for him on personal level it was very wrong thing to do. I do feel that him apologizing for what he did is a sincere reaction. I have never seen Ryan show any signs of homophobia, instead he seems to be very comfortable with his own sexuality and with the gay people.

@ZeForgotten: Are you referring to me?

@Kyodra: While it may be a big discussion in the United States, it's mainly because of the legality of gay marriage, or the likes. Which just always boils down to everyone - who's sensible - rolling their eyes and wondering why it's such a big deal. When states allow gay marriage, they will overwhelmingly congratulated.

In some areas of the US things are so, however different states have widely different laws and attitudes regarding homosexuality. What's considered sensible, beneficial and progressive by a majority in one state is considered a terrible sin in another. It's sometimes easy to lose perspective when living in a more tolerant area of the world.

Here it comes guys. This is it. The end of Giant Bomb. We all thought the CBSi move meant nothing. And then videos I play $50 for started getting edited. This is insane. I can't believe the hypocrisy here. We all tapdance around this word, saying idiotic stuff like "the other f-word" or "word for British cigarette." Ryan apologized for anyone who got offended, but really, isn't that more than enough? Does any seriously believe Ryan Davis is a homophobe?

Ryan says "goddamnit" in just about every video. Let's say I'm a Christian. Does that mean I get my way and every instance of "goddamnit" get's taken out? Or let's say someone I know died in 9/11. Does that mean I can get the entire 4chan website taken down because I was offended by a 9/11 thread? No. You getting offended means nothing. You don't get your way because you were stupid enough to get bothered by something someone you don't know and who probably isn't even in the same state or country of you said. These examples take a huge step and assume anyone was even offended. This is Ryan Davis. He's a silly fat guy on the internet. If you are gay and personally called you a faggot on the street, then you have some grounds for offense. But it's the internet. Have a tough skin or get the hell out.

I think anyone watching would know that it was said in the heat of the moment and directed at no one, much as any game-triggered expletive might be. It's definitely not an acceptable word to say, but hey... shit happens. Ryan Davis is still one of the classiest motherfuckers out there, as his willingness to own up to a mistake demonstrates.
