I'm glad PUBG won, just like Hitman, the game that spawns the most content/discussion on the site should get it.

But man, it's fucking insane that Horizon didn't make the top ten.

Its combat and dinobot A.I. was so well done, the visuals were some of the best I've ever seen, and the premise was pretty decent too despite most of the missions being a bore. I get not digging the world traversal so much in retrospect after playing Zelda, but that game did so many things right there should be a post award award for the best game that somehow got shut out.

Shit's nuts.

For real.

WWE games are garbage and absolutely belong on “please stop.”

The overall packages are certainly lacking, but they've got a solid foundation, they just need the WWE to allow them more time to work shit out because the yearly release cycle isn't doing anyone favors, especially when they force the impossible on them which was the Switch port of 2K18.

I love Alex and (to a lesser extent) Dan, but the "Please Stop" mention, was horseshit.

They clearly want a different style of game, but instead of simply admitting that, and moving on, they go on the same tired ass agenda fueled tirade tossing out false statements left and right as they've done each time they've discussed 2K's series this year, and to top it off, they insult the people that actually enjoy them....or some elements of them. I get Alex being extra salty because he has a horse to back with Fire Pro....which is a great game, I played Returns for nearly a decade, but Jesus Christ...shit isn't nearly as black and white as they paint it.

Yes, the overall package 2K offers isn't very good, but the two things they get right is their always amazing creation suite and the core (in-ring) gameplay. I'm not talking about gimmick matches, or weapon physics, I'm talking the basic foundation of the engine, which is not only totally sound but the best anyone's gonna be able to come up with anytime soon which is pretty amazing from a simulation standpoint. Despite the guy's insistence that the gameplay "fucking sucks", which I would take with a huge grain of salt given Jeff hasn't seemed to enjoy a 3D wrestling game this side of All Stars, Alex is all about the Fire Pro, and Dan....well...Dan is one of the most impatient gamers I've ever seen, it's understandable not all of them (or any of them) would be engaged with the current gameplay which requires a great deal of give and take for it to be rewarding. It's not the button masher Dan wants it to be and has treated it as being. The matches now have a great back and forth flow to them letting you recreate the televised product pretty accurately....though the slower paced old school match ups fair better as Yukes haven't been able to come up with a decent way of pacing the modern indy influenced action with their frequent bursts of speed (giving us several comeback states would help in those regards).

Wishing 2K would just "stop" is ignorant as hell, not just because of the fact they have a dedicated fanbase of us "idiots" that still enjoy the games despite their many issues, but the idea that anyone else could just come along and nail a wrestling game on their first try or would even want to despite the industry being hotter now than it has been in over a decade. 2K has a solid foundation to build on, it's just they don't have the time to work out all of the bugs that have been piling up after two decades of recycled code when they're still trying to come up with an acceptable replacement for their ditched story mode, and to keep a large portion of its (never satisfied) fans happy by making sure each release is up to date with all the bells and whistles. It's an uphill battle each and every year, and 2K's been caught in a rebuilding process over the last four installments. Also, no matter how much shit they get for not delivering, whoever else that would take a stab would be slammed just as much regardless if it was a sim or arcade experience as the main audience that supports these things are so set in their ways. That's why All Stars, despite being the most fun wrestling game since No Mercy (or Def Jam in some respects) didn't catch on because of it's over the top nature and it lacking an extensive character editor.

Things aren't gonna change until the WWE finally allows 2K and Yukes to take an extra six months to a year to iron things out or approves an installment that is meant to last several by the way of regular updates and dlc. I wish there was a b-team developer in the mix. Years back I hoped THQ San Diego had been brought on in that capacity either to put out All Star sequels on the off years, or have them take another stab at a simulation as their first attempt, TNA Impact, was released unfinished when Midway went under. The class based gameplay they came up with was such a breath of fresh air and was something I had hoped THQ would've implemented into the Smackdown legacy games despite trying something similar a few years earlier.

But yeah, the guys really need to get off their restrictive view of what wrestling games should be, realize they want something arcadey in nature, and go find that something, and if they have...focus on that. They went so far with their hatin', their months long critique of the series eventually fell apart for anyone that's actually played them as they start tossing out things that just aren't true with no grey area at all in the quality of the product outside the creation aspects, and that along with them now directing insults to those of us that do enjoy the games for legitimate god damned reasons is frustrating as hell given if I wasn't a fan of theirs, I wouldn't care what they think...but everything is just good...or bad to them, there's no middle ground and if it doesn't fit what they think it should be, it "fucking sucks." Personally I'd say having a stubbornly narrowminded opinions would "fucking suck"...but that's just me.

WHO'S EXCITED FOR WRASSLE KINGDOM???

I really don't get Uncharted being brought up in Best Surprise, like at all. Lost Legacy being good is one of the least surprising things I can ever recall in my time playing video games.

