Sekoku: Best of 2009

List items

  • Basically, it took everything that made the first one great and amplified that. Summer Adventure Blockbuster "movie" at it's finest. Some people may think it's overrated and I'll grant that the hype for it a bit huge.

But, for me, it was my most anticipated game of 2009. It met me expectations and the multiplayer sold me on the concept that Naughty Dog could put a functional multiplayer experience that it fun in doses out.

    #1 of the year, easily.

  • At first I was like: :|

But then I played it, completed it twice and was like: :D

Game's great. But the cult-status/following of it to where it's loved by EVERYONE is a bit bizzare. The game is pretty flawed. Esp. in PvP combat.

#2 for the following reasons: a) The game is HARD, but for the most part the deaths are YOUR fault in general. Never have I felt the game was cheap. b) The environment/scenery is pretty awesome. Medieval sword and sorcery that has a bit of a horror twist. It isn't the typical Dungeons and Dragons "this dude is evil, go into his dungeon and slay him!" plots that most RPGs follow. c) The online mode (with the exception of PvP combat) is exceptional. Players can help eachother avoid certain doom with text messages, co-op play (which is hindered by the crappy PvP), and bloodstain system.

The online environment and innovations make it #2 for me.

  • Takes everything about 3 that I liked and streamlines it into a more cinematic adventure. I like it, but after playing Persona 3 for 180 hours, most of the changes that are nice for the majority also rub me the wrong way after dealing with 3's idiosyncrasies and loving them. (Why should I control my party except when they're totally not doing what I want from them with "knock down" command?)

    #3 for being a PS2 game that I'm playing in 2009 on my PS3.

  • Took Phantasy Star Universe, removed most of the bad from it and ported it to the PSP pretty well. PSP2 takes the hugest problem with PSP1 (no online mode) and adds it in while further removing most of the bad from PSU.

#4 for being the "hack and slash" that is NOT Monster hunter (ugh) to make me play my PSP for that genre.

  • After the huge disappointment and turd that was NG2 X-box 360, Hayashi (for better and worse) ported NG2, fixed most of it's bullshit (yay, projectile spam being gone! Game's playable now!) added some bullshit (unneeded bosses) and created the definitive version of NG2.

On the list because a) I like NG1 and this is NG2 on the NG1 system, thereby making it... PLAYABLE! ZOMG b) Co-op mode is pretty fun, and online. c) Fixes the bullshit that made NG2 terrible.Thereby, making it one of the best game releases this year.

  • A little late on coming to the PS3, Peggle is just as addictive as it was on XBLA/DS/PC/WoW/wherever the hell it hasn't been ported to... yet!

Pretty fun little game. Esp. when you do the "online peg party" (hohoho, naughty!) mode where you compete with four others to get a good score and beat them.

  • One of the better releases on PSN. The aspect of the "bigger eats little" critter system makes it more than a simple puzzle game. You can speed up the popping process by feeding a small to a medium and then feeding that medium to a large to pop a large chain. Instead of the "two smalls and a medium will pop a medium" system that the game also has.

Food chain system is pretty nice as well, as linking a small to a medium below a large will cause a large to automatically eat the medium and pop.

For $5, you can't really go wrong with Critter Crunch if you're a fan of puzzle games.

  • While I may hate Orson Scott Card matched only by the heat of the sun. I have to admit that Chair (who Epic purchased smartly during the development of this game) brought a new "Metroidvania" came into the current generation pretty smartly.

The hugest issue (besides OSC) that I have with the game is the right-stick aiming-your-gun system. Otherwise it's a nice little adventure that stars Nathan Dra--wait, what? Oh, Nolan North is pulling a Drake in a MS game? Sure, I guess I'll let that slide...

  • Took 4's gameplay. Added co-op (but mandatory, lame). Characters were alright. But the story was terrible, made Wesker into a Mary Sue and overall wasn't a Biohazard game like the classic series (1-3).

But, I still liked it and the DLC coming out for it (that revisits Jill/Chris' confrontation of Wesker) makes me still have it on my radar.

Low, low entry on the list.

  • The maps are terrible, the game has barely any balance. The story in singleplayer is laughable, and the the game is basically inferior to MW1 in everyway...

But why can't I stop playing it? God, it's like Halo 2 all over again for me. (But in Halo 2's defense, I liked it well enough minus the terrible singleplayer)

#10. If only because it's multiplayer, despite all the bullshit, is still addictive like MW1's was before it.
