Thoughts on the MW3 Reveal

Right off the bat, I should warn you that there's probably going to be nothing unique about my opinion of the trailer. I've never really been a huge fan of CoD. It's not the worst franchise in the world, but it's certainly not the best.  The only real grudge I have against anything CoD is Bobby Kotick. Dude's a prick. Anyway...

I really don't see what was so great about the trailer. Activision did the same thing for the MW3 reveal trailer that they did for Blops & MW2 (links provided at the end). Here's a run down of all 3 trailers:

-Explosions
-Fast Cuts
-Scripted Events
-AI performing various actions
-Some dramatic voice guy talking about some aspect of war
-More explosions

If you like CoD and you want more of the same, then that's fine with me. But if you like CoD and you're expecting something new (whether it's an interesting game mechanic or a drastic change to the engine), I really don't see how you can be excited. There wasn't a huge difference between MW2 and Blops, this reveal trailer should say the same.

I know that's a lot to say off of a reveal trailer and there could be info at E3 that proves me completely wrong, but based on that and previous reveal trailers, I don't feel like I have any reason to get excited about the game. Feel free to try and convince me otherwise.

Programming on Macs

I gotta say, I love my Macbook Pro. It's a really nice laptop, I don't mind using the mouse pad on it (although I do have a mouse if need be) it can play the games I want it to play, and It's really convenient. That is, if I'm not trying to program.

I currently have two programs on my computer I want to program with: Eclipse and Blitzmax (a good my-first-programming tool IMO). I've been coding for a fair amount of time, and I wanted to take a shot at making a "real" game. Nothing big, but something for my own personal education, and if I think it's good enough, maybe putting it out there for the masses. Who knows.

The problem is, whenever I try to compile/build my code, I run into the problem of (from my admittedly novice understanding) that I'm missing a certain item that should be on my computer. How do I get said item? By downloading Xcode.

Now that's not a problem at all. It's inconvenient, sure, but it's no big deal. After a quick google search of "Xcode" I'm taken to Apple's website... and here's where the problems begin. In order to buy Xcode, I need an Apple ID. And not only do I need an Apple ID, but I need to deem myself an Apple Developer (whatever the hell that entails, and after watching South Park last night, I'm a little nervous). Then once I deem myself an Apple Developer, then I have to agree to the iTunes registration bullshit. Then I look at Xcode, (thankfully it's only $5... as far as I can tell) and not only is the process to get it way more work than it needs to be, but then it gets terrible reviews and apparently you have to re-download it every time you want to update it. Time Warner Cable is shitty enough as it is, the absolute last thing I need to burden my internet with is a fucking 4-gig download every time I want to be able to code.

Now, I'm no expert on this sort of thing, and I'm sure there's ways around it (which I would be very grateful for), but it's a lot more trouble than it's worth. Sure it's cheap, but for something so cheap it shouldn't be so damn annoying to obtain.

Anyways, I had to let that out. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

WTF is SE doing?

 *sigh*

I honestly don't even know where to begin. I'm not mad at Square... I'm disappointed.  I'm disappointed that they're taking the "let's make 20 different games at once" route as opposed to one where they focus on 1-2 games at a time. On top of that, how much sense does it make to announce a game in 2008 (Versus? I think?), only to have a game's sequel (the original barely being in 2009) come out before it?

Look, I know there's a lot that goes into these video games, namely because I've actually worked in the industry (albeit not with a major game company). I realize that you have to establish an engine in order for a game to even function, which attributes to FFXIII-2's proximity and Versus' distance. So as upset as I am about Versus being put behind XIII-2, there's at least reason, given the way SE does things and what I want obviously isn't their priority. Having said that, I don't understand the logic in putting out FFXIII-2 before Versus. It's frustrating.

Did I just refute part of what I'm bitching about? Yes, but with good reason- why the flying fuck is Square Enix making a ton of different titles at once? Did they not fire 300-200 of their staff members in 2009? If your staff is already limited, then why was SE busy making (off the top of my head) DQIX, Versus, XIII, XIV, 4 Warriors of Light, FFTactics for the iPhone, Agito(Type-0?), KH3D, KH Birth by Sleep, KH Re:Coded, XIII-2 (maybe), and... I can't think of anything else. I'm probably wrong on a few of those, but even then, we're looking at 7-8 games by a game company that cut 200-300 staff members?