I've seen a bunch of people say they dislike the series and were only in it for the story. I haven't really enjoyed one all the way through since the second, and I'm playing the fourth for the first time now and find it to be a better movie than game, if they had apprehension that Lost Legacy would be more of the same, I totally get that. If they were worried Chloe and Nadine couldn't carry a game of their own, then they aren't aware of Claudia Black and just how awesome she is.

It seems like Johnson didn't like The Force Awakens or tried to too hard to do his own thing and it doesn't feel like a real trilogy anymore. Not like the original Star Wars trilogy or Nolan's Batman. Lucas and Nolan sticking around for all of those films kept the tone and story on track. It seems like Johnson doesn't care or actively dislikes the mysteries that Abrams setup

Abrams approved the story Johnson went with and I feel like Johnson actually did layer new questions on top of the mysteries JJ set up, at least as far as Rey goes. While he definitely presented the idea that Rey could fit in with the overall theme that anyone can be a beacon of hope within the force, his on the nose tease involving the reflections and drawing attention to her right hand along with her "parents" being revealed as nobody fits in with the mystery of the Skywalker lightsaber and why she had Luke's visions and not Anakin's allowing Abrams (formerly Treverrow) a choice of two paths to venture down wrapping up her story.

Ultra Street Fighter IV - I don't know why, I suck so bad at fighters. It's super nice to look at though.

NBA Playgrounds - Dig it, despite it not being clear as to how you initiate certain powers. Also, thank god for pre-2000 players being included, I dropped off after the Bulls broke up.

Virginia - I live in Virigina, so it was a required purchase...especially at $1.99

Want to get Abzu (so pretty), might get I Am Bread (looks neat), but talked myself out of the GOTY upgrade for Hitman....just doesn't seem like enough content for the price.

How about Alex and Dan please stop labeling the core gameplay efforts of the 2K WWE games as being "bad" and that they "play like shit/fucking suck" when it's clear they just don't enjoy the simulation approach taken with them and want something more arcadey in nature.

It's their awards and they think those games play like shit. What we really need is a "Please Stop being overly defensive about game series you like just because someone else doesn't like them."

I'm not being overly defensive, that's just how things are.

None of them enjoy the slow methodical back and forth nature of the simulation focused gameplay, that's why they think it plays like shit, it doesn't fit their strict definition of what a wrestling game should be.

This is evident from the things they have said over the years and seeing Dan not having the patience to even attempt to engage the action as it's supposed to be stubbornly standing around spamming kicks in a proverbial head shaking act of defiance failing to realize the current system is most rewarding to those that actually play smart and don't treat them like some stupid button masher while Alex gives flat-out incorrect instructions of how a new method of play controls claiming it's "bad" when it's actually the most rewarding and layered wrestling system there's ever been and one of the few things Yukes/2K continues to get right with the series.

When Dan points out a completely optional grappling system added this year which allows more freedom in the ring is a step back over the last installment he enjoyed which suffered gameplay wise thanks to the arcade nature of its sped up strikes, it's clear he's not a fan of the genre. He wants an arcade wrestling game, and that's fine....but not acknowledging that and acting as if it's the game's fault for not being what he wants all while taking the tired black or white stance he does way too often is incredibly annoying and devalues his opinion from a critical standpoint.

As I said, you're not gonna bitch about Madden not being Blitz.

For Alex though, there's obviously a little more going on as he's using the opportunity to champion the little guy in Fire Pro World.....which should be, but not in this manner. It's gotta be exactly how they want it or it's dogcrap. There's no grey area at all, and that shit's lame.

They wouldn't shit on Madden because it's not Blitz, there's no excuse to do it in this situation.

I'll be the first to admit WWE games haven't had a decent overall package since 2K16, but the reason the series has remained popular is because of its amazing creation suite and the most realistic core wrestling gameplay ever seen which offers really awesome back and forth matches with all of the reversal and transitional animations added to the mix over the last few installments. Something neither Alex or Dan (or Jeff for that matter) are looking for....which is fine, but it doesn't mean it's "bad", or 2K/Yukes should "stop making them."

They definitely need a year off to iron out the kinks and rethink some of not so appealing elements of the series, but like they said....the WWE just won't allow it.

Comparing it to Fire Pro, is down right silly though. I fucking LOVE that series, but it's a completely different animal and with its own strengths and weaknesses.

If I had been on the staff, on top of me being that one guy defending Battlefront, I probably would've got fired backing up Alex on Fire Pro which was a really aggravating moment. I get where Jeff is coming from wanting to have rules in place to make sure the proceedings stay somewhat legitimate, but this ain't the Oscars, and even the Oscars are a joke. Of all the things this site offers, the year end awards ranks really low for me and I can just imagine how annoying it must be for the Beastcasters having to fly out there for two weeks and partake in these podcasts. It's fun having them all there for the extracurricular stuff (I really hope they did another Rock Band special) but they could just as easily do the debates remotely....and to be honest, I'd prefer coast specific ones leading to a grand finale featuring both...but that's just me as Bakalar not being involved is such a bummer. Still though, Alex was right. Alex.....was......riiiiiiiiight...
