The debate of buying starcraft 2...with myself.

A week from the launch of SC2...and I still can't decide.
A week from launch...but don't know if I want to buy.
A week from launch...AHHH forget it.
Starcraft is a game that has filled up the majority of my pc gaming teen years but now 12 years later the sequel is coming and I can't decide if I want to get something so highly anticipated. I loved SC and SC:BW but this newest iteration has me on the fence.
Why you might be wondering? Well couple of reasons I will declare which are good and bad then some are more like the wait and see type since we know more patches will come after launch when the public starts getting its hands on it.
My first reason is 12 years later and all we get is the TERRAN CAMPAIGN?! 60 bucks of my hard earned money, because I'm no middle class American by far. I would of wanted the other 2 factions as well to complete the story 12 years later but for them to cut it off with the Terrans for now, and give us the other sides of the grand story later in expansions doesn't make me pleased.
Next up on the list is the new units...some are good they shore up early SC1 faction weaknesses that even brood war didn't fix. Beta testing for this game has been awesome but it's also given me the time to see things that were awesome early on get thrown out due to imbalances instead of worked in somehow.
Real ID has been a controversy and as of now in the beta it's still there but it's not working in the form they originally wanted...yet. If you give out your email people get to see your name but for now in beta you can just add their aliases, from score screens and it says you can do it from profile pages but I haven't been able to figure that one out. I would spend more time on this and say all I want to say but it's been debated to death in my opinion and I can summarize my wanting Real ID and my real name going out there in one word, No.
Starcraft 2 is a game I really want to own come July 27th but the mess of it all has me in observer mode rather than impulsive purchase mode.

My argument is short and simple.  When was last time Blizzard made a game that wasn't amazing?

@ShadowofIntent: I don't really like any Blizzard games that much.  I never played the orignal Starcraft, but all the others I've played have been pretty meh too me.  I don't really like the fantasy shit like Warcraft other than LOTR.  That's pry why i couldn't get into Dragon Age either.

So, you don't like fantasy games, admit you can't get into fantasy games, haven't played the blizzard game that ISN'T a fantasy game, and then use that to imply blizzard doesn't make good games?

I dunno man, I couldn't give two shits about sports games but I can probably determine a well done one from a poorly done one.

The OP is in a different situation though, he has played and liked the original SC. And I think we can all agree that although not all of Blizzard's games are for everyone (I don't like WOW either, hell, I cant stand more than five minutes of it), blizzard DOES create games of great quality. I just watched a video on Husky's YT channel of a map for sc2 that allows you to play from a first-person perspective of a marine. That alone has my interest peaked. Oh and I've been in the beta for quite some time and have already invested plenty of hours in it, so that means atleast the game has some longevity to it.

Parts of Warcraft 3, "RPG elements" lets say, were fucking awful. The Frozen Throne "bonus" game is literally the most tedious experience I've ever had in any video game. And WoW is a built on the foundation of that. So Blizzard makes shit sometimes. And they've never written a good story or even a coherent one. They write nonesensical plots anchored by unique looking and therefore "strong" characters. But Warcraft 3, the main game, was pretty fun and Starcraft 2, in the beta, is fun. And playing through the nonesensical campaign will probably be fun.

I'm probably going to like Starcraft, but most Blizzard games are fantasy games.

Okay I would like to support the notion that Blizzard continually makes quality games. They may not be for everyone but they are all in their own right good. For example I never really played WoW but I can respect what it has done for the MMO genre and how many subscribers it continues to have.

In conclusion, especially if you bought Starcraft and enjoyed it a lot. I'm not sure why you wouldn't get SC2, at the very least in a few months when you could find some cheaper deals on it. The short time i've spent with the Beta has really sold the game completely to me.

Well, I've never played Starcraft, I just didn't play PC games when it came out, no one in my family had a PC that could handle it, anyway.  But I was like 10 years old, I'm 20 now, I've got a PC that'll run it great, I'm playing WoW almost every day (again) and can't wait to try this game out.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. Also, I feel that Blizzard has changed... for the worse. I'm certain that SC2 is a great game, but the fact that Blizzard is now owned by Activision and some of the crap they've collectively pulled over the past year or two has me conflicted.

