GOTY 2013

List items

  • I value a good story more than most things in entertainment. I put Gone Home at the top of my list for that very reason. They way this game fuses story-telling and the environment is incredibly clever. By the end this thing even had me tearing up.

  • Dual Destinies marks a fantastic return for the Ace Attorney games. Phoenix Wright returns as a lawyer and it felt like he did age. He is more mature than he was in the past games which is great since it reflects his new status in the Ace Attorney world. Phoenix's staff members, Athena and Apollo, are also distinct and compelling characters in their own rights. It's just great fun and great story telling.

  • This game is just fun. I really enjoyed playing it. I also enjoyed exploring the ever changing world of Columbia. The attention to detail from how it works and what these people believe and what entertains them was astonishing. The musical segments alone. I was also probably one of the few people that really dug the ending.

  • Like Infinite, The Last of Us has an incredible world that's fun to explore. I'm a stealth fan so I found the combat segments really enjoyable. The relationship between Ellie and Joel was what really held this game together. It was touching and where they went with it was definitely surprising and one reason why it's on this list.

  • Having been a fan of the old DMC series I was a bit worried by this installment. It was a reboot and handled by an outside developer. The end result however was a very good character action game that wasn't really Devil May Cry but a new thing. Shame it had to be called Devil May Cry.

  • A departure for the Metal Gear franchise and a crazy one at that. Platinum takes a crack at with a Kojima creation and the end result is insane. That last boss.

  • One of the games I've played the most of in 2013. This game brings back the story mode that last year's was missing. With crazy boss fights and a flashy battle system this game deserves to be on my list.

  • I'm not a huge fan of the Dynasty Warrior's games and I was moderately interested in One Piece. After playing this game I've watched over 300 episodes and plan on watching more. What does that tell you?

  • The Sly Cooper games weren't my favorite of the Sony trifecta but they were still enjoyable as hell. This out of no where sequel does it's best to update on the gameplay as well as keep it true to the source games and it does a great job.

  • This game is just silly. It's silly but challenging. That's all I wanted from this game and that's what I got in spades. The presentation in this game is fantastic and even though there are not a lot of characters in it it has enough character to push this game into my list.
