Top 10 Games of 2017

  • Odyssey might be the most well-made video game I have ever played - and if I narrow the field to exclude picross games and the like, "might be" gets pretty damn close to "is." While I disliked the level design in a few spots, and a couple of the kingdoms feel half-baked (e.g. the Snow Kingdom), these things are so easily ignored in the midst of such a huge world. What's most impressive to me is that almost everything in this huge world is made with the utmost care and craft. Character and detail are infused into the tiniest components, things that even the best developers tend to ignore. This crazy level of detail trained me to expect secrets in every corner, and I wasn't often disappointed. In fact, Odyssey might be mislabeled as a platformer - its gameplay is founded just as much on exploration as on platforming, and the new capture mechanic is more often used to test your creative thinking, not your reflexes. I might never get all the Power Moons because the 100-jump and 100-volley challenges are soulless chores, somehow equally boring and nerve-wracking, but these only bear mentioning because they're flaws. Super Mario Odyssey has incredibly few of those.
