Shaunage: Best of 2009

List items

  • Undeniable. This is on a totally different level to pretty much every other game I have ever played.

  • At LEAST as good as RE4. I played this through a full four times in the space of about two weeks, finishing up the original 1000 points. Super excited for the upcoming mansion DLC.

  • Significantly better than the already great original. I didn't take the ending to heart quite as much as the GB staff, but it does imply some pretty awesome things about where the game could go.

  • Played over 30 hours of it in a week. This one basically came out of nowhere and blew me away. Slightly disappointed by the DLC thus far.

  • The story is better than it gets credit for and it gets credit for being the first game in a long time to genuinely shock me. (Remember, no Russian.) Spec Ops was an unexpected gem as well. Three absolutely mindblowing Co-op experiences on this list already, but getting all of these done on Veteran is probably my most satisfying achivement all year.

  • I got a lot of stick for not including this in my preliminary list. Because of that I played this seemingly unapproachable game and found it actually pretty welcoming. Comparing this to Baldur's Gate etc is giving the wrong impression to console gamers. This is directly in the vein of KOTOR and Mass Effect and is of very similar quality to both. Already planning a second run as I basically ignored all side missions mostly so I'd finish it in time, but also to keep Morrigan happy...

  • A nice surprise. I'm a big fan of Castlevania style exploration games and I had no idea this was one heading in. I'm starting to worry this will win Giant Bomb's GOTY over Uncharted 2. That would be criminally insane, but it's still a fantastic game.

  • What a year for the PS3. Three games on this list are PS3 exclusives and six of the others are available on PS3. Granted I am still buying 360 versions of multiplats exclusively, but if you think the 360 had a better year you are provably incorrect. My main point of contention here is the people comparing this game to Prototype, especially in terms of quality. Prototype is an absolute mess.

  • Not quiiite up to the high standards set by Tools of Destruction but still very good.

  • The only 360 exclusive on the list. There is a LOT of this game. I'm 20 hours in and my completion is something like 16%. I probably won't beat it fully. It's excellent but I'm already sick of repeating tracks. Same problem with Dirt 2. If I ever have to race Ensenada again I am going to murder someone.
