I'm going with the obvious pick this year, but Red Dead Redemption really resonated with me in a lot of ways. Hands down the best game of the year.

An improvement over Mass Effect in every conceivable way. An absolutely breathtaking, cinematic experience.

Advances the main story more than I thought it would, and provides an extremely addicting multiplayer mode.

Definitely made local multiplayer a joy for me again. One of the first games in a while that I actually felt the drive to call people up and get them together solely for the purpose of playing this.
Also, this game might be awesome if you are under the influence of illegal drugs.
Not that I would know anything about that.

Probably the most underrated game of the year, it does Zelda better than Zelda does Zelda nowadays.

While not nearly as creative as the first, I'm just happy to have more levels to jump into and obsess over.

Fuck the haters. This game is beautiful to look at, and is a wonderful, sprawling story. Not to mention the combat system is the best Final Fantasy has seen in years.

The two main characters are some of my favorites ever.