Meh at this point I don't mind being a fool then, 60 bucks is too much for me right now for what is being offered. Starcraft 2 will be successful no doubt, It's international popularity withstanding. 12 years is too long and past my prime for me to care anymore with what goes on with this franchise. If anything I can wait a couple more years for the complete game, already waited 12.

Dude...what about the UMS?  I shit you not, I put more time in UMS than I did in real matches during the second phase of the beta.  I clocked over 20 games a day with UMS...plus you got a story and the FULL Galaxy Editor unlocked for retail, so the UMS will be so damn polished.

@Sacerdos87: Imagine you and millions of other people are at a train station where all the trains go to a heaven where it's all orgasms and happiness.
You are debating whether or not to board the first train.
If you board the train, you go to the previously mentioned place.
If you do not board the train, you are left sitting at the station until you decide to board a train.
Catch my drift?!
!!?

I'm into Starcraft, of course, the problem I have is that I'm waaaay more interested in the Zerg campaign than I am in the Terran campaign. Whether I buy this Starcraft II depends an awful lot on whether or not it'll be required if I want to play the Zerg campaign later.

I think they still haven't given a definitive answer on that, incidentally.

You know if they confirmed the online is 100% the same throughout all stories or will we need to buy each one for units?  All I remember them confirming is that each game is a standalone and you won't need A to play B, etc.

@KaosAngel:
I remember them early on going out of their way to reassure their fans that all three races will be available in multiplayer when you buy the first third of the game, because the Zerg and Protoss campaigns will be quite a while in coming, so it would be pretty unreasonable to make Zerg and Protoss players wait that long for the chance to play them online. I'm glad to hear that I'll be able to play Heart of the Swarm by itself, though, especially since my brother is planning on getting Wings of Liberty for himself.

My feelings are similarly conflicted.  On one hand, I do want to play the game, even if I don't think Blizzard is what it used to be.  I liked StarCraft well enough that it would be quite difficult to screw up a sequel, and from what little I've seen of it I can say the game has potential.  Having a full length campaign sounds great, even if it does just focus on one faction.

On the other hand, I'm not very keen on buying just a single faction's campaign.  I like the Zerg, and although I do intend to play the Terran and Protoss campaigns when I get around to playing, I don't find the terrans alone compelling enough to want to play.  However, when the Zerg campaign comes out, I don't want to play that story if I've missed important events that happen in Wings of Liberty.  I don't want to pay full price for the Zerg campaign when it comes out if I haven't played Wings of Liberty, and I don't want to pay the cost of two games to play both campaigns either.  I'll probably wait until there's some kind of package deal that fits onto my budget, even as I spend more money on other games that mean less to me just because the cost is easier to swallow in the increments I can swing at the time (to say nothing of the fact that I get a fair number of games as gifts from people who are looking for something in the $10-$20 range to get for me).

In short, I'll probably play this game at some point, but it will likely come after the Zerg and/or Protoss campaigns come out, when I can find a special that reduces the cost or I find a proper job so that a game like this doesn't break my bank account or make bills go unpaid.

Well all this feedback is amazing, nice to see how people feel on the situation but...I caved. The morning of release I went to my nearby best buy and bought the collector's edition, needless to say I am happy with the game despite my previous blog of me being on the fence. The reason I gave in is simply because I've waited too long, and really all my memories of starcraft are online matches, so a simple 26 mission campaign for the Terrans, while extremely well done, doesn't bother me in the slightest really that the other factions aren't there. We can only play the campaigns for so long anyhow. Being a beta tester for so long did pay off, allowed me to do fairly well in my league and division so far with the Terrans 1v1. 2v2 is also fun and crazy, so probably will be nuts when I decide to do a 3v3 or 4v4. All this aside, as long as blizzard maintains it's consistency with customer support and patches I don't think this was a bad purchase at all. Sorry to dissappoint if I seemed like the guy who would go against the current.
