Things I didn't like:

  • Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. He doesn't fit the role at all in my opinion and that just SUCKS. I guess they wanted to go with someone who looks a bit like Hayden Christensen, but come on, even that dude looked more menacing than Driver.
  • It treads way too much on familiar ground. There's a Death Star equivalent, there's a shield-base to blow up, there are X-Wing trying to blow up some small part of a giant ship (also there are only so very few X-Wing and not a single other ship, why is that exactly?), etc.

I echo these sentiments. I wouldn't say Adam Driver is a casting problem, but our new villain shouldn't be a whimpering brat. Seriously, he went from using the force to stop blaster fire, sense defection in Finn, and force-choke slam a dude to sniveling as the victim of a father who wasn't there. I'm sure Kylo Ren's story will get better, but this was a poor introduction to the character in my opinion. I really had a problem with Starkiller Base being a McGuffin of sorts. Here's this super awesome planet base that drains stars to recharge it's solar-system obliterating weapon (ignoring gravity, but whatever), but we are going to blow it up because that's what Star Wars does.

Yeah I was pretty into Ren literally up until the he took his helmet off. As soon as he did is was just an, "Oh, THAT'S who's supposed to be threatening? Nahhhh." It sucked a lot out of the latter half of the movie for me, and it also made Han's death feel cheaper/dumber because of being killed by such a... wimp.

Overall I liked it but MAN, is it so hard to understand that Vader NOT taking his helmet off and looking/sounding super imposing is what made him cool/intimidating?

Quite a few people in the cinema started laughing when he took of his helmet, so yeah, I don't think that's what they were going for. I guess they just wanted to humanize him by showing his face (plus you can't do another Vader-like reveal at the very end of the third movie anyway, so I guess they just went "fuck it") and all his "problems."

The character certainly has potential but so far I don't much care for him. Also Han's death was weak anyway. (Which is the biggest shame of all.)

@baka_shinji17: You are welcome of course. I'd still say it's worth seeing yourself though, if you hold any interest in Star Wars.

It's leagues better than the prequels at least (I know that's still not saying a lot).

I heard it's the best game of all time, right?

Sadly haven't found the time to actually play it myself yet, so right now I don't hold any opinion on it.

@dragon_puncher: Yeah, it was better than I'd hoped it would be at the very least.

It's ridiculous isn't it? Rey has no connection to anyone, except for "Luke's lightsaber having chosen her" (another what?), while Leia is his damn sister. Even if Leia thought she couldn't convince Luke to come back (why search for him in the first place than?), because she couldn't before, things have changed now, since Han was just fucking killed, damn it!

Yeah, they probably just felt they had to show Luke at least for a short bit. It's a weird scene though, so I agree with you that it should have just ended with the Millenium Falcon lifting off (would have even been another throwback, since Empire ended like that pretty much.)

I'll mirror parts of my blog (way more in-depth) here:

Things I liked:

  • Rey is a cool character and Daisy Ridley fits the role perfectly.
  • The same goes for Finn and John Boyega.
  • BB-8 is fun and over the top, but somehow manages to not be obnoxious. He's a pleasant surprise. (He's not R2-D2, though.)
  • Some of the scenes are visually just amazing and the sets look great. The new costumes (e.g. the Stormtrooper uniforms)/the new look for the ships are also well done.
  • I thought the lightsaber duels were also done pretty well, especially considering that most of the people involved in them never held a lightsaber before.
  • There's lots of fan service (e.g. Finn looking confused and throwing away the mini-training-bot that Obi-Wan used to teach Luke.), but it's not too on the nose and so I actually like it.
  • Kylo Ren seems like an interesting character too and his fits of rage/immaturity are a character trait that could go far.
  • The overall story is enjoyable and the story set-up for the other two movies is solid and could turn out really good, if they finally aren't afraid of diverging from the old movies any more.

Things I didn't like:

  • Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. He doesn't fit the role at all in my opinion and that just SUCKS. I guess they wanted to go with someone who looks a bit like Hayden Christensen, but come on, even that dude looked more menacing than Driver.
  • Snoke also looks dumb.
  • It treads way too much on familiar ground. There's a Death Star equivalent, there's a shield-base to blow up, there are X-Wing trying to blow up some small part of a giant ship (also there are only so very few X-Wing and not a single other ship, why is that exactly?), etc.
  • There are oh so many convenient coincidences. (Rey and Finn finding the Millenium Falcon, people running into each other again and again in huge facilities, Chewie just taking of right next to Rey who would otherwise have been fucked etc.)

Wait, really? This is out now? I don't know why, but this completely snuck up on me.

I'll have to download it right now, thanks. Hopefully I'll not be as disappointed as you are right now.

KOTOR 1, Jedi Knight and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter are definitely the best three Star Wars games out there, but there are a quite a few more that are still pretty good. (KOTOR 2, Dark Forces, Jedi Knight 2, Battlefront 1 even the two MMOs were okay.)

It's kinda weird but I'm really nervous about going to the midnight premiere tomorrow. I haven't felt as strongly about a movie in probably 20+ years, definitely didn't for the prequel trilogy.

It's nice to know that the initial reception is positive, though.
