Redline, it's whithout a doubt the smartest and most mature Anime movie ever made... well, not really but if you want to check out something that it's just incredibly fun and gorgeous to look at it's worth checking out
Just off the top of mi head i can think of must read stuff like The Sandman (no, not the spiderman villain) written by Neil Gaiman , Watchmen, Y the last man, Preacher (not for you if you are sensitive about religion), Lucifer and Alan moore's run on swamp thing. For more mainstream superhero related stuff i'd recomend the Kingdom Come, The Killing Joke, Superman: Red Son (what if story about superman as a communist), most of Geoff Johns run on Green lantern and All Star Superman. The good thing about these stories are that you dont need to worry about continuity.
Childhood i seen nowadays as a time of innocence and therefore must be protected from things that can "ruin" or endanger that innocence and not just violence, that's why cursing or talking about sex in front of children is considered taboo. If you go back and read almost any old fairy tale or children's story really fucked up thing used to happen to children, like little red riding hood (wich is probably more of a warning against sexual predators than actual predators), the pied piper and the boy who cried wolf. I think this change came with romanticism and the emphasis it gave to things like love, innocence and other emotions over more rational stuff but I may be wrong. That's why today Little red riding hood is saved by the lumberjack insted of being eaten by the wolf.
Sorry if my english isn't very good, i'm not used to writing it that often.
Do you like sick summons? I havenĀ“t played golden sun since I was 11 in 2002 but as a kid invoking world ending destruction just to get rid of a vermin was the best thing about the game for me. (they probably look like shit now but i don't want to ruin my memories by looking at a video of them). The game also finds neat ways to use the psyenergy outside of the battles in the form of puzzles.
I think it all depends on how you feel about the classic urn based jrpg formula because if you don't like it it's not gonna change your mind.