It's absolutely ridiculous and stupid. It's like they're a kid at a candy shop and they want all of the candy, but they can barely afford it. So rather than buy one piece and enjoy the hell out of it, they buy as much as they can. They get home, and they eat all of it really fast as opposed to enjoying it piece by piece. So not only are they out of money, but with all the candy they consumed, they're getting sick. Shitty analogy but I think it gets the point across- trying to do too much is only going to drive you into the ground.

And like I said, I haven't worked in a large game maker yet, but if they doing this, they're only going to run the company into the ground. I'm a witness to that.

My weekend (thus far)

Despite the fact that I'm moving into a semi-expensive apartment soon & should be saving my money in order to pay for the two TVs we are purchasing (one for our common room and one for my personal use), I decided to go to some local used game stores that sell old-school video games. I don't know why, but I still feel like I get more enjoyment out of older games than I do most modern games (with a few exceptions). While I was in the store, I had a hard time debating whether I should get Halo 1, Devil May Cry 3, Final Fanatasy 9, Metal Gear Solid 1 &3, Pikmin, and Mega Man 64. I wound up buying FF9 and MGS1 for a total of $20. I thought it was a good deal, although I forgot you can buy those for your PS3 for around the same price... I think. Not sure on that. So was that a good purchase? I really wanted mega man 64 (only $8!), but I really need to stop buying games... especially because I'm buying Reach in a few days. D'oh.

Anyways, I also have 1200 Microsoft points left over after I spent $20 on XBL to buy Dead Rising 2: Case 0. I'm not sure what to spend them on though. Should I buy Limbo, Halo 1, Monday Night Combat, or save my points for the inevitable Halo: Reach DLC? I'm stuck on that.

Last thing: what did you guys think about DR2:C0? I like it, but I'm not sure its worth the $5. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it, but it's really a demo with a shallow pre-emptive story, achievements, and the ability to take what you've done in the game into the full game later. I love a free S-rank as much as the next guy, but I'd much rather have a demo with the abilitiy to take what you've done into the full game. Still, I think this will make me purchase DR2. Anyone else?

WoWTF

So recently I've been playing World of Warcraft. For me, WoW is a kind of like that one girl you've always liked as a friend and every once in awhile it becomes friends with benefits, but it will never progress beyond that. And this has been going on for 3 years. And you never really even get that far in all of your hook-ups. I suppose you could throw me in the casual category because of that, but I'm getting away from the point.

In my recent quest to finally hit a level cap (i.e. get somewhere), I've been questing like mad and I'm finally 1 level away from hitting 80 & perhaps making my WoW experience into a game that I constantly play (not gonna lie, even once I hit 80 I don't think it's going to happen, especially with Halo: Reach right around the corner). I found the new dungeon system very useful and I only wish it had been implemented sooner... but there's one problem.

A little earlier than this post, I had been running the Culling of Stratholme with a random group. Everything went really well, and we finished with some nice drops (of course, nothing for a Rogue. NOTHING DROPS FOR ROGUES, DAMMIT). So I'm waiting for Chromie to come so I can turn in the quest about escorting Arthas through til the end of the instance, and just as I'm about to turn in the quest to click the "Complete Quest" button, I'm kicked from the party. Once the instance is completed, that should not be able to happen.  Of course, it's not hard to redo the instance and I'm fully aware of that. But it's really inconvenient when you finish something, only to be completely robbed and have to start all over again from the beginning. Or, going back to my original comparison, it's like your finally going to get laid, but right as you're about to start (or finish), someone's parents walk down the stairs. Sure, you can start it again, but you're going to be extremely paranoid that the same thing is going to happen again, so you're especially careful.

I know it's not a great story, but I'm waiting for Entourage to load. I need to keep myself busy, dammit.

Random Update

So for once in my life I figured I'd actually try to get involved in a website community that isn't filled with kids (see:Gamefaqs), and what better place to try than Giant Bomb. Hopefully I'll be welcomed with open arms & make tons of friends... if only the internet worked that way.

Anywho, I'm an intern at Max Gaming Technologies & I contribute (less often than I should) to www.playeraffinity.com . So read that website and buy some of our apps! Maybe if you guys help both/either group(s) out, I'll actually have a job once I get out of college! So support some random guy, I'll try and update/get involved, and we can take it from there. Cheers.
