Best games of 2018

A weird year. Many good games, but none stand out as THE game, like in 2017. Well, except Red Dead Redemption 2. Fuck you, Rockstar, for not releasing on PC.

List items

  • Hard to pick a favorite this year. I think I end up with Pillars 2, a game I spent countless hours in. I think I prefer the original.

  • Such a great game. I'm too bad at it to ever finish it, but I loved every minute of what I played. Another reason I like it is that I recommended it to a colleague, and it went on to become one of his favorite games of all time. He still tells me stories of his time with the game, and that brings it high up on my list.

  • Many hours of fun, both alone and in coop. You know what you get when you buy a Farcry game, nothing more, nothing less. And I rule in helicopters.

  • I hate jRPGs. I always have. But this one hooked me. I was piqued by the style, so I downloaded the demo. When the time was up in that, I bought immediately, even though I was broke. Even set up a South African eShop account just to get it as cheap as possible.

I fell of it when my vacation was over and reality set in, but I had a great time with it.

  • I'm not a sucker for roguelikes, but this had a tight gameplay loop that I liked. Great style, fun weapons.

  • A year later this has become the best selling fighting game of all time, and that is no wonder. Tons of characters and a fun story mode, I played this for hours with my kids.

  • This got rave reviews, so I downloaded it. I got trashed, and I put it down for months. Then I picked it up again, learned the basics, and had great fun playing through it.

  • I'm one of the few people in the world who still thinks the original Assassin's Creed is the best one. Yes, it was slow and methodical, but I would think that is part of the job when you are an assassin. You don't just run around and stab people, which is what you do in all the sequels.

The world in Odyssey is great, though, and I like being there. And I like the woman you play as. And stabbing people is always fun.

  • Sigh... I guess I had fun for several hours. It's janky, ugly and boring, but sometimes that combines for some pure magic. Like when I was playing with one of my brothers, and we were exploring the golf club. For some reason, one of the robots gets hostile towards me, and only me. I run around the whole area with murderous robots on my heels, with my brother running beside us laughing. The hallways filled up with dead robots, but they kept spawning. Until I ran out of stimpaks.

I miss you, Fallout of ten years ago.

  • This had so much potential! But instead, it was empty and boring. Great technology, though, that water was spectacular.
