Lawful Evil

"With our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict, and bring order to the galaxy!"

-Darth Vader

The first of the three evil alignments, Lawful Evil characters are villains who prefer to operate within the system, and from their position of power and authority in said system do evil. Lawful Evil characters can either be self-righteous anti-villains who genuinely desire to bring a kind of peace, but via fascism and brutality, or alternatively just sadistic control freaks who enjoy having power over others. If a villain makes it clear that they desire some kind of order, then they are most certainly this alignment. Villains who again, do evil from a position of power and authority are also almost invariably this. While there are some villains in positions of authority who are not Lawful Evil, they are the exception, not the rule, and for the most part being evil and in a position of authority denotes Lawful Evil. Finally, though this by no means a universal truth, Lawful Evil is the most likely of the three evil alignments to have villains who actually honor their word. While I do not believe that having a code of honor automatically makes you Lawful (plenty of the characters described below have no such codes of scruples), Lawful Evil characters are nevertheless still the Evil characters most likely to have some kind of honor and again, keep their word.

List items

  • Typically portrayed as being this alignment due to being the Shredder's fanatically loyal right-hand who will do pretty much anything he says but outside of that usually also has some measure of honor that keeps her from being as bad as her master. Still bad though.

  • Sought to restore order to the Earth and keep it from plunging into a nuclear war, but was willing to commit genocide to do it.

  • Craved power and more specifically the title of king, and to get it murdered the rightful ruler and then tried to murder the rightful heir, at which point he replaced the old monarchy with his own tyrannical one. So given his clear hunger for power and desire to rule, and his also being a position of leadership over the Hyenas, I feel like he at least starts out Lawful Evil.

  • Sometimes referred to by the fandom as "Catholic Space Nazis" and rightly so, given that the Imperium as a collective are a bunch of xenophobic, overly-militant fascists who commit genocide regularly. Basically think the Empire from Star Wars only never overthrown, just sliding further and further into hell.

  • As an extension of the Imperium, I'd imagine they can and do slip into this every so often.

  • And out of all of the ruthless, brutal, and cruel humans in the Imperium, these guys often come out as looking particularly bad in relation to all the others. But then they ARE based off of the real-life Inquisition, so I suppose it shouldn't come as any kind of surprise. And I quote: "When passing sentence, always err to the side of harshness. Remember: there is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt." So basically a bunch of hanging judges and fanatics. Sounds pretty Lawful Evil to me.

  • The humans ain't the only ones in Warhammer 40k who fit this alignment. The Tau are not just an empire, but also an empire that goes from place to place trying to conquer and assimilate different species. And if a species doesn't want to bend knee, the Tau straight-up wipe them out. In essence, they're a lot like...

  • The coalition of trigger-happy religious fanatics from space are in my mind even worse than the Tau Empire, because unlike the Tau, who are strictly speaking well-intentioned in a twisted sort of way, the Covenant are just a bunch of genocidal xenophobes who want to wipe out humanity simply because they view them as heretical vermin.

  • And these guys here form the backbone of the Covenant army, and as such are responsible for the majority of the atrocities committed against humanity by the Covenant. They are also a hierarchal society that of all of the Covenant races respect the Prophet's authority the most, have the most intricate and complex ranking system within their military, and also are also the most orderly. Finally, the Elites maintain efficient (but also brutal) order over the subordinate races like Grunts and Jackals. They also have a twisted sort of honor, but it's not to anyone's benefit but their own. After all, what honor is there in slaughtering non-combatant civilians, shooting one SPARTAN in the head from afar with a Needle Rifle, and running another one through from behind when he was distracted?

  • Leader of the Storm Covenant, which is basically a bunch of Covenant who don't want to make nice with humanity and can't seem to understand or accept that the war is over.

  • While most of the Brutes are very, very Chaotic Evil, Tartarus here is an exception. As both a leader among his people and also enforcer of the Prophet's wishes (whose authority he does respect and is wholeheartedly devoted to) Tartarus comes off as much more Lawful to me. This also makes him a kind of counterpart to Arbiter Ripa Moramee', who is Chaotic Evil as opposed to most other Elites being Lawful Evil.

  • As the tyrannical, war-mongering, and shockingly xenophobic leaders of the ruthless and genocidal Covenant, all of the Prophets fit this alignment to at least some degree, but the Prophet of Truth, himself pretty much responsible for the entirety of the Human Covenant War and all of the many horrors it entailed, stands out as the absolute worst of the worst.

  • Like his peers Truth and Regret, the Prophet of Mercy's title is actually an ironic one. Turns out he's a rather merciless jerk.

  • And of course, we round out the trinity with the one Prophet of the three who actually did some fighting, both in Halo Wars and Halo 2, though in the latter he didn't exactly last long. Still just as bad as his fellows either way.

  • Determined to follow his protocol to the letter, even though that entails wiping out several sentient species in the name of stopping the Flood.

  • Do I honestly need to explain this one?

  • And of course, this extends to his cronies. The archetypal evil empire and the one countless fictional characters (including many of the other people on this list) are based off of.

  • Another one that should be rather obvious. He is the worst mass murderer in human history after all.

  • The real-life historical count, who was a notoriously bloodthirsty and sadistic ruler who, while fairly effective at keeping order also brutally tortured and killed thousands of people.
