One too many spoilers for a game that hadn’t even been released at the time. I ended up fast forwarding that part, then Ben drops another spoiler out of nowhere during emails. You guys need to realize we don’t get these games early too.

Both of these lists are better than what the staff had for GOTY.

This is one of the few Wii U exclusives that I never picked up, so I'm glad it's getting ported to the Switch. I'll be buying two copies. One for myself, and one for my nieces and nephew.

With the exception of any PC games, everything on an Alex GOTY list is an instant buy for me. Luckily his tastes align with mine so often, that the only one missing this year was Assassin’s Creed Origins.

It’s not on the proper list, but I’m even considering picking up Tekken 7, and I’m not really into fighting games. Maybe if it goes on sale.

@bladeofcreation: Besides not bringing it up until Vinny’s argument against two games Dan liked, Dan’s question was valid if one of the arguments made in favor of Dream Daddy was that it did new things for the genre, especially since he was highlighting something else they said: that neither of them have experience in the genre to be making that claim. You reducing his question to a simple “but what does it do that’s new,” or that he was “saying that it needed to do something new,” is not accurate of what his argument was, and ignores an important part.

I think Vinny was sincere about how he felt about Dream Daddy. But I don’t think Damian or Dream Daddy make their respective GOTY lists without Vinny. Abby’s arguments for both were not hitting home for anyone when compared to other games. Some of you might think she made sound arguments, but watching all the videos, it didn’t look like she swayed anyone, with the exception of Ben wanting to check it out more. It was only when Vinny elaborated on how it impacted him, that Jeff was on board, even though he disliked the game. After Jeff gave the nod, everyone else but Dan was swayed.

Something similar happened to that when Vinny saw how much Nier affected Alex, and was willing to compromise to have it at #2. Abby couldn’t let that go for various bad arguments, followed by some “I appreciate” statements that don’t seem sincere to me. It’s at this point she finally goes for the pervy card to knock it down , and Vinny joins in.

I don’t think Dan was dismissive about Dream Daddy as some are saying. One of Abby’s bad arguments in favor of Dream Daddy was that it did new things for visual novels and dating sims. As others with more experience in the genre have said in this thread, she was wrong. Dan didn’t get into questioning what new things were done, considering both Vinny and Abby have no experience in the genre, until Vinny argued that Lost Legacy was just a better version of Uncharted and Yakuza 0 was just a better Yakuza. I thought that was a weak and more dismissive argument than Dan’s, who simply turned Vinny’s own argument against him. Meanwhile, Dan wasn’t the one being dismissive about a game being anime or JRPG.

@cthomer5000: Not to put this all at Abby’s feet, but I think if she hadn’t been so focused on “Nier can’t be #2!” Or “I think Cuphead should be higher!” They probably could have gotten this list to be Mario, Nier, then PUBG. I don’t think they could have gotten PUBG lower than third. That would have more closely resembled their personal picks.

@milkman: Sounds like one of Ben’s compromising suggestions was the closest to how the staff ranked things personally.

@sethmode: Dan played a little of Dream Daddy and didn’t like it, as did Jeff. I think his argument of it doing nothing new for visual novels/dating sims was valid once some of them made arguments that Lost Legacy is just a better Uncharted, and Yakuza 0 is just a better Yakuza game. In that context, some of the arguments made for Dream Daddy doing something different and new, it is a question of what exactly is new if its proponents don’t play those types of games. I felt Yakuza 0 should have made the list, but I’m glad Dream Daddy got automatically stuck at 10, so they could stop making the same arguments for/against it.
