For those interested, CIG are holding another Free Fly Week this week starting Monday 28th. For those who already have an account, any referrals you make with your code will earn you a bonus ship reward - the P52 Merlin snub fighter.
So far the gameplay is fairly straightforward with PvP conquest akin to Planetside or Battlefield in space. However, you can easily tell the engine is ripe for much more on top of that.
The Beyond patch itself is really enjoyable ---- in single player.
Multiplayer so far has been a mess. I can't even join more than 4 friends at a time, when HG seemed to indicate you can join with 32 friends. If all of this is just a glorified meeting hub for groups of 4 friends at a time then they lied again.
Has anyone successfully joined together in a group of more than 4 players?
they never said you can form a group with up to 32 players, in the nexus you can see up to 16 players at once in that instance. You can however potentially see up to 32 players in the universe, let's say on a planet. But you can't make a group that big afaik
They were so vague about the way it works that it became a bit misleading at first glance. I understand now that it was never meant to be more than 4 players in a group, but I think they could have been more upfront about the multiplayer system. In my mind, 32 players could be any combination of friends and strangers, so what's stopping them from letting 32 friends joining an instance?
I'm sure there is a legitimate technical reason for it, but it doesn't really excuse the vagueness.

The latest article in Adobe's Substance blog covers the process of texturing SC's planets from the macro scale right down to the grains of sand on the ground. It's a very informative read for those interested in the technical side of things.
I can see how this would work. I've read two of the books in the expanded lore and they were surprisingly good to read. Lots of room for some really creative settings.
So to give some context to the situation, Descendent Studios was founded by a small group of former Cloud Imperium Games (Star Citizen) staff members from 2012 namely Eric Peterson who goes way back to Origin Systems days with Wing Commander 3. Descendent had acquired the Descent IP to make a new game in the Descent franchise and already have a finished game but their publisher Little Orbit, who has apparently breached the contract, is holding them hostage over rights to assets related to the IP.
Here are some of the comments from Eric from the game's discord (via r/descendentstudios): TL;DR - devs built a game, publisher wants to take the IP and run.
Hopefully the deal with Interplay will help them resolve it.
I really feel for the talented devs trying to make a good game. Everything I've seen from it looks like it will be a great sequel.
This shitheel is making a total clown show out of their company and doesn't deserve the title of CEO and I hope the rest of the company will take action.
