Sersie's Favorite Games of All Time!

I figure it is time to get a list going of the games that I have loved over the years.  These will be platform agnostic, and in fact will cover multiple eras of gaming.  I will update as necessary. :)

List items

  • Mass Effect hooked me in the same kind of way Star Wars did when I was a kid. It had that blend of fun characters and action/adventure on a large scale that I find very compelling. It is for this reason I was able to play through it almost six full times, both to get achievements and also just to see the story again.

  • This game is perfection in the form of a turn based strategy game. The premise was awesome, and I loved the way you could customize your crew's names and weapons. I played through both X-Com and its sequel, but this one is one of the best games of all time.

  • I am sure you can find many treatises on what Baldur's Gate meant to the computer role-playing genre and it most certainly was one of the games that resurrected the RPG genre. This was a game that I invested a lot of time in...well over a hundred hours over the course of a few years. By the end of the game I had consumed every bit of dialogue and story, and done every quest. The final boss fight was epic without being annoying. And what can I say about Minsc and Boo, simply awesome characters. Overall Bioware took something magical and boxed it up for us.

  • Another Bioware game in my top 10 and another awesome game. The Star Wars-iness is awesome here and this game single-handedly restored my faith that a good Star Wars story could be told. This game has one of my favorite story moments of all time in it as well, but I won't spoil it, just in case someone hasn't played it yet. Oh ya, and lightsabers. :)

  • First person shooters with prettier graphics and more tech have come out since Halo, but no shooter exists on any console that best exemplifies how a shooter should "feel". The controls are tight, and this is the closest any console game has gotten to rivaling a mouse-and-keyboard level of control on a console. Add to that a compelling "Aliens"-esque style, a universe encompassing story arc, and a great duo of characters with Master Chief and Cortana. and you have a winner in my book.

  • This probably will be a controversial choice to today's Wow-kiddies, but anyone that was old enough to be playing MMO's at the end of the last Millennium was playing EQ. It was pretty much the only game in town, not counting games like UO which was past its prime. Luckily the gang that made Everquest made a great game, which became one of the templates for all MMO's to follow (including WOW). For me the key awesomeness of this game was the moment when you and a group of 5 of your close friends are deep in a dungeon fighting wave after wave of nasties in a ballet of deadly precision. The challenge of going in and doing something your group has no business attempting, and yet coming out victorious. Add to this a well fleshed out world that I still love today, and this is a winner. I have put EQ long behind me, but I still remember my days in this game fondly.

  • Another sprawling MMO-type game for me, but this one had the awesome setting of a post-apocalyptic world going for it. I love fantasy to be sure, but it was refreshing to be in a different genre. There are genuinely scary moments in this game that just oozes atmosphere. Just me and my dog wandering the Capital Wasteland. Awesome.

  • This is another recent game finding its way onto my list, but it definitely deserves it. No surprise this is another Bioware game, for which I seem to be hopelessly addicted. While the story is very derivative of many fantasy and adventure stories before it, it is still well told. Add to that a great set of characters that are truly fun to interact with and you have a great game. The origins concept is fun, having each character type go through a unique story all to themselves until you merge with the main story line a few hours into the game. I have no doubt this game is superior on the PC, but my playthroughs on the Xbox 360 have been very enjoyable, albeit with a few UI oddities.

  • Long before the dominance of Madden, there were many awesome football game series. On the Amiga the one to get was Cinemaware's TV Sports Football. The whole TV Sports series was pretty good, but the game I remember playing the most was the football game. With the ability to modify the entire roster by name and stats, you could create pretty much any team you wanted.

  • No matter how you liked to pronounce it, 'kah-rah-teh-ka' or 'kara-teeka', this was still a favorite game on my C-64. I hated that darn bird though.

  • This is one of the games I most played on my C64. I loved the progression of mini-games, with my favorite being the anti-aircraft part.

  • This was a favorite game for me and my friends on my Atari 2600. Lot's of sprinting, running, and jumping. A classic.
