@ShaggE: I like the part where you say game design courses are a scam. Then your evidence is that game design schools are a scam and not nearly as good as game design courses at a reputable school.

...so, basically, go to a good college if you want your degree to mean something? What a fucking shocking statement. You're goddamned Sherlock Holmes!

I like the part where you misread my entire point, then get a little crazy with the sarcasm juice. The SCHOOLS are a scam. SCHOOLS. I said the game design courses are worthless at these schools. Again, so I'm extra clear: at these schools.

@SeriouslyNow:

Again, irrelevant, but I write as a journalist and critic. Because your next question will be along the lines of "prove it", know that I'm still new to the field and building my portfolio, and that I'm not claiming to be Jeff Gerstmann 2: Gerst Harder.

Now... how, exactly, do I sound as you say? Are you still on about the teapots? What point did I make that shows a lack of knowledge? I ask this sincerely, because I'm not just arguing to argue. By all means, show me that these advertised game design courses are a boon to aspiring programmers, and I'll be fast to admit that I am mistaken.

You write as a journalist? No you don't. You play some games and review them. A journalist actually interviews the creators of chosen subject matter, a journalist tries to get a proper understanding of the inner workings of the creative process and the industry which surround said creative process. You fucking play some games and write about them on some blog. I know it, you know it. So, please, instead of shitting on Schools you can't afford to go to or don't want to push yourself towards just go back to playing some games and writing about them. There's nothing wrong with playing some games and writing about them but that's not journalism and it certainly doesn't give you carte blanche to talk about Game Design, Tertiary Qualifications or the state of the games industry.

That's odd, I seem to remember typing "journalist AND critic". Are you even reading my posts? Are you just taking a word or two from each one? I've read your posts in the past, and you don't seem like an unintelligent guy, so why are simple concepts like "and" being lost on you? Moreover, when did I talk about the state of the games industry? Instead of addressing my arguments, now you're inventing arguments, attributing them to me, then shooting them down? Really? So I can say "you have no proof that hamburgers are made of paper", and we'll still be on equal argumentative grounds.

And yet again, you miss the point anyway. I'm shitting on these schools because they are fucking people over. Also, why would I go to these schools that are offering classes for designers and programmers? That makes no damn sense.

I see no qualitative analysis of the schools which are supposedly 'fucking people over'. All I see is statements. Is that how you talk about the games you play?

What do you want me to do, ask for a free press enrollment? Apples and oranges. Use Google. It's there for a reason. Look up the lawsuits against these colleges. This isn't a "once or twice" thing, or only one college, it happens again and again.

There is no such thing as an education in game design.

Can somebody put this right smack dab into the top of GB's homepage? Those courses are like liberal arts degrees for people who don't want to admit to themselves that they're throwing money away. (although it's much more possible to get some use out of liberal arts than it is from learning to "tighten up the graphics on level three")

Bullshit. BULL-FUCKING-SHIT. If you are taught to use the tools, jargon and principles of game design in as much a way as is possible to be relevant then you have a greater chance of hitting the ground running and when it comes to companies like EA and Activision (and their owned franchises and studios) that shit matters. Now, very few people will become actual game designers because that takes lots of luck and many years of climbing the corporate ladder (if we're talking internal recruitment) but quite a few people will get employment opportunities if they do a game design degree as long as they have the talent. If they have the talent but no formal qualification and no training then that talent is just potential and will lead them almost nowhere.

God, I'm so sick of people shitting on Game Design courses for no good reason. Are you an educator? Do you write curriculum? Do you actually have Industry Experience? Do you give a shit about anyone else?

Guess what many potential employers do when they see "DeVry" or "Collins" or "Westwood" on a resume? They immediately laugh their heads off and move on. Will the courses increase your knowledge? Sure, probably. You'll be the best teapot modeler in all the land. And when Maxis needs a fresh new set of devs for SimTeapot, you'll be rolling in dough.

Orrrr.... you could take classes at a more reputable college that isn't constantly fighting lawsuits and giving high grades to he with the fattest wallet, learn much more, and as a cherry on top, maybe be taken seriously.

You're speaking from experience I see because teapot modelling is something 3D Design lecturers haven't done in a decade or more. The teapot isn't even included in basic GL programming examples anymore either. Nice that you avoided my direct questions too.

Teapot being a joking shorthand for "base-level", but I guess that wasn't obvious enough. And your questions were extremely irrelevant (except maybe the one about industry experience, so here you go: yes and no. I write, but I don't program or design), so I chose to ignore them. I don't need to be a teacher or philanthropist to know a scam when I see one.

Nice that you avoided every point I made other than "teapot" and "ignoring irrelevance", too.

I get it. All black people look the same, you fucking racist.

yes thats exactly what he was saying, you genius liberal

At least when Bruce didn't get the joke, he posted something interesting.

rererereeree, you sound like a whiny 5 year old.

You forgot to call him a poopyhead neenerface. If you're going to play the "angry toddler" role, you might as well go all out.

Also valid: "Nuh UH", "Your FACE didn't get the joke", "Well... ummm... your ASS looks funny. Yeah, I said ASS. On the internet. What now?", and the classic retort from people who've been publicly shamed, "stfu nub lolol".

i agree he did sound like an angry toddler. but i dont think he was playing, i think thats how he really is.

A variation on "I know you are, but what am I?" (in this case "I know he is, but what am I?") isn't exactly helping your cause.

ok now youre just being immature.

Somebody needs to jump back to the 90s, call Alanis Morisette, and say "you know that definition for 'irony' you were looking for? Well, listen to THIS!" and dramatically thrust the phone towards you saying I'm immature.
